    titanium is only functionally different in fountain pen nibs because the strength of the metal allows for thinner and more flexible nibs

    • @BrandonWong55
      @BrandonWong55 4 роки тому +11

      Titanium is significantly less dense than steel, almost half the density. In areospace, it's used for its strength to weight ratio. In watch making on the other hand, it's used for its lightness and corrosion resistance. I would assume that when it comes to stationery, it's used for its lightness too, and maybe to prevent galling with the internals. Now, someone may argue that you could get a light material out of a fountain pen by using aluminium, but it has a vastly different scratch resistance and isn't nearly as durable. Comparing to plastic, the properties of a metal are significantly different and inferior in most cases. Additionally, some people prefer the 'cold' feel of metal compared to resin/plastic which has different thermal conductivity and specific heat capacity. When Peter says "I don't understand why anyone would make a fountain pen out of titanium", I think he's being quite short sighted and ignoring all of these material properties, let alone the fit and finish you can get out of titanium.

      Jesse addiction is an over used word. Passion can be defined as someone liking or desire of a subject or object. And seeing as this is a hobby and a job I would argue that he is very passionate about what he does. Addiction can be defined as a physical psychological dependence on a substance that saying someone is physically dependent may mean their unwell. So Jesse before you make an argument online do your own research to validate your claim.

    I like the watch. Gives off a "Universal-World-Wide-Time-Clock" feel like, yeah it might be 5pm here but its 3am somewhere else you know. And with the 5 being around where the 3 normally is, you could imagine another 12 being where the 6 normally goes. So then the clock is a 24 hour clock. And the multiple hands on it show you the time in different locations.
    The end result gave me a David Bowie - Time Traveler feel and that was okay with me. Sorry the pen was a disappointment. On a happier note, you can now look at the pens you like with more appreciation. Its like having a week of rainy days so you can appreciate the clear sunny day even more when it comes. Thanks for being you Peter.

    The Lamy CP1 is not a titanium fountain pen, never was, many websites and reviews claim it to be but if you go to their official website there's no mention of this material in the specs. The converter used is also mentioned, there are 2 of them being the Z 27 for the CP 1, the Z 28 (with the red end is for the Safaris). The grip section , yes its cheap plastic but sturdy, not for everyone. If you love timeless minimalistic design this one's exceptional, but if you want writing comfort try another pen. .......beauty is in the eye of the beholder....
    CP stands for cylindrical pen number 1, from the same designer of the iconic Lamy 2000.

    "guy gets scammed and continues to complain about it for the entire video"
    I don't think lamy ever claimed this had any titanium in it, nor have I seen it sold as "titanium"
    I've had one of these for about 6 years now, and it's still going strong.
    I use the black PVD EF nib, despite being left handed I think this works much better than the LH nib.

    Thank you for this video, Peter. I've noticed in many areas, not just pens, "titanium" claims are all the rage, especially in Chinese-made stuff. Someone figured out Americans (myself included) go nuts for anything that is made of titanium. Sadly, a huge number of products are either barely made with titanium or are outright fraudulent in their product postings. I've seen this with lots of handheld products (pens, pocket knives, flashlights, etc.). Also, Amazon product postings seem to be getting generally less reliable, with vendors posting stuff that's not what's described and overpriced. I recently found some fountain pens by other manufacturers being sold much higher on Amazon than if you went to a specialty pen sales site. To make matters worse, there seem to be a lot of Chinese knockoff products in this area, though so far on Amazon I see those as clearly branded Jin Hao or some such and not actually counterfeiting the original brand name. Yet.

    Great throughout review 👏, and the drawing does reflect your review also.
    I was thinking of purchasing this exact pen (no titanium) to replace my backup pen "Lamy 2000". The "Lamy 2000" was my daily driver for 4 years, and it at the 4th year it developed this weird tiny leakage at the retainier clip when written which I couldn't fix and totally annoying. So the "Lamy 2000" then became the backup to the new daily driver the "Dialog 3" which I totally 💘.
    Anyway, after saw this fine review I concluded that this pen is perfectly fit as a BACKUP pen, or a pen that I wouldn't mind lending to someone to use instead of the "Dialog 3" 🙄 .

    I'm currently sitting at home with a broken leg. Surgeons had to screw in several titanium rods into my femur to reattach the bone to the joint and they inserted a rod inside the full length of my femur. When I'm dead I want someone to take the titanium rods and make some pens out of them. You're welcome.

    Hit the hammer on the nail with the “fine line between looking minimalist and boring”. Got mine on Amazon and as soon as I took it out of the box my first impression was that it felt sooo cheap. When I tap on it with my fingernail, it sounds like aluminum (though might be something else), but when I buy a product I expect the designers to make the end result presentable, regardless of the material used. It looks like a typical disposable plastic pen. The feel is slightly different from plastic but on the same level of cheapness. Although there can be plastic that can feel premium. I would have probably kept it if it was like $20 but for almost $50, it’s going back. The least they could have done was include a converter. Mine didn’t even come with a cartridge (which was advertised). I was expecting something that had Quality in the feel and materials, to reflect the price tag. The holes around the top also contributed to the cheap feel. I mean it’s an ok looking pen, just feels massively overpriced.
    I wanted an upgrade from Black Forest, but instead I got a downgrade with this featherweight. Black Forest weighs just right and feels unmistakably metal. I might get the “carbon fiber” version, but I wanted to try another brand. I guess I’ll try another Lamy because I couldn’t return z28 converter that I bought with it. Z28 isn’t compatible by the way, couldn’t find info and after searching and searching, some website said that it was compatible. But it doesn’t fit because it has two protruding spikes on the sides.

    Was it bought from Amazon or the lamy page itself? Because the lamy writing on the lid of the pen didn't seem like the original slightly tilted logo of the brand which I always saw on every lamy pen until now but I only ever swa the generic ones for school writing and stuff
    I just thought that it was weird to see lamy written in that way on the pen.. So maybe it's a fake? That would also explain why the converters didn't work with it that worked with the other ones?

  • @ArtistWizardry
    @ArtistWizardry 4 роки тому

    For modern pens I've never gotten into ..I guess European made pens....except Rotring but that's Japanese now. All of mine are from Asia. PENBBS is probably my favorite maker.
    I think it's completely ridiculous to have to order a converter separately, especially for that price point. Just make it international size. idk, I just have never been impressed with the styles offered.
    My delimma now, with the beautiful and colorful acrylic bodies available, is matching the right ink with the pen color. Then I found Kiwi Ink company! They do custom ink color matching as well as create TreColori that has all the things!! Inks with your choice sheen, shimmer, and ink color. They'll make combinations to your liking. Ordered a few. Haha, no I think there have been a couple others I have been disappointed with. As a whole though, pens do usually bring me joy so you’re right, they are positive reviews most of the time.

    Whoa, your drawing today reminds me of the mtg guru lands painted by Terese Nielsen who is one of my favorite artists. Idk of you've seen her art but you'd dig it.

    peter: that's one of the squared-off lamy nibs, which means it has a sweet spot!
    if the pen stops working, try looking closely at the nib and seeing if you're rotating it while drawing, and rotate it back so the whole side of the square is touching the paper.

    • @AlexiLaiho227
      @AlexiLaiho227 4 роки тому

      i know this because i have a lamy 2000 and it also has a squared off nib
      PS lamy 2000's are amazing in person, they're really a pleasure to use (once you figure out how to hold the pen straight)
      ball-tip nibs are kinda like training wheels when compared to squared-off nibs. it's a bit harder to use consistently but it provides a bit more character in your writing. it's like a stub/italic nib, except without the rough edges.

    Received CP1 yesterday, not tested yet as I'm waiting for my ink (but I have the suitable convert haha), watched Peter's video today. Anxiety increases! (ho and as I understood it's a mix of brass and plastic pen)

      I got one a short while back, because I liked how a safari writes, but hated the grip. I love my CP1, it writes well and it feels great (I do have small hands though, so i prefer thinner pens in general). To be fair, I never used lamy ink in it, so maybe that was the issue in this video.

    Peter has fallen completely into the rabbit hole. Hey David Parker (Figboot On Pens) did a review of one of your all time favs, Peter....the Muji Aluminum. He’s gave it a glowing review as well.

    lamy has two converters the black one that works for all lamy pens and the red one thats just for the safaris and al-star line.
    The CP1 is pretty minimal/ boring but people like it because of how slim it is also its grip is round unlike the triangle grip in the safaris and al-stars that some people complain about and its more "professional" looking. All in all its nothing ground breaking they all use the same swappable nibs and its not inherently better than the al-star but its an alternative design (albeit at a higher cost) that some people will prefer and others wont.

    Great review. . ."Why make a pen out of titanium only to paint it so you cannot see or feel it." That is one should be obvious but brilliant question!

    Titanium is very lightweight for its strength, hence why it is also used on many high-end folding knife scales. The lacquer is aesthetically pleasing to me and many others. This sort of thing is really very subjective, so to each their own. Hope this was helpful.

    I have one of these, it’s my second one but I was surprised that it isn’t as strong as it is suppose to be. I’ve been carrying one for two years now and one days I noticed a very substantial indent on the barrel of the pen. Bare in mind it was in a pen sheath and in a safe space in my bag. So I was kinda disappointed aswell

    Sorry you didn't like it! However, I bought this pen from Goulet pens and it came with a z27 converter. It writes pretty smooth and I love it. Of course I don't use it to draw, however I should try that and see if it doesn't meet the Peter standards!! Thanks for the review!!

    • @peter_draws
      @peter_draws  4 роки тому

      Yes! That’s the kind of converter it needs and including that would have made a huge difference.

    Come on, Peter. Titanium is lighter and it more easily adopts skin temperature than steel. There is more to the material than simply strength. By the way, I love the blue drawing.

    • @peter_draws
      @peter_draws  4 роки тому

      Those could be good points, and are partly why I wanted to get another titanium pen to do more research. I will say that the only “real” titanium pen I have (the Ti2 I reviewed recently) didn’t feel notably lighter, in fact it felt heavier than most of my other pens. In the pen world there’s not a benefit in titanium being lighter than steel because you don’t need to make pens out of steel either. Also I have never ever had a problem with the temperature of my pens.
