I've done exactly this on tours in France. When it's windy I put the tarp on the ground first then put the bike right on one edge and pull the tarp up and over the top. That way you've got one edge held down by the weight of the bike. Makes for a quick shelter if it rains too.
MrLTD1100 Steve great idea that. Wish I’d have thought of that now. That ground was really hard and stone compacted, had a right job pegging it down. Will do next time. Thinking of a trip to France next year any wild camp tips on areas ?? ATB Steve
I have done the same in NZ for years. We have absolutely NOTHING dangerous here except humans but rustling and crackling in the bush at night can set your mind wild. Nice vid mate, thanks.
Just came back to the states from vacation in that region. Stayed at a cottage in Cornhill on Tweed. Went to Northumberland National Park too. Really beautiful country!
Good you recced a route round that barrier, sometimes get locked while your in there !! Might have been military in the undergrowth! There are loads of training areas in the borders.
Total quality and inspiring. Saw this as i was looking for ideas around the bike tarp combo then found myself watching the whole video, totally chilled after a hard day, so thanks Steve. Great idea scouting with google maps too, nice one.
Not bothered about amazing sound quality. The idea is you're slumming it a bit in the woods. It is what it is! Rabbit looked great! Tarp shelter looked pretty cozy too!!! If you get cold can always run the bike for a bit and enjoy the heat from the lump!!! :)
I have recently started doing little wild camping trips on my motorcycle, I live in Scotland so have plenty places to go , going tomorrow to applecross for an overnight trip
Welcome to Scotland my friend, This makes me miss motorcycles, I have a dog now so I can't have a bike any more, Here's wishing you many more wonderful rides, there is nothing like it, along with wild camping two of my favorite things in life, all the best mate. [I subbed]
Like many others..I was a bit concerned when I saw you were going to sleep with the bike leaning towards you..I'm sure you knew what you were doing. Enjoyed very much.
Christina Watson few people commented on this, yes bike on really hard ground. It was the remains of a hard stone path, could hardly get pegs in the ground. Puc and stone under the stand no probs😃👍
Thanks for watching if I’m honest I can’t remember the name, bought it on Amazon used it twice and the Zip went. Kept the midges out on that t trip tho 👍
Enjoyed the video Steve I have camped on my 350 Royal Enfield a few times and enjoyed it but I need a bit more power on modern roads I will be looking for a more powerful bike next spring I fancy a 500 hundred Enfield with panniers on I like Enfield's never go over 70 mph it's fast enough for me at 63years old Atb Geoff .
TWO WHEEL FIX Hi thanks for that, sorry about sound quality on some bits, you learn by your mistakes 😝, in the morning they were pretty bad. But I have encountered worse. Thanks for watching 👍 ATB Steve
Watching this makes me wish I'd never sold my bike, a CBR 400 pocket rocket, a lovely machine for scratching on those country roads. I like the minimal setup, the bike forms part of the shelter, simple but effective. There are a lot of reports with strange goings on at Kielder and I thought Harwood forest was the hotspot but I think you have found a good area too, ATB
Fell Wanderer glad you liked it, hey if you fancy another bike I sell em for a living.. yes there’s definitely something in that surrounding area, I’m thinking more cat like though at the minute. I do fancy another trip when there is snow on the ground ? ATB Steve
Clever. Disguise the bike and use it to hang a tarp. There's more than badgers in the shadow of those grasslands . stay close to the forest when there's orcs about.
Hi Paul can’t remember the Road name/number but if you Google earth a place called dead water your in the right area. If that’s the one where there is a small bridge your actually just over the border and into Scotland. Enjoy your trip and remember leave no trace ATB Steve 👍
One thing, when you set up your tarp, always set up your sleeping bag, with your bike leaning away from you. You don't want to wake up cuddling with that triumph. Trust me
Hi thanks for watching and subbing its a Unigear Foldable Stainless Steel Wood Burning Backpacking Camping Stove, great bit of kit £20 off Amazon. ATB Steve
Bruce bonge A few people have said that but the ground was an old stone pathway and I had a flat piece of stone and a puck under the stand so really solid. It also made the tarp easier to pull over. But thanks for the concern 😃👍
Great vids Steve, picked up the links fm Youles where u tested the new 1200 Explorer & spent the rest of the night enjoying yr vids. Good effort on the wild camping, what size is yr camo tarp to get over the TEx & still have enough for a shelter. Only ever used an old poncho never bothered to cover the bike, but looking to purchase a bigger tarp now.
TAR 183 Really chuffed that I supplied an evenings entertainment. Glad you enjoyed my Vids. The Tarp is a DD camo 3m x3m bought off Amazon about £40, really useful bit of kit. ATB Steve 👍👍
Thanks Steve. Thought it would be about that size. I was in the garage last night with a tape measure working out sizes. Looking fwd to some nights out!
Great vid mate back to motorbike camping can't beat it. As you no I do a lot of it my self. I would like to no we're it was so I will pop into the shop for a chat soon pal. I don't get bothered by the scottish midges to much I think it's because I Speak there tongue plus thay don't like the English ha ha
John Sinclair see I told you I had something planned.. anyway those midges were English so your going to get eaten alive hahaha 😂😂, see you soon and I'll let you know where it was👍
I've been using a hammock and tarp set up for 6yrs now I do have the option to use my hammock as a 1 man tent with mozzie net although I haven't tried that yet as the hammock is supremely more comfortable . Nice vid's by the way .
Thank you. It's not very rewarding but GD Blankenships (Blenkensopps) are from Northumberland. I excuse myself while I take a selfie in the pardon-me room.
Hi Steve I am riding from scunthorpe to John o groats in June and your vids have inspired me to do a spot of wild camping any tips on how to choose the right place to pitch
John Nimick Hi John have a great trip. Best advice really is have an idea of your route and look at all the green bits it goes through. You can kind of get an upfront idea of the terrain and any possible pull ins. But until you get there you never really know what the ground quality is like. Keep away and off other people’s property if you can. Pitch late and get off earlyish. Take midge repellent especially in June. Be careful with open fires, and most importantly leave no trace you was ever there as best you can. Hope this helps really chuffed I have inspired you ATB Steve
need to get your sound levels right. really enjoyed video. One point is that most people I know would not sleep next to their bike with it slopped towards them. You might get it falling on you never to be rescued.
John Smith sound can be a bit tricky on the iPhone. Working on it tho. That ground was solid gravel with a stone underneath stand and plastic puc.. No way it would have gone over.. But if it had at least I would have died happy 😂😂👍 thanks for watching and commenting ATB Steve
Outdoor Coops stand was in a large puc I always carry, I positioned the bike over a larger embedded stone as well. But to be honest the ground was that compacted with stones I had trouble putting in pegs. No worries whatsoever 👍👍
jr44735 Hi thanks for the concern, a few people have mentioned this. The ground was rock solid and I always use a plastic puc under the stand. Everything 👍
This guy has it right. It's not called Scottland. It's Sca (stop) land. I have never been so envious as to watch him on his cycle. I also do not know how he got rid of the air noise for the recording. He should be a professional if not already.
Beautiful mate...........What a location. Kielder is one of my favorite places. You cant beat a nice rabbit on a open fire. Another strange encounter with a strange animal. Could be badger, deer or..................maybe a black cat lol. Yes im being serious. Iv'e seen a black cat up kielder way crossing a road on my way home. Unfortunately my gear was all packed in the boot so i couldn't get to my camera. I would love to own a bike and drive around scotland wild camping........my dad did it in his younger years......would love the adventure. Anyway.........keep the vids coming. Take care..............Mick
Gotta admit, the bike/tarp combo is an interesting idea. Like the camo use there too. I would rather have a big tarp that can slope straight to the ground and be anchored away from the bike's lean angle though. Nice demo of the Firebox (I assume). .......................... Just an observation about your audio levels, I was having to regularly change them up n down, due to wide variations of loudness, using my volume control. Too loud on the music and side mounted bike cams. Also voice level needs normalisation across your segments. Otherwise good job. :)
I have a question maybe you, or another rider can answer. I honeymooned in Scotland in 2013. Fell in love with the country. I am since divorced, and now ride a LOT (put 10k miles on my bike this year before putting her in storage for the winter). I would LOVE to plan a motorcycle camping trip there in the future. I live in the US, but am enquiring as to if there are any groups that bike camp regularly, what the ideal time of year to go is, and how easy it is to rent a bike there? Thanks!
Bill Reed Hi to the USA, not sure about groups camping over here, I prefer just me or close friends. As to the time of year March to October, heat and moisture really bring out the midges. If you want to hire check out my first vid on motorcycle wild camping Scotland, it tells you were the Bike shop I work at is. We hire motorcycles. Thanks for watching ATB Steve
Excellent! Will do!!! As to the tarp on the bike (I use a tent), I was watching another vid that suggested sleeping on the up side of the bike-away from the way it leans. This way, if, for some reason, the bike tips in the night, it wont fall on you. Now, some bikes, that may not be an issue. I ride an 02 harley road king classic. That bike tips on me, I'm a goner!!! I will certainly check that video out! Thanks Steve, and keep the shiny side up (as they say here)!!
dont worry if you happen to see another run close to you just walk up a little way and have a piss it will let them know you are there and wont come on you by accident
Phillip Payne genuinely was a heart in the mouth time, I could hear something but couldn't see it. I reckon it was a badger people have said they make a lot of noise in the undergrowth. Thanks for the comment ATB Steve
TheWildAtlantic Biker can be a bit tricky at times. A video that I’m currently doing is all about it. A spot that I thought would be uninhabited mid week other bikers had beaten me to it. And then the bad weather came in and I had no Tent. Resorted to a campsite hut 😂. Anyway thanks for watching and check out the next vid Fail 👍 ATB Steve
Fl is just to crowded for me i have another year or so here .I am researching north fl or go back towards south c. I lived in flagler for a wile ,it was tolerable.
Hi Gen when I did that vid it was all shot on an iPhone 7 Plus I think. On bike stuff a cheap action camera made by a Chinese company SJCAM. I now use a Canon g7x mk111 for main stuff and an iPhone 12 max. Thanks for watching 👍
Eduardo Braga Hi Thanks for watching. It is allowed in some areas. But to be honest that parts that aren’t I look for remote areas away from farm houses and ultimately being seen. Hence the Stealthy bit. Scotland is ok apart from a few areas. Where are you from by the way?
G-FRO27 hi I use a new SjCam legend, a lot cheaper than a go pro. Utilising a curved stick on mount to the front side with some extenders to get it right. The helmet I have had a front vent do makes it a bit tricky. Hope this helps
George Foster Hi glad you’re loving them my earlier vids were all on the phone and the mics were hit and miss. Now use a Canon G7x with a little muff to block out wind noise. I was also using a Chinese action camera and that’s always hit and miss. Plus now using a better video editor. It’s like anything a bit of a learning curve. ATB Steve 😃👍
Be careful! They are dangerous when cornered :) I did read somewhere that there are a few wild pigs around the Isles--probably feral hogs... The worst night I ever had camping was in Oregon in a Federal campground that was empty save for me. Nothing bothered me except my imagination. I was the most concerned with the 2 legged critters I think. Slept with St. Beretta in the bag with me!
Sometimes there is nothing worse than a vivid imagination.. And I watch too many Horror movies LOL... I bet you had been watching "The hills have eyes", or worse still for a bloke anyway "Deliverance"... Squeal like a pig boyyy.. I always sleep with a Machete and a knife, no guns over here unfortunately.. ATB and thanks for watching :)
I love the fact that you are pampering your bike more than yourselve! I would go with you on an Adventure!
I've done exactly this on tours in France. When it's windy I put the tarp on the ground first then put the bike right on one edge and pull the tarp up and over the top. That way you've got one edge held down by the weight of the bike. Makes for a quick shelter if it rains too.

Cheers Steve, just ordered one thanks, Bob.
Great video thnx for sharing, may i ask where you got your stove that you was using? looks a great bit of kit id like to get 1 myself. Thanks
Outdoorsy1 Hi it’s a Unigear folding wood stove. On one of my later vids I give it a review. Thanks for watching 👍👍
You set-up on the wrong side if the bike falls over mate!
Bruce bonge A few people have said that but the ground was an old stone pathway and I had a flat piece of stone and a puck under the stand so really solid. It also made the tarp easier to pull over. But thanks for the concern 😃👍

Is wild camping alowed in ingland?
Eduardo Braga Hi Thanks for watching. It is allowed in some areas. But to be honest that parts that aren’t I look for remote areas away from farm houses and ultimately being seen. Hence the Stealthy bit. Scotland is ok apart from a few areas. Where are you from by the way?
steve butler i am brasilian but i live in Portugal 28 years.
Here In Portugal wild camp inst alowed 😔
Eduardo Braga just pick a very remote location what’s the worst that can happen 😃👍
No need to stealth camp in Scotland. Anywhere you fancy. Just take your rubbish with you👍
one tarp for the bike and one for a lower but wider and longer tent

David Clements Hi it’s called a Unigear
@@stevebutler7156 looks great half way between a wee stealth fire pit, and a bbq big enough for a nice cut of meat.

Firat Ozcan basically yeh I suppose I did😃 thanks for viewing 👍

Stevo, whats the succession of mounts that you use for your GoPro onye lid?
G-FRO27 hi I use a new SjCam legend, a lot cheaper than a go pro. Utilising a curved stick on mount to the front side with some extenders to get it right. The helmet I have had a front vent do makes it a bit tricky. Hope this helps
Cheers pal!
Cant do that here, its to crowded.
Karl Kaiser really where are you. Our tiny island is getting more squeezed by the minute 👍

HEY, Man !? ... You rode off and left your camera sitting in the weeds !
phrankus2009 I do it all the time costs me a fortune 😂👍
Love your videos but at times find it difficult to hear what you`re saying.
What a f@#$ view!!!!!!!!
Probably that rabbit's uncle out there sneaking up on you.. You got no pumas, bears or Bigfoots....
George W well that’s what I thought ??
Where do you poop?
The same place you would :)
