  • The Pilot Kakuno is an excellent student pen or first fountain pen experience. I unbox it, talk about the parts and features of the pen, provide some size comparisons and measurements, and then do a writing sample. After the writing sample, I talk about what I like and what I don't like about the pen. Please feel free to use the chapters provided below to skip to various parts of the review.

I once dropped my kakuno and it stuck extra fine nib down and straight up in the hardwood of the floor. I pulled it out (after my initial scream), wiped it off and continued writing with it as if nothing has happened.

Excellent review - I can heartily affirm all the points you made in praise of this pen. My only quibble is not with you or this pen but rather with the “starter pen” jargon. It suggests that a journey is ahead or that this pen by itself will fail to be enough. That simply isn’t necessarily the case. I’ve been a professional engineer and writer for decades, and had this pen been available since day one, I can assure you it would’ve been nearly enough (and actually enough if augmented with a spare italic nib from a Plumix.) The only reason I might gravitate toward the Pilot Prera as my favorite, instead of the Kakuno, is a slight sense of vanity in appreciating pretty things - at which the Prera has an advantage with its shiny chrome accents. I also enjoy the relatively petite size of the Prera for packing into my notebook.

The Pilot Kakuno was my first fountain pen. For that I will forever be grateful. I have it in and I am happy with both. However, I recently bought 2 Platinum Preppy and as the French say "Ou la laa". Buttery smooth and also can easily get converted to a eyedropper... for less money.

Love this review, so thorough, and I wasn't aware that so many of the entry-level Pilot nibs were swap-able! I love my clear Kakuno, I use it for work since I don't have to worry about an expensive pen growing legs and wandering off at the office, and the Japanese XF works well with most office-weight paper, too. Bonus - I added a Kaweco clip intended for a Kaweco sport, which slipped right on, securely, where that divot is on the cap so I could clip it into my planner book. :)

Your honesty is very much appreciated in your disdain of the Metropolitan fountain pen, which just goes to show that preferences and tastes vary even in the fountain pen world. Makes for great discussions. Again, excellent video Doug!👏👏

I like that Pilot pens, sold in Europe, are international standard compatible. I could not believe my eyes when i saw Kakuno being sold for 3,50 euro at one of the "back to school" sales. I picked two, both with dark grey barrel, dark transparent section, one with lime colored cap and the other in orange. It is so well designed that the nib does not dry out even after being not used for several weeks.

You can definitely feel the difference between cheap and good plastic/resin. My dad's namiki falcon has hideous plastic for the price, whereas my 823 feels premium. I got my daughter the kakuno 2 pen (fine and medium nibs), workbook, cartridge set and she loved it (also worth noting - the set was $25). She liked the set enough to beg for a narwhal pen, so it was a great starter set, I'd say

My first fountain pen was gifted to me; it was a Waterman Expert. I ruined the nib as I impatiently pounded the nib down to get the ink flowing. Years later, I decided to give fountain pens another shot, so I got a Metro. It was love at first inking. I haven’t really used another Metro since then because I started acquiring all kinds of pens. But it still has a special place in my heart.

This pen is absolutely fantastic, I really don't get why it's not more popular, yes the colored ones are tacky but the demonstrators have a sober, utilitarian style, these pens are amazing and great for beginners, incredibly durable too, mine fell off the 2nd story window because my dumbass forgot to close it and, while the preppy shattered (rest in piece miss preppy, you were a great pen), the Kakuno didn't have a single scratch on it, I will defend this pen to the last breath.

You would have to epoxy the holes in the end of the barrel, seal the barrel threads with silicone grease and probably add a silicone o-ring to the section for it to work as an eyedropper. As to burping, any eyedropper pen that is half or less full of ink will burp with heat transfer from the hand. It all depends on the capacity of the feed, ie; how much ink the feed will absorb before spilling.

Great review! The Kakuno(and Explorer), Pelikan Twist, and Kaweco Perkeo are so much better than Safari/ALs and the Metro. That they are much less expensive is a huge plus, but in many ways they are just better pens. I guess the Metro and Safaris are testament to the power of marketing. Sure, all of the alternatives are plastic, but they are available in "grown up" colors and are sturdy workhorses.
Thank you for bucking the latest/ limited/ expensive/gotta have it trend in pen reviews. I got back into pens almost twelve years ago after a long hiatus and initially succumbed to a bunch of mistakes I should have avoided as a returning user. I'm left now trying to figure out how to cull my very modest collection so I can justify acquiring my only grail pen, a Sailor Pro Gear Standard. That acquisition is testament to the importance of always trying "grail" pens in person. I never thought I would like Sailors based on reviews, but trying all the nibs at Anderson Pens in Chicago made me an immediate convert!
      But I digress....
Anyway, thanks again for bringing a little sanity to the FP world!

i always looked down on the kakuno because it looks cheap and the smiley face on the nib seems like a lame gimmick, but recently i'm into pens with facets, i just got a visconti homo sapiens medici and a benu euphoria so finding out about the facets on the barrel and the triangular grip is really motivating me to buy one

I still have a clear demo Kakuno that I only use occasionally. For the price, alone, it is quite unbeatable in terms of build, ease of use and dependability. It also fits the fun to use Con-70, which is a sweet bonus.
But, I still find Pilot’s steel nibs on their many ‘starter’ pens like the Kakuno to be quite boring and underwhelming. I don’t particularly enjoy writing with them. I actually prefer Sailor’s inexpensive steel nibbed ‘student’/entry-level pens like the Profit Jr./Compass and the Lecoule.
