This is no joke one of the nicest lego sets I have ever had the pleasure to build. And I didn't find the price as exorbitant as other Star Wars 18+ sets, like the diarama sets. This really felt like expert level design at an affordable cost, and makes for a great display piece even if you don't have much room.

I don't think you are in the wrong for saying this is overpriced. This along with the series of helmets has pushed the pricing limits for displayable type sets. Yes this is a really well done set and there are those that would pay the price. However, if there were no gifts with purchase or 2x VIP points to go along with the set, I don't think it would have sold out as fast as it did.

I was a huge Lego kid growing up and still own quite a bit, but as an adult who now is beginning to pay their own way in life, it is WILD how expensive Lego is. And this is coming from a guy who once used price to part ratios and price to volume ratios to shut down any notion that Lego was overpriced as a teenager. Don't get me wrong, this is a cool model and as much as the building experience is lovely with this medium, I sometimes do really struggle to see the value in Lego adult oriented display models. The fact of the matter is that these are expensive toys with a premium price, which you mostly just look at instead of play with as an adult. If you love the stuff, that's fantastic, but I do get frustrated with people who refuse to hear anything about Lego being overpriced, it has always been expensive, but it has gotten pretty ridiculous over the last few years.

I'd love to see a Mon Calamari Cruiser done in Lego, this midi scale series would be a perfect place for it. Actually, I think most of Star Wars capital ships would fit great in this. I also kinda hope they may change their minds and re-release Nebulon B, like they did a second run of Saturn V rocket.

This set sold out so fast because LEGO either significantly underestimated demand and didn’t produce enough, or because they gave too many to Walmart as an exclusive. A set selling out is not always indicative purely of popularity.
My store got like 12 of this set for launch day. We got 80 Endor heroes brickheadz. We got 26 UCS X-Wings.

This one is a tough one cos it does look awesome and it's a much more affordable and space friendly variant of the ship. But agreed, it's still too expensive; even more awkward is that it's retailing at around the same price as the TIE Bomber, which is now starting to see discounts, as the hype and excitement has died down.
You mentioned cashback, agreed it's a decent way to cushion the blow of these costly sets nowadays; assuming it is successful, I should have the TIE Bomber at 55% off, but only if it works out.

I would get this if it included a Captain/Admiral Piett. Because this is a set that I could see myself be interested in. This despite likewise owning the UCS.
I bought the UCS when I still refused to buy Lego, but considered a one off (which it was for a couple of years). It basically made clear to me that I don't like UCS sets: too big and often not mini-fig compatable. It's impressive on the shelf, and that's all it is. This smaller size is something I could definitely see myself getting and then selling the UCS. But then I'd no longer have a Piett...

I managed to pick this set up in the first week at Walmart, it was the only 1 in stock at the store and it was sold out online. It's now a very nice coffee table display piece. I have the Vader figure from the TIE Bomber set displayed with the Executor on the stand.

  • @Benjamin0119
    @Benjamin0119 Рік тому +1

It is a really nice model for its size. At $70 it's probably over-priced, but it's more affordable than the UCS set when it was new, and especially now.
I'm not a big fan of the price but I'll eat it haha. This will be the first LEGO Star Wars set I get. I usually don't like mixing the two, but this is my favorite Star Wars capital ship, and it has so few toys, models, and miniatures, as it is, and this is a great representation. Plus, I feel the Star Wars sets have really come into form lately. I might get some more, haha.
The Star Wars Technical Commentaries put this ship at around 17 km, through photogrammetry and various methods. Official length is listed as 19 km. Pablo Hidalgo went and measured the actual filming model and the small Star Destroyer model that was built to the same scale, and the ship came out to 13 km. When it was on public display, ILM had an info card in front of it that flatly stated Executor was 18 km. Either way, IT'S BIG, haha! So, I'm not sure how scale or un-scale those Star Destroyers are, but, they are decently small enough to get the size of Executor across, and it is nice to have them included.
The ship is not actually light gray like the Star Destroyers (some say they are white.) It is more of a bluish-greenish-gray. ILM simply called it "the blue Star Destroyer." But I have no idea what the heck color LEGO would've used for this, so this will have to suffice.
I agree they need to make more ships in this size and form factor. Finally make some Mon Calamari ships! I know their curvy shapes are not very LEGO-friendly, but I think it could be managed now, with all the curved elements LEGO has now.
I knew the set sold out the same day, didn't know it was within a couple hours! It's still temporarily out of stock on the website, but my local LEGO store has it. I could get it from Walmart, but then I won't get the VIP points!
Great review as always, JANG! Thanks!

I have calculated it based on what i see in this video, and considering the length of the Executor in-universe of 19km and the length of the model of 44cm, and the length of the ISD of 1.6km, it should have the length of the model of around 3.7cm, which is pretty close to the length of it in this set, considering that 1x1 brick is 8x8mm. So it seems to be scaled pretty well. Correct me if i'm wrong.

I went with the Mando N1 along with my May 1st purchase because of the 5x VIP points. I could have chosen the SSD but decided not to. I have the luxury of living in a country that doesn’t go as ham salad nuts with collectibles releases as the USA does, so I casually opened the Lego website at midnight and put my purchase through in about 5 minutes. Now I can use my VIP points on a big discount on a Galaxy Explorer or something, and wander into a shop sometime later on to buy this set.
All this said, I’m super glad that Lego has moved away from really popular SDCC exclusives and are making them more widely available. That’s one good outcome from the pandemic. The Nebulon B was originally meant to be an SDCC exclusive but they had to adapt, and that’s why the sales process was a mess. But that difficult time has led to this, which would totally have been an SDCC exclusive in previous years, now being available worldwide.

3:17 I was curious just how far off the scale of the regular Star Destroyers was, so I did some math. They’re actually not that far off-stubby (way too wide), but not too bad for length.
Everything I can find agrees that the _Executor_ is supposed to be 19 km long. A regular Star Destroyer is supposed to be 1600m long and 900m wide. Using 44cm ( = 55 studs) for the _Executor,_ that works out to 4.6 studs long, 2.6 studs wide for a Star Destroyer. Those wedge plates for the front are almost a half brick short of their nominal dimensions, so 5.6 studs overall. That’s only +21%. But they’re fully 4 studs wide, which is +53%. Coming up with a design that’s 4.6x2.6 studs and looks anything like a Star Destroyer sound about impossible, but if we could manage 5x3, I’d call that “close enough”.

This set is very awesome, I modded mine to look like a Venator, but nonetheless I couldn’t resist this beautiful build so I got another one anyway! From a far distance it looks almost like a UCS set!

Star destroyers are my favorite Star Wars ships, and I was looking forward to buying this set when it was announced since I like the scale and all, but the price really turned me off tbh. I know it's delusional, but I would have paid 50 for that...
Still great review (as always), have a good one ^^

Yeah, I missed out on this one. I was still able to stack some other Star Wars sets to get my gwp's. They should at least put it on back order before the end of the promo. I hope.

The Executor Star Destroyer was the set I was most excited for, and its the best set of the celebration in my opinion! This was also the best priced one as well; $70 was perfect! I think Lego knocked it out of the park with this one, as well as most of the others. Overall it was really solid May 4th celebration release

the UCS sets - their size and their cost - probably increases the ‘value’ of these smaller sets even if they’re more expensive than they should be. The smaller size and ‘not $700’ makes the relatively high price justifiable.

I would love more capital ships in this scale and also UCS star fighters in minifigure scale. The new UCS X-wing is too large.

  • @Montyh7
    @Montyh7 Рік тому +1

hmm, they are popular but not really my thing, nor is the behemoth behind you, I like sets a little larger like the 75055. Larger than this, but smaller than the UCS (which I do like, but as exceptional models not the norm). I'm looking forward to the Venator but extremely disappointed they went with something so large and pricey.

I would have liked a minifigure, but I also don’t think the set needs one. Still, it could have been neat to be able to display admiral Piett(if he was the one included) beneath the ship he captained.

It doesn't necessarily NEED a minifig but I think it would have been nice to get one to balance out the 40th anniversary brick and to increase value for price 🤷‍♂️

Yea, you're not wrong in saying it's overpriced. Last year, LEGO announced a 20%+ increase in pricing. The Throne Room for $100 should be $75. The Endor Speeder chase, $50. This product imo should be $50-$60 max. If you can wait a year or even until Black Friday and find sales, they'll be cheaper.

I doubt this will restock anytime soon. No one seems to say it, but there are still stock shortages of LEGO and other retail items in general, in certain parts of the USA. I’m not silly enough to pay 50 bucks above retail price to get it.

Was planning not to buy it, just for the reason you said: it is overpriced. Not sure what happened but May 1st when I came home from the Legostore I suddenly had one. Well it looks great, building was fun and it is not as badly overpriced as the helmets lately. At least according to my opinion. I can see others think otherwise.

Great review as always, thanks! I haven't built mine yet - but I don't think the scale of the regular Star Destroyers is that far out? The Executor is supposed to be about 19km long - and a regular Star Destroyer is about 1.6km - really hard to tell from pictures but it looks like the Star Destroyers are around 1/10th the length of the Executor? I guess I'll find out over the weekend when I build it... You think it's expensive for you, it cost me $129.95 NZD here - based on the current exchange rate with the prices you mention, it should really be around $105-$110 NZD.
