7 Basic Etiquette Rules Most of Us Keep Breaking

  • Do you have good manners? They are as diverse as the people who show them. There are numerous etiquette rules, and many are only applicable in certain countries. Thus, Eskimo people rub noses when they greet each other, the Japanese always take their shoes off before entering a house, and Thai citizens will never show their shoe soles - it’s considered inappropriate.
Nevertheless, there are some etiquette rules that should be followed no matter which nationality you are or where you live. For example, you shouldn't bring your pets (mostly dogs) with you everywhere you go. Other people won't enjoy your big clumsy dog. A small barking dog won't make them happy either. The same goes for when you're invited to a house party. Always ask if you can take your dog with you. Unfortunately, some of these important rules are frequently disregarded nowadays, so if you wanna learn more about them, watch the video!

    SUMMARY:
    - Don't place your bag on the table or the floor next to you in a restaurant. Either hang it on your chair or a hook. You can sometimes find the latter on the side of or directly underneath the table.
    - If you're late to a group exercise class, don't barge your way through everyone toward your favorite spot. It's your fault that you’re late, so just take whatever space is available, and don't block the equipment.
    - After you’ve finished with weight machines, reset them to the minimum weight. This way, the next person who uses them won't injure themselves if they start doing exercises without looking.
    - There are 3 types of people in this world: those who arrive early, those who arrive on time, and those who arrive late. If you aren't the first type, you'll inevitably have to pass in front of people at the theatre, at the movies, in a concert hall, or in any other place that is equipped with seats. The only right way to do it is by facing the other people and not turning your back toward them.
    - If an invitation says “Regrets only,” you should only respond if you’re sure that you will NOT attend. Otherwise, the host will count on you being there.
    - “RSVP” (“respondez s'il vous plait,” which is French for “please respond”) means that you must write or call the host to confirm your presence at their event. You should do this within the requested period of time.
    - If you aren't sure which fork you should use for each dish, start with the one farthest from your plate. Then work your way toward your plate.
    - If you're in a small group of up to 4 people in a restaurant, wait until everyone has been served before you start to eat. If it's a business or formal meal, you can begin when the host asks you to do so.
    - Casual Attire - This can be anything from a T-shirt and jeans to a pair of shorts and a blouse. It's a good idea to find out if you're going to be inside or outside. You can also ask others what they’re going to wear.
    - In most companies, Casual Friday means that you can swap your pants or skirt for a pair of jeans and leave your tie at home.
    - Business Casual - Being neat is the answer here. Ditch clothing that is too tight or oversized. Just be stylish!
    - Formal Business - This is perfect for professionals who want to always look dashing and are aiming to climb the career ladder. A suit and dark dress shoes for men, and pumps, a skirt, and a blazer for women.
    - When standing in line at a coffee shop, don't talk on the phone. Especially when the barista has already started asking you questions. It's impolite to make everyone wait and listen to your conversation.

If you are with someone in a restaurant, talk to that person. Don't play games on the phone or text someone who is not there. Also, if you are getting on an elevator, wait until the people getting off actually get off so they don't have to push past you to exit. And when you go through a doorway, actually go through it. Don't stop in the doorway to speak to someone or to look around to determine which direction to go.

My biggest “Pet Peeve” when it comes to inviting people to parties (Dinner or otherwise) is when someone you’ve invited brings along other people, who you don’t even know, without asking if it’s alright to bring these people to the event. 😡
When my Ex and I were still married, and he owned his Hotel Furniture Liqudating business, we’d have a Company/Family Christmas Party, (usually, at least 50 people) every year, out at our home. It never failed, the wife of one of my Ex’s Employees would always bring someone to these parties that neither my Ex, nor I knew, without calling to ask if it was alright, before she just showed up, with them! How rude! 😡. I kept asking her to call if she wanted to bring a stranger, into my home. After the second time, of her still not calling, I simply stopped inviting her and her husband, to these parties. 😔

Agree with you, but at this point I would be happy just to receive an answer to an invitation. I don't get it; growing up, I remember my parents throwing parties and cookouts all the time and as a child, going to birthday parties. I used to throw a party every year for my child's birthday and I couldn't get hardly anyone to respond. Sometimes people would show up, sometimes not. After a few times of seeing my daughter heartbroken, I gave up. I've tried to throw dinner parties and some people would show up without rsvping, half the time I couldn't get them to respond at all, people would say yes then not show, etc. I gave up.

Sherria B- I *never* do a kind thing expecting gratitude.
But if you are going to extend yourself unbidden, then also please don’t do it as a lame way of hitting on someone or deliberately creating a passive-aggressive scenario. I have seen men use holding doors as a way to harass far younger women. Unnecessary. I’ve also heard people say things like “You’re welcome, b*tch” after holding a door and not getting that “thank you” - that is NOT kindness, that’s ego, maybe even a psychiatric issue. If one finds themselves doing such things, please stop being “nice” and worry about yourself.

I would like to add to the list.
1.) At the grocery store, be mindful of which lane you use and make sure it’s not an express lane, if you have significantly more items than allowable for the express lane.
If you’re just a few items over, fine, not a big deal, but if you have a full cart, you have no business in an express lane.
That “20 items or less”, exists for a reason, so people who are only buying two or three things don’t have to wait 10 minutes behind someone with $300 in groceries.
Cashiers typically are not allowed to refuse to check customers out, even if they are are egregiously breaking that rule, and it’s rude to the cashier, who is in a bad position, because their checkout area is not designed to accommodate so much stuff, and makes more work for them.
Not to mention it’s rude to customers who have to wait forever behind you, when their objective is to check out the few things they have and get out quickly.
At any checkout, especially self checkout, do not use your cellphone.
It slows you down, and holds up the line.
At any checkout, have your coupons already sorted out and in your hand ready to go.
Do not wait until you are in line, to do this, holding everyone up.
When you are done checking out, have received your receipt, and gotten all your bags, GET OUT OF THE WAY IMMEDIATELY.
Do not take your sweet time closing up your wallet, putting it back in your purse, grabbing your keys out of your purse, snapping it up, making sure everything is in order, and telling your child to sit down in the cart, before moving out of the line.
You can do that after you get out of everybody else’s way.
2.) At a gas station, if you’ve already pumped your gas, move your car to a parking to space.
Do not block the pump with your empty car for 20 minutes while you go inside and shop, so no one else can use it.
If it’s going to be a quick in and out to pay and leave, fine.
But if you’re going to be in there awhile, move your car, so someone else can use the pump.

It runs the whole gathering to me. 3 when people put their feet on your coffee table. On one hand, putting your purse on the floor is not good because it is so dirty. For goodness sake, never transfer it from the floor to the tabletop. However, in the world we live in, it's a better idea to put your purse in a place where it is least likely to be swiped. I prefer to put it in a chair next to me or at my side in a booth, but I will put it on the floor if I have to. Hanging it on the back of the chair isn't safe anymore. My son has autism, but you can't tell by looking at him, so, yes, I'm "playing that card" because I have been there - being judged by people who have absolutely no idea what's going on, what I'm going through, what my child is going through, or what I have already tried to remedy the situation. My child could have a complete meltdown over loud music or a crowded restaurant, but not always. If it happened, it happened, but the judgmental stares and comments still came. All I could say is "he's autistic," but I should not have to go around explaining that to total strangers just to make them understand. People shouldn't just jump to conclusions and think that the kid is just a brat or spoiled. You don't know if the child is special needs or not. Some parents do not have the resources needed to find respite care. Even so, services for us were just once a week. So, stop thinking you know what kids are brats and which ones are special needs because you really have no way of knowing. Be compassionate and try to put yourself in the parent's shoes. Maybe something really is going on with the family or the child. It's not your place to judge. If you're going in public, deal tf with it.

When it comes to young children, if you cannot find a babysitter, you NEED to contact the host, or simply do not attend.
Just because you have children, it doesn't mean you should take them with you everywhere you go. There is a time and a place for everything, and some events are not suitable for children as a matter of safety. Don't belligerently force your children into situations that may not be suitable for their safety or wellbeing. It's called being an entitled parent.
As far as pets or elders go, it can be equally disturbing depending on the level of care involved, and it's a shame that our society functions this way, but these events do occur and each invited guest needs to be mindful of the overall experience for everyone. If you want to be selfish about it, go ahead... but you will find that invitations tend to pass you by.
Just be realistic. Plus, if you're that put out by the idea of not being able to bring your child, your pet, or your elders with you, then maybe you need to step back and reconsider why you know such people that exclude your loved ones in the first place.

In our crowded, hectic world it's best to make an effort to NOT be in the way. When shopping with a cart, pull your cart to one side and stand in front or behind it if selecting or taking items from a shelf. Please don't park your cart in the middle of the aisle and stand next to it, blocking the aisle. If you happen to unwittingly do so and you see someone coming up the aisle toward you, please don't wait for them to arrive and have to wait for you, or (the worst ever!) have to ASK to get by then have to wait until it's convenient for you to move.
Allowing room for others also applies to driving. Most parking lot driveways have enough room to allow one line of cars to enter, one line to exit turning left and one line to exit turning right. Please don't sit between the two exit lanes forcing others to wait for you, especially if you are waiting to turn left -Pick a lane!
On a related note, making a right turn(?) pull all the way to the right! Unless there are bicyclists present, please make right turns from the parking lane. Do not straddle the farthest right and right lane forcing others to wait for the right before they can make a right turn and don't slow traffic in the right driving lane just because you're turning around a corner or into a driveway.

I was taught to remove any hat/cap when indoors - I don't often wear one, but when I do, I take it off before I even go through the door and don't put it back on until I'm again outside.

In addition to number 1: Don't bring your kids with you. The exact same rules that apply to dogs, apply to kids... and no one wants to listen to your screaming child.

Exactly, but some people don’t have anyone to leave their kids with.
So we either don’t invite those poor parents or deal with their screaming child.

That's funny because I think kids are the perfect excuse to avoid invites to events you don't want to go to. 😂

Please don’t park at a gas pump and go inside the store to do your shopping! Others need gas too.

i'm appalled by how many people are on their phones in public places. you hear someone talking loudly, everywhere you go. there are even those who unload their groceries and pay for them, all while chatting with someone else. the very most disgusting i have heard, was in a public restroom. i was forced to listen while a girl engaged in a fight with her boyfriend, while actually using the toilet ! how repulsive !

my pet peeve is people having screaming matches on their cell phone in a public store, especially a grocery store, pharmacy, etc. I have heard people yelling and cursing from several aisles away, like they are putting on a play...line up some chairs...

I just flush my toilet over and over and over again. And I go to the stall next to them and do it. 😂
