  • Featured is the round 5 blitz game between Magnus Carlsen and Kirill Shevchenko from the 2023 Superbet Rapid & Blitz Poland (2/5). The opening is a Sicilian Defense, Accelerated Dragon, with Carlsen opting for 7. Nb3 instead of the more popular Bc4. White's strategy for defeating the Sicilian Dragon is maybe best understood by Bobby Fischer's quote: “Pry open the h-file, sac, sac ... mate!”. Whether facing the Sicilian Dragon or playing it, you will find useful notes for both colors in this 25-move model game, where Carlsen did not need to sacrifice anything substantial on his path to victory.

    Jerry I enjoy how you aren't super critical of the players when they're in a 5 minute blitz game. Realistically even top level players will not consistently find the top move, your analysis is fair and even handed. It keeps it real and relatable.

    Great explanation of the opening. I know the dragons, but I can appreciate you taking the time and not glossing over the REASONS for the moves and strategy for those of us that think openings are just memorized…. Things are played for a reason. Don’t play an opening if you are uncomfortable or inexperienced with the resulting middlegame!! Big mistake by many players below 1700-1800 it seems

    Lots of appreciation and thanks for all the lessons over the years.
    It's fantastic to have calm and thoughtful instruction. You could bump your channels numbers by talking faster and screaming about the rooooook, but i have a huge amount of respect that you've chosen to stay aligned with your values. I also have a huge respect for Gotham, that wasn't meant as a dig.)
    Do you have any content that drills down on strategic basics? I can't think of anyone better to explain concepts like "the square" or "philidor's position", or "opposition." I know I've seen them come up in your analyses, but I'm not sure I've seen them addressed in their own videos.
    Anyway, time to throw in the towel on this comment.

    I haven't gotten any return comments nor feedback on comments here, about how I'm beginning to understand the "middle game", but I'll keep commenting about how good these videos are. This one, at about the 9:00 minute mark, somehow clarified the "time" aspect of the game for me. Not perfectly clear of course, or I'd be pushing above 2400 (I guess), but I understood another piece of the puzzle. Thanks, Jerry (whoever you are😀), I'm learning!

    at 13:18 why is knight C4 not an option? seems like a decent move to take pressure off the black queenside by forcing the white queen off it’s tile or forcing the white bishop to sacrifice.

    What about Nc4 for black instead of Nc6?

  • @jackson32
    @jackson32 Рік тому +1

    Nb3 and Bc4 are the most challenging continuations for white. If anything, Nb3 is even better as a common recommendation is to play in such a way that black gives up his prized fianchettoed bishop in order to ruin whites pawn structure on the kingside. Practice has shown that this is really not such a good idea, as white gets the two bishops and if he can consolidate has a small advantage.

    In “sidelines”, I figured out …BR3, tho I saw no particular advantage in making that Bishop “bad” with the followup …PKN4 and so missed it.
    Similarly the counterattack beginning 16…NB6, 17. KBxN, PxB, did not seem to me to afford a “crushing”attack after 18. PB5. Why not again counterattack with 18…BxN, 19. PxP, BxRPch, 20. KxB, QB5ch with lots of possibilities…?

    These opposite-side castle Sicilians are crazy difficult to understand. Everything hinges on tempo. And a successful attack often requires a lot of sacrifice, so knowing when it's sound vs. not is super hard.
