Professor Katharine, in my town there was a group of about 9 persons from the US. They gave English lessons for free in the town. I enrolled in. It turned out I could communicate with the native speakers on an excellent level on verious topics. It was my first meeting with the English native speakers face to face. Watching and analysing videos on your channel brought excellent effect.

Very funny & interesting british accent. Same as but different accent were used by britishers in british India during british rule. They were used mixed Indian & English language. For a "Table servant" they used a word "khidmudgaar". During 1857 to 1947, India is a second home for britishers. You can read about this in the book "Women of the Raj" by Margaret Macmillan.

Apples and pears is pretty straight forward. To use the term apples and pears means stairs. So if you are telling someone, "I'm not going to use the lift and going to use the apples and pears instead," it means you're going to use the stairs.

' The Modern RP ' is the most important. That is what the England is known for! I'm not sure whether the Cockney or other varieties of accents of English will get the kind of attention and recognition the Modern RP gets! 🤔 For the convenience of the most of the people in the world, there has to be a standard language which can be used as global lingua franca! No wonder the English language enjoys that status! 😊

I note in the ‘little’, not only ‘t’ is glottal, but the ‘L’ is very heavy dark. Is the dark ‘L’ a distinctive part of the cockney way of speaking?

You so brilliantly explained this Cockney accent ,
thank you so much , Kat !
Being Dutch , I thought for years , not knowing about accents ,
when I heard this accent on TV , that it was the Irish language .
And these people probably were both Irish and drunk , the way
    they pronounced words , haha.
Good that you taught us to recognize that accent .
BTW , Michael Caine , his name did even ring a bell with me ,
famous for the many movies he is in .
    Have a nice weekend !

A Cockney was defined by being born within the Sound of Bow Bells, my wife was a Cockney being born in Guys Hospital in 1939, so after the Luftwaffe reshaped much of the U.K. including much of London particularly the Docks area....Poor old Bow Bells Church as flattened so the end of Bow Bells.
Cockney Rhyming Slang is reported to have started in the early London Prisons allowing the inmates to converse without the Screws understanding.... eventually as the Screws began to understand there was a need to invent double rhyming Slang....So Aristotle rhymes with Bottle....Bottle is made from Glass.... Glass rhymes with ARSE.... So there he plonked is Aristotle.... Sat Down

Hello, Katharine, thank you for this video. As a foreign learner of English, I have been trying to to get used to Modern RP. It is by far the easiest accent to practise. I think I can stick to it whenever I have to speak in English. As far as I know, there are many accents in England. It is said that Yorkshire accent is also difficult to learn. Why not make a video about it? In the novel Wuthering Heights, I don't understand most of what Joseph says.
