Excellent explanation. I came to Uke from guitar and have a tenor with high G because I like the contrast. When I come across a low G piece to try I capo a guitar at the 5th fret and just use the top four strings.
This is an excellent video and a great explanation of high G vs low G advantages/disadvantages. You really helped me! I just need two tenor ukulele set up both ways! Thanks!
Glen Rose is a jazz musician/teacher with courses on jazzy ukulele. He says he highly recommends using a low G if you want to play beautiful jazz chords. Here's his explanation and demo: Why I use a Low G on my Ukulele - Glen Rose ua-cam.com/video/mLq91wmtevU/v-deo.html . I use an Aquila Red low-G non-wound strings on my tenor and concert ukes with low G. They don't squeak when you slide your finger along the string, whereas metal-wound low-G strings make an annoying squeak. Some people say the Aquila Reds break too easily. I haven't had that problem. When they're new, I tighten them gradually to give them hours to stretch and adapt.
I watched that video! A looooong time ago when I was teaching myself about jazz and chord melody. I bought a low G string and… I didn’t vibe with it, at first. Over time I did but the better my arranging skills got that more I used the high G for jazz, emphasizing fluid melodies over bigger chords. My low G I mostly use to strum my favorite cowboy songs on hahaha
That was interesting. Nice ukulele there too. My mother in law has one from Hawaii, it’s a high G and the sound hole is the Hawaiian islands. I only have 1 ukulele. A Mitchell concert high G. I love it.
Tyler, I like that Ohana you’re playing! 😊 I’ll play it like that for awhile, but I have some bari-tenor strings (dGBE and DGBE) that I want to try out. My hands ache whenever I try to play a baritone ukulele.
That is instinct for sure but push yourself with the high G and explore the comfort zone. It is very cool for instrumental styles and playing melody. Well, do what you enjoy but if you have two ukuleles keep one high G.
High, low, 8-strings & Banjolele …you know you need one of each…and possibly an electric too🤔🤗🤩!!! I put a low G on a concert that I’d bought as a ‘cheaper’ Uke for outdoors & boating ……😮😵💫🤯!!!…..it’s now my favourite go-to Uke, it utterly changed the volume & tone. Get yourself a low G string and just try it on all your regular ukes, you might just make a pleasant discovery😊.
@@TenThumbsProductions I got a zebrawood composite concert at the Aloha markets, Oahu. It’s cosmetically a ‘Factory Second’, it sounded nice enough but when I tried that wound G …🤯🤯🤩👍. I really recommend everyone that’s thinking about a low G to just buy a single low G string and try it on their uke collection 😊👍.
They an be a lot of fun, I don't think they make great go to Ukuleles but they sound amazing for certain types of songs. I really love way they sound when you fingerpick. That is really a personal preference as you can play any song you want to with them.
Excellent review of Low G vs High G, especially for a new uke player like myself! I finally have a clear explanation and will take your advice and stick with my concert high g uke till I’m comfortable, then I see a low g tenor in my future. Great video!
I had to switch to a high g to work with Yousician. I sadly gave away 2 other tenors with low g to my daughter (I say sad because I DOUBT she uses them). I NEED another tenor. Guess I need to win 1, eh.
I've been playing my 8 string uke a lot recently. It has both low and high G. It is supposed to have 2 different C's and drone on the 2 highest , but I have a drone on the C's as the high C ( oh yeah!!!!) is a bit too high.
It's pretty funny that you've done this video because I have been looking up videos on low g strings. Seeing as the songs I play are guitar songs, I may aswell try to sound more like a guitar. Question, wound or unwound? What's your preference?
@@TenThumbsProductions Thank you for this well done video. Have spent many hours today on the net researching Low G strings. I was leaning towards a wound Low G at first, but read comments including yours saying they don't last very long. I have a solid mahogany Kala tenor, which came with D'Addario Titanium strings with high G. I like more of a deeper guitar sound over the traditional ukulele sound. I am considering a Worth Brown fluorocarbon Low G set of strings, or D'Addario EJ99TLG - Pro-Arte Carbon Ukulele String Set. Any feedback appreciated. Thank you.
Please dont tempt me: Just got new strings to my 2 Tenors: DadRio EJ65s and Aquila New Nylguts: nice ones both for the same model CONdorwood! ( for some reason, call me wild bill hickup, I happen to have 2 wounded G strings fo tenors...) I know I can change the plain G back! Oh Lordy how them ukes are soo complicated, Buster Keaton used to wear one in his back pocket...now them youths having smart phones in their back pockets..., Fashion able...so its notyet Lucky to be a strat playa!!
That depends more on the ukulele. I’ve played sopranos that sounded great at the 12th fret and tenors that have no sustain at the 10th. I would say the best thing you could do is get your hands on one and remember anything over the 12th fret is a bonus.
Okay, we're 6 minutes in and i don't know if you are going to cover anything but obvious facts. Apparently, a lot of people like a long, drawn out explanation of how many extra notes, and the note names. Maybe some thumbnails would help.
At one point in time you didn’t know this information, you learned it. This is for people who aren’t where you are at. No need to get all bent out of shape.
This is the best demonstration of Low G v High G that I've seen. Thanks Tyler ❤❤❤
Really like this format. Conversational. Like chilling.
Thanks! First time I’ve tried something like that.
@@TenThumbsProductions More please
Thank you so much...that was a great video explaining the pros and cons of both G's.
This is the most helpful video I found on this subject! Thank you for sharing your experience ❤
Great to hear!
I love playing my low G ukulele ❤🎶
Nice and easy to understand; more low G blues please.
Excellent video, explanation and advice! 😎

It’s soooo much bigger
I like the low “g” enough that I ended up with two. One tenor and one Baritone restrung low “g” C E A. I really enjoy the fullness of the lower notes.
As a guitar player first I have lean towards that low G on the uke.

I met someone that had a soprano body with a tenor neck and low G, wild but it sounded great.

Love this explanation.
My beer drinking buddy. Hopefully we can share a margarita soon.
Yes
I also use low g on my ukulele and it is tuned to A , try it, its a lot easy to play your ukulele
I seen a uke player who equip a ukulele with both a low G and high G So actually had 5 strings
Have you ever done this?

I have both low and high G ukes.
This is how I've had my soprano set up for about a year. I down tune a half step on all strings so it's really a Gb
The Lightnin Hopkins way! Total respect!
The ‘close out pick’ was the intro to ‘Lean on me’ Bill Withers wasn’t it? 🤔👍
I forgot let me listen 👂
Yes.

Tyler, is that a baritone body Ohana tenor? You like it?
Yea, that is exactly what it was and I LOVED it.

Blues challenge in august… will see what type of Uke we are giving away!
I use a nylon guitar d string for my g string and it sounds good is there something better?
@@GerdLPluu Thanks for the tip. I’ll check it out. I don’t mind spending a little bit more on strings.

8 string? Did someone say Stairway?
Great info. Do I need to alter the nut for low G?
Yes. The string is thicker, so you will have to file the slot slightly wider and deeper.
On my tener I didn’t have to, but I would say on many ukuleles yes. Throw it on and see!

I actually snap the wound strings on the ukulele, I’ve found unwound last longer and the sound isn’t that different.

Big low G guy here!
Hey can you teach how to play Planet Caravan riff by Black Sabbath?
I haven’t done in Black Sabbath in a low time but I was considering war pigs 🐽
I was looking at one and wondered how accessible the upper frets are.

It's nice that you make your videos at your grandma's house
🤯
Can you start with B instead of a G
You mean can the lowest note on the lowest string be tuned to B? That will create a lot of tension on the neck and it is bad for the guitar.
Low G or high G? YES! 😃
You have the right attitude!
Btw love your tats
