  • This approach to drawing the figure is a loose gesture drawing approach that you can use to instictively and naturally find your own style of drawing. Drawing the figure is a great way to learn how to draw in your own style. I show you how to draw from a photo reference and how to achieve a dynamic, expressive drawing.This video shows you gesture drawing techniques so that you can comfortably draw faces and figures quickly and learn to unlock your own natural way of drawing. Thanks for watching!! :)
    P.s. - as you can see in the video, I paused the reference video and took my time to draw the figure, but if you want to, you can follow the timed poses. Here is the link:

    Wow everything I thought about gestures drawings (warm up, get through it, etc) has been a complete disservice. Slowing down and doing the drawing with you narrating your thought process already gave me a better feel for how to cont my practice and really figure out what I’m looking at to render it better. Thank you so very much! I would love to see how you approach drawing clothed subjects:)

      Thank you Deanne!! That's so awesome to hear, I really appreciate it - thanks for watching. I definitely believe gesture is a powerful drawing tool, and is often under-used. I love that you also get how it's a way to observe deeply, so true!! :) Ooh - great nudge about drawing the clothed figure, thanks, I will definitely do that! :)

      Art Skills Online no thank you! I’m so grateful! I used to do the short 30 s and work up to longer poses, but I’ve been doing the opposite for a couple days and see so much better results. They don’t teach us this stuff at my fashion school, you’re kind of left on your own to figure stuff out. A clothing video would be amazing!

    Siobhan, I’m new to your channel and revitalizing my passion for drawing. I stumbled upon you while searching on Udemy. Haven’t pulled the trigger yet because I’m trying to figure out which of the two courses is better for me. Anyway, a few things I wanted to say. First of all, I find your gestural drawing to be as honest as you are as a person. It’s refreshing to hear you say that you are not good at this or that and be okay with it. A rarity indeed. One of the questions discussed was whether or not these gestural drawings are finished pieces. I think it’s finished if you as an artist say it’s finished :) I think your drawings are beautiful and, because of the gestural nature, it makes them unique. So many people think being a great or good artist means producing hyper-realistic or technically exact work but the problem with that is you can’t tell one artist from the other. Most importantly, they lack any kind of emotional substance. All that being said, I’m really glad to have found your UA-cam channel. Your philosophy and inspiration is good for my soul.

      Hi Steven, ah this is so wonderful to hear, thank you so much for this comment! It's great that you get it, I love to hear that because it's so exciting to know that you are open to exploring a truly individual and powerful drawing approach, one that is your own mark making. I completely agree, a finished drawing is one that feels finished to you - took me a while to realize this, but once you understand that, then it means you don't have to fuss over making the drawing "look right" ; it becomes more about the expression - is what you wanted to say there in the drawing, and if so, then no more needs to be added! Thanks for this! Great reminder :) Let me know if you do sign up on Udemy, and send me a message if you have any questions, or would like feedback, I'd be delighted to talk through your work. Thanks for watching here!!

    Thank you for creating these videos. They are wonderful! I look forward to each new one. You are very talented and your drawings are so loose and expressive. There is movement and emotion to them. I have a couple questions for you

    Oops! Sorry, hit the sent button before I was finished. Anyway, my questions are:
    1. When doing your gesture drawings are you looking mainly at the subject and drawing (like a blind contour) or are you constantly looking back a forth between subject and paper?
    2. How long have you been drawing?
    3. What is your favorite drawing medium to use? Guess that’s all my questions for now. Again, thanks for producing these great videos!

      Hi Rolf! Sorry I missed this comment, and only getting to answer you now!! Thank you so much for watching, and for the great questions -
      1). i'm definitely looking more at the subject than my drawing. At least, I try to focus on looking at the subject more. If I'm drawing contour, I'm looking 80% at the subject.... and I guess with gesture it's a little less, but still predominantly focusing on that rather than the drawing. Looking back and forth between the paper makes me want to correct things, and I prefer to have the drawing be a pure "response"
      2) errr... I guess, by now I've been drawing the figure for close to 20 years... and I've been drawing in general since the beginning
      3) i definitely prefer working with compressed charcoal and large newsprint or cartridge paper. Another medium I love is ink, combined with charcoal, am planning a video for that.
      Thank you so much for this, it's great to hear from you. Hope your drawing is going great!?

    Getting the figure posed correctly on the page is 90% of the battle. Shading and rendering is just gravy. OK I happen to LOVE gravy, but you get my drift. :) Nice work!

      Thank you so much! I think your figure drawings would be awesome judging from your artwork, especially the painting, would love to see that! main thing about figure drawing is to not think so much about it being a drawing of the figure!:)

    I love you work, I am also an artist living in Tanzania East Africa, I am an engineer by profession. Can you tell me how long did it took you to reach the level that you are in now and How many hours do you practice a week.

    • @Drawing-Life
      @Drawing-Life  4 роки тому +2

      Hi Aubrey! Thanks for watching :) so interesting to hear you are living in Tanzania (i'm in South Africa!); regarding how long I've been drawing, I've been drawing the figure for many years, but it was mostly in live figure drawing sessions whenever I could get to one, so I wasn't drawing consistently over that time. When I did have access to live figure drawing classes it would be once a week. Lately I've started working from photo reference, so my drawing is way more consistent. All in all i've been drawing with a focus on the figure for over 15 years. I can't say that it takes that long to get comfortable with your own work, but it does seem that there is a fast, steep curve at the beginning and then a leveling out in terms of "skill" or technique. Hope this helps!! ? 😊

    I think gesture drawings can be finished art works. I'm not an artist, just learning to draw (even though I'm 69!). Thanks for sharing!

    Great drawings Siobhan! Is that a charcoal pencil? I have sticks of charcoal and I find that I just have too little control with them so I might have to invest in one of those pencils.

    • @Drawing-Life
      @Drawing-Life  4 роки тому

      Thanks!! Yep it's a charcoal pencil. It does offer a lot more precision and control - just like a pencil, but you can get deeper darks and a more varied line that pencil, so it's great, especially if you're drawing in a sketchbook. Sticks of charcoal can be too messy for sketchbooks i find. Thank so much for watching! :)
