I just rebuilt/modded my 2016 YZ250x I bought three months back and it’s hands down the best bike I’ve raced out in the desert doing hare & hound/ all the District 37 desert series races. Stock the YZ250x was a great bike but I just put a big bore kit on it, full Pro Circuit suspension forks and rear shocks, Excel pro series black rims with heavy duty Spokes and galfer oversized wave rotors, Pro Taper fatty bars and triple clamps, IMS 3.2 gallon tank with dry break quick feel, ASV brake away levers and cables, pro taper aluminum throttle tube, D’Cor gripper seat cover, Pro Circuit works pipe and 296 spark arrestor, IMS bigger pegs, Maxxis ties, Works oversized radiator with braises and skid plate and that’s all I’ve done so far. Only a couple things left to do to it like front light bar setup, brake light, new kill switch setup, v-force reeds and a few other thing but the YZ250x is the best bike for your money!!
Sounds like a sweet bike! I'm still loving my yz250 almost "X". You have invested a lot into that bike and it works great for your type of riding which is awesome! What do you plan on powering your front light bar with? I've been doing some night rides with just a helmet light and battery pack setup which works awesome! - Wes
I put the steering stabalizer and bar combo on my yz 250. Not only does it look super cool I can now ride for as long as i want, reduced my arm pump allot and now i can haul but over any type of whoops with total confidence. Thanks for helping me with great setup wes!

I agree Wes I started my Pro FMX career in the late 90's on a YZ250, that bike never let me down not even when hitting the first ever wood FMX ramps! 😬 lol
Thanks Ernie! Like I said this was just about every part and accessory that we carry for this thing! I'd like to say that everything that has been added serves a purpose but there are definitely some cheaper alternatives that would get the job done plenty good. Thanks for watching! - Wes
I had to go out a buy a 2018 yz250. I'm in ontario Canada and they go for 8200 bucks out the door with a super deal from trailside sports. Oversized fuel tank and flywheel weight 11oz are on my wish list. Buddy gave me a set of v force reeds and fmf fatty and 2.1 silencer. Just swaped the bars out for protaper evo woods high and broke my thumb same day working on my KENWORTH logging truck. So waiting for spring to ride now.
Iv'e got an old but dependable WR 200. I have no issue with tossing money at it, but my friends give me grief for it. I agree with your approach, I just need $5600.00 bucks to finish my bike!
Its a lot more fun to beat your buddies and all their newer bikes with a solid old bike that you have completely rebuilt yourself! Run what ya brung! - Wes
Love this build! I’m currently on my 4th yz build, I’m 10k gbp into it and can’t wait for it to haul ass, I’ve taken away some of your design so hopefully looks as good as yours 👍👍
Remember that the steal frame has some flex rather than the rigidity of the aluminum frame. One of the reasons why KTM still has not switched to aluminum frames.
No doubt! Flex in the frame can be a good thing, but they tend to wear out more quickly than a more rigid aluminum frame. Once again, there is no perfect dirt bike out there! You just need to find the one that best suites your needs. Thanks for watching! - Wes
yall should post a vid on a walkthrough of the airbox conversion to fit the 2016 plastics. would love to do that to my yz250 but can't find any tutorial online to do so!
This is a fairly straight forward process. The most in-depth that it gets is the airbox and intake boot swap and with the YZ it's pretty easy. There is an allen bolt that clamps and holds the boot into the airbox. You access that from the top of the airbox. Once you remove that you can pull the boot from the old airbox and install it onto the new airbox in the same fashion. I did have to swap a couple of the plastic threaded clips from the old box to the new one but once I did that everything else is as easy as swapping the plastics. If you run into any questions on this feel free to comment and I'll get right back to you! - Wes
LOVE IT! im rocking an 02 KX250, pretty modded, very similar to this build. Super jealous of the yzx tranny kits that are now available, as i don't have that option. HooRah RM!
Awesome bike! Buttt Why didn't you do the SSS fork conversion!? I did basically everything you did to a T with my 03 wide ratio tranny and everything but with 22mm triples and the SSS fork conversion professionally valved it was so much better than I could ever get the 03 forks to work. And after some time riding I added the ESR325 kit and man does it scream now, and pulls way better through those gaps in that wide ration tranny! Screw a new KTM, my bike may vibrate a bit more but it's dialed better in handling and performance and even with all the mods it's about $3500 cheaper that a stock KTM. A KTM300 with all the wanted mods/exhaust, head mod, guards, skid plate etc etc would prob set you back around $15000 all said and done and it still mite only be 'slightly' better if that!
What are the pros and cons on their street frame bikes over the aluminum? I have an 01 yz250. I want to get an 02 or newer to build and I can't find much info on the steel vs aluminum frame YZs.
Kind of a long shot, but do you guys ever let an outsider get involved in one of your bike builds? I live local to your payson location and would love to do a bike build with you guys.
No doubt! With the bike not changing much over the last decade or so it makes a lot of sense to keep the bike you have and set it up for your type of riding. I thought hard about doing the SSS conversion but couldn't wait any longer to start riding it and I am VERY pleased with my suspension that Precision Concept set up. Thanks for watching! - Wes
Ugh, i also picked up a bike that was maintained by a caveman, bent the cage on the air boot seal, Sand-injection! but those tires...did they shatter when you touched them?
Engines don't tend to last long with "sand-injection"! Ha ha I want to hang those old tires/ wheels up on the wall! To be honest I'd never personally seen a 20" wheel so I think it's awesome! I wanted to run the gold setup and looked for a 20" tire for a while but didn't have any luck and decided to throw on the Tusk Impacts! - Wes

I have a 2004 YZ 250 complete rebuild that I am doing the winter here in Michigan. Have you ever found a top triple clamp to replace the 04 fixed bar mount and update to the newer style bar mount? I would like to run the Mako bar mount on this build but want to maintain the KYB OC forks.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it! The CR250 was a great bike! It's a shame Honda doesn't make it anymore. I prefer a two stroke for really any type of riding (especially enduro)! I might be a little slower in some areas but overall I am having a better time while I'm on the 2T. - Wes
Rocky Mountain ATV MC thanks Wes, I'm trying to decide what to buy next. Currently on a 14 WR450f and on the fence between 2 & 4 strokes. I think I'll try and have a ride of a few before making the decision. The lower weight of the two stroke is definitely a big appeal. 👍🏻
I’m building a 1990 cr 125 motor and throwing it inside a 2000 yz 250 rollin chasis will it look goofy ? I plan on mounting it as OEM as possible I want the bike to look like a normal 125.
Hi *JustAnR1!* Check it out here: www.rockymountainatvmc.com/Sales/770/2004-Yamaha-YZ250-Bike-Build We used the Yamaha OEM Plastic Conversion Kit. Thanks for watching.

Attack Graphics built them for me. You can build your own set of custom graphics on our website. www.rockymountainatvmc.com/Sales/51/Attack-Graphics?il_source=Home&il_medium=Promo-Attackgraphics If you are interested in these specific graphics let me know and I may be able to work something out. - Wes
No it wont. You will want to purchase this kit from Polisport that includes a new 2015 Airbox. www.rockymountainatvmc.com/p/1044/69681/Polisport-MX-Restyling-Kit- . Then when these plastics are due for replacing, you'll be able to just buy the 2015 replica plastic kits from here on. Thanks
I wonder if the locations of the screws of the new plastics (2015) coincide with the locations of the screws of the old fuel tank of 2004 ???? Or I need to change the fuel tanks for fitting with the plastic kit of 2015? Thanks a lot Sir
Rad build!! You said you kept stock gearing minus the wr kit, so 1st gear is stock yz? I'm just wondering how first gear is in the tight, slow, rocky single track stuff as I might do a similar build and ride lots of the tight stuff. Keep it up!
Thanks Dylan! Yep! The final drive gearing is all stock so front sprocket is a 14 and rear is a 50 tooth. The transmission is where the different gearing comes in. I made my transmission a "wide ratio" transmission from the YZ250X. 1st and 2nd gear is still stock and these are both shared between the YZ250 and the YZ250X. The difference between the bikes comes in 3rd, 4th, and 5th gears. 3rd gear on the "X" model is actually slightly closer to second than the YZ250 and 4th and 5th are both taller than the YZ250 gearing. I've been riding this bike for a while now all all different kinds of terrain and the new setup has been awesome! I find myself riding in 3rd gear a lot. 1st has been just fine on all the single track that I ride even with it being the stock YZ250 setup. I haven't wanted to change anything yet. Do you have a YZ already? If so, what year is it? -Wes
Rocky Mountain ATV MC I don't have 1 yet, I'm out here in CA so I'll probably get a 99-02 so I can still ride year round anywhere, after 02 they restricted riding in forests by the model year. I'm on an 2008 excr450 now, love the plate for dual sport action but the thing is not ideal in the tight stuff. I have been spoiled with the E button big time though! If I go this route, are there any critical difference from 99-02? Thanks!
Getting parts for my yz250 is soo addicting and kinda dumb. Bought every part brand new, no used parts at all. Cost me like $3000 just to make it look good, think if I sell it in the future I will definitely be loosing a lot. As I seen fully custom yz250 for a lot cheaper then my build
Still has a rubber frame and a turd of fork. '06 and up would have been a far better choice. Also is your 6 brand number with or without labor? Is that retail on the parts? Seems low to me.
Can someone direct me to a Rocky mountain Engine rebuild? unless there isn't one. I have to rebuild my cr125r soon, and replace a crankcase. I have some doubts in my ability.
Hmm what year, those are not too bad (have done 92,94,96,01, all pretty much that same). Will need a few specialty tools, can be done without some but makes it a ton easier and safer. Watching a few video's never hurts but no replacement for the Honda Service Manual. Then it's just about organization of your parts as you pull them. Enjoy!
I just completely rebuilt my 2005 yz250 engine, and like you I was really nervous about taking on the task. I had done top ends but never anything past that. I went ahead and did it myself and it was not nearly as difficult as I thought it would be, just take pictures of everything as you go and put everything that goes together in labeled bags. If you really want to go the extra mile you could film the whole tear down so you can refer to it while rebuilding. But if you can do a top end job I'd say you should be able to do the bottom end as well. Also, you might be able to find videos of other people doing it on UA-cam to help you through the process. Just make sure you get the proper tools so you don't have any problems! Case splitter, crank puller/installer, flywheel puller, clutch holding tool, etc.
Hey Wes I love the bike. I've got an '06 Rm250 that I've rebuilt very similar to yours, but more single track specific. We've got more than a lifetime of mountain trails out the door and not too many hare scrambles... I threw a Lectron Carb on to balance the seasonal elevations changes without having to re-jet, a fly wheel weight, gnarly pipe and TC2 silencer. One question I had for you - have you ever had any overheating issues running an oversized tank on slow single track with no fan? All the orange bikes run fans, but none of the Japanese bikes do - however they are out numbered 10-1 on the trails. Some friends that ride technical trails on YZ250Xs swear against oversized tanks for heat issues... I wondered if you've heard of this? Cheers
Hi Marc, thanks for the comment. It sounds like you have a sweet RM250! I'd love to see a picture. The lectron carbs are sweet. We've had a few guys add them onto bikes here and they perform flawlessly. We put one of the 2004 CR250 bike build as well. Not sure if you saw that video or not? ua-cam.com/video/G53MWAG-VlI/v-deo.html During the years that I've owned the YZ I have never had overheating issues. I've been on some gnarly trails and super slow technical riding and not had a problem. The oversized tank definitely blocks a little bit of the air coming through the rads and around the engine, but it hasn't been enough to make a difference. I also went to a high pressure rad cap and the Boyesen Supercooler Water Pump Cover and Impeller Kit to help avoid any issues out in the desert and on the trails. A high pressure cap is a great way to up the boiling point of your coolant and get around a lot of the overheating issues. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have more questions - Wes
Great video! What’s your thoughts on the lectron carb? I notice the more professional builds I see no lectron but tons on the more amateur builds. This is exactly what I’m after now. Rebuilding a YZ250 for woods hairscramble type riding. I haven’t ridden a two stoke in years and want a project as well. Only thing is the yz s are getting more expensive on Craigslist. I guess people know the value as many others are wanting a project build themselves.
Honestly, I think some riders still run a regular carb because you can do a little bit more custom jet work on it. However, I know guys that run the lectron on fully race-built motors and love them. The best part about a lectron is that its basically plug and play and you don't need to make any changes when you change in elevation. My friend has a 125 with a lectron and he can go from here in Utah where it's 5000-7000 feet of elevation and drive to California and ride at sea level and literally make zero changes and the bike runs awesome. You couldn't do that with a regular carb. Hope this helps.
Rocky Mountain ATV MC ya thanks helps tons I just hate messing with jetting going up and down elevation and call me under the rock but just stumbled across the lectron carb otherwise I just used jd jetting kit. Thanks again for the video I especially like it was geared for the trails and not just track because can’t afford to get hurt these days and the track seems to increase the chances and so the build related to me more.
I highly doubt pivot works manufactures bearings & seals, they most likely source them from a bearing company and have their name stamped on and resell them at an inflated price. I just go directly to a bearing supplier as they are much cheaper.
Thanks for watching Brian and yes, I think it turned out awesome! I am under 6k total investment for this bike. ua-cam.com/video/CcTbkdm9Af4/v-deo.htmlm46s MSRP on a brand new YZ250X is $7,499 so deciding between paying that for a completely stock bike or this for a bike completely rebuilt and setup with all my aftermarket goodies? I chose the '04 PS. I might be waiting until Yamaha releases a YZ250X with an easy button ha ha #fingerscrossed - Wes
lol the way you pronounced Acerbis made me laugh so hard! im 99% sure its pronounced A-sir-biss. NOT Uh-chair-bees lol Anyways.. I love these videos that you all do where you build an old bike and bring it back from the dead and then go over everything you do to it!!
Hmmmm, interesting you point that out. I'm actually 110% sure that you're incorrect on the pronunciation of Acerbis. They actually made a shirt showing how to pronounce their name correctly. I highly suggest you give it a look or consider buying one. here's a link. goo.gl/images/BjnS5d Have a good day.
Thanks for the comment. This bike definitely wasn't worth much when I got it! It needed pretty much everything and it took a lot of time but it was a fun experience to build this bike. It was for sure brought back from the dead and now I think it will run with most any new two stroke! - Wes
I always wondered how to say that word...I just recently noticed I've made a mistake with Boyesen, I have been saying it Boy-zeen since I was a kid. D'oh.

did this build to a 2003 YZ250. Amazing to ride.
Better than a brand new bike and less than a brand new bike, Personal opinion

these bikes are amazing. I just bought a new 2017 YZ 250 2 stroke last year
Disloyal Dashie how much different is a 2017 from like an 04-05?
that's my bike! absolutely love it.....

KEEP IT STOCK AND KEEP UP ON THE MAINTENANCE LIKE THE MANUAL SAYS AND THERES NO REASON TO BUY REALLY ANYTHING ELSE... EXCEPT MAYBE SOME RIDING SKILLS
choff60 most people could probably stay under 3k and be satisfied
Awesome build!!! And pretty cheap under 5,500 great investment, Yamahas are bullet proof!!!

Gorgeous creation well done, i love the ole steel framed YZees
Thanks Boyd! I am loving this thing! Lots of fun to ride and WAY more smiles per dollar compared to a new bike! :)
I wNted to see him rip it more! that looked like a bad ass spot for riding
That thing is sick, love the old two-stroke builds. But the break calipers need to be coated in cerakote!

i wish there was shops like RM in Australia

Beautiful bike, love the steel frame yz’s. Guy looks to be a pretty dang good rider too!
That was a cool rear axle non spin part
that bikes sick !! good job there I like that one .
We think so too! Thanks for watching! - Wes
that's a badass bike... I got an 04 also. love it!
Haha. Thanks *KD Customs!* Long live the YZ250.
is it anyway for me to order that graphics kit?
*Great build and awesome bike love the idea of older bikes new again!!* 👌

Super nice bike... there's lots of ways he could of brought the cost down on this build. Goes to show us old horses can still be great.
So waiting for spring to ride now.
really good episode. .. love the build
In all 6,000 is not that bad that a little less than a new bike and it's all fresh with aftermarket parts
Cool Vid.
Thanks for sharing.
- Wes
Wicked build!
its like you took and old dog off the street and gave it a new lease of life
...and a new hair cut! haha. Thanks *billy bilo*
haha yeah! it looks dope man
Appreciate the feedback *billy bilo*! Thanks for checking out our video
must be nice having an unlimited budget
Love this build! I’m currently on my 4th yz build, I’m 10k gbp into it and can’t wait for it to haul ass, I’ve taken away some of your design so hopefully looks as good as yours 👍👍
awesome bike really digging the gas tank and the skid plate needed for my 03
Remember that the steal frame has some flex rather than the rigidity of the aluminum frame.
HooRah RM!
Thanks *Tbank86*. Glad you liked the build!
sweet build
Thanks Tommy G!
I like it when you do 2 stroke builds. You should do some more 2 stroke quads and see what you can do with an older bike like an 89 kx 250.
A new KTM 250exc or a 300exc comes already all setup. But I really like your YZ also, looks awesome
I find myself riding my 2003 yz250 woods set up more than my 2016 ktm350
I have an Esr 325. How much does the Wr tranny cost about? My 03 suspension is dialed I wouldn't want to change mine.
Probably because the 2004 was the first year of he 48mm fork, vs 46mm of the earlier yzs
What would you rather have?

Saying this if the other bikes were still in production
You know what I would pick! Ha ha You know riding anything 2 stroke is going to be a good time! - Wes
Anymore two smoker is better than a slow stroke,,, but nothing is more reliable than a Yamaha YZ 2t.
Do you have a picture of your kick stand and were dix you get it ?!?

Sweet build, just needs Tubliss! ;)
What are the pros and cons on their street frame bikes over the aluminum? I have an 01 yz250. I want to get an 02 or newer to build and I can't find much info on the steel vs aluminum frame YZs.
When ordering graphics for the polisport restyle kit would I change my bike to a 2015 when ordering the graphics ? My bike is a 2005 250
Yes, that's correct. But let them know you have 05' lower fork guards and you'll be all set. Thanks
Rocky Mountain ATV MC alright thanks for clearing that up
That bike was competitive in stock for
Kind of a long shot, but do you guys ever let an outsider get involved in one of your bike builds? I live local to your payson location and would love to do a bike build with you guys.
bad ass bikes , my 02 is updated with sss and a few other mods, cheaper than a new 2017 .
- Wes
Love it!
- Wes
Can’t find these handle bars anywhere
Here is a link www.rockymountainatvmc.com/Sales/2033/Fasst-Flexx-Handlebars?UA-cam&Fasstflexxhandlebars&Description&UA-camvideos Thanks for watching! - Wes
I can't find the ignition cover on your website. Do you have a link?
Stay tuned! The ignition cover is expected to be in stock sometime in October. - Wes
I have a question, the rear arm is the same at yz 2022?
Awesome !!!
I have a 2004 YZ 250 complete rebuild that I am doing the winter here in Michigan.
Have you ever found a top triple clamp to replace the 04 fixed bar mount and update to the newer style bar mount?
I would like to run the Mako bar mount on this build but want to maintain the KYB OC forks.
what do you guys run for jets at elevation? going out west with mine and have no clue where to start?
thanks in advance
Are those the stock plastics? The front fender looks newer
*Eli Mangone* No, it's a restyle plastic kit we sell on our website. Check them out! www.rockymountainatvmc.com/Sales/770/2004-Yamaha-YZ250-Bike-Build
Great video, enjoyed watching. My first MX-er was a 99 CR250 so this really took me back. Do you prefer the two strokes for enduro riding?
Hah. Any time you buy a bike more than about 3 years old, just expect to COMPLETELY rebuild the ENTIRE bike.
Where does the kit come from and what brand is it?? Thanks.
If I keep my yz125K, it's an way older model, but would love to give it a face lift and make it look way newer
I think a 125 ripper would be an excellent bike to build! There isn't many things better than ripping around on a one deuce nickel! - Wes
I’m building a 1990 cr 125 motor and throwing it inside a 2000 yz 250 rollin chasis will it look goofy ? I plan on mounting it as OEM as possible I want the bike to look like a normal 125.
Hi what plastic kit is on this beast? Sorry if you said in the video I must have missed it.
Hi *JustAnR1!* Check it out here: www.rockymountainatvmc.com/Sales/770/2004-Yamaha-YZ250-Bike-Build
We used the Yamaha OEM Plastic Conversion Kit. Thanks for watching.
What parts did you use to hold the CR style front brake line to the fork guard?
I drilled a couple holes in the guide hooks of the fork guard and secured it with zip ties. Works like a charm! - Wes
hi how i can buy a wide radio gears.for my yz 250 2000
www.rockymountainatvmc.com/Sales/770/2004-Yamaha-YZ250-Bike-Build Here's the link to our YZ250 Bike Build parts page where you can find and buy the YZ250 Wide Ratio Transmission Kit along with the other parts of this build. Thanks for watching! - Wes
How'd you get graphics for it
Attack Graphics built them for me. You can build your own set of custom graphics on our website. www.rockymountainatvmc.com/Sales/51/Attack-Graphics?il_source=Home&il_medium=Promo-Attackgraphics If you are interested in these specific graphics let me know and I may be able to work something out. - Wes
Hi, i have an yz250 and i would make this too, but how did you rework the cylinder head? which part should be reworked?
Will a 2015 plastics kit go straight onto an 03/04 yz250?
Thanks
Oh thanks guys!
Hi Sir, I'm interresting by the 2015 plastic kit for 03/04 YZ 250 but I wonder if we should not change the fuel tank?
I wonder if the locations of the screws of the new plastics (2015) coincide with the locations of the screws of the old fuel tank of 2004 ???? Or I need to change the fuel tanks for fitting with the plastic kit of 2015? Thanks a lot Sir
pascal mangin fuel tanks are the same 02- onwards
Front disc guard needed 🙌
-Wes
Rocky Mountain ATV MC
I don't have 1 yet, I'm out here in CA so I'll probably get a 99-02 so I can still ride year round anywhere, after 02 they restricted riding in forests by the model year.
Tubeless tires ?? I know u said tubes do u have an opinion on this matter??
How much was the rebuild?
ua-cam.com/video/CcTbkdm9Af4/v-deo.htmlm46s Enjoy! :) - Wes
What’s the song used at the beginning?
Can someone direct me to a Rocky mountain Engine rebuild? unless there isn't one. I have to rebuild my cr125r soon, and replace a crankcase. I have some doubts in my ability.
Here you go: ua-cam.com/play/PLQNbY8vNfRmXMBsvYsmT9a9Xi3EQaT0S9.html
Thank you!
Do a crf150rb build
I highly doubt pivot works manufactures bearings & seals, they most likely source them from a bearing company and have their name stamped on and resell them at an inflated price. I just go directly to a bearing supplier as they are much cheaper.
Ok so the bike is a 2004, the plastics are a conversion kit for 2015, is the gas tank for a 04 or a 15
The 2004 and 2015 actually use the same part number for the gas tank.
www.rockymountainatvmc.com/parts/acerbis-fuel-tank-p?v=667
Saweet bike though!
Where could I get a gas tank like that for my 05 yz250?
I also live in canada
Sick smoker!
Damn son how much did you spend on that thing? It looks bad ass all don't get me wrong but I feel with that much invested you can buy a brand new yz
I chose the '04
PS. I might be waiting until Yamaha releases a YZ250X with an easy button ha ha #fingerscrossed

Thats right! - Wes
looking to do the exact same thing with a 05 yz125 sorry but I totally stole some ideas from this haha
That is what we want to hear *BOSTON IRISH GARAGE Wrentham MA!*
I want to buy it
lol the way you pronounced Acerbis made me laugh so hard! im 99% sure its pronounced A-sir-biss. NOT Uh-chair-bees lol
Anyways..
D'oh.
