    This video shows a beekeeper inspecting a custom build fridge hive. This hive was made a few years ago from an old fridge in the style of a top bar beehive.

    A calm hive is always nice. I've had a few that are real stinkers.

    I've been looking at building a layens hive with thick walls for our colder UT, USA winters. I think I'll now be using a fridge or freezer for the outside box. Thanks for sharing!

    You could run the freezer part as a resource nuc for the main hive :) I'm from Slovenia where 80-90% of beekeepers use those hives that can be mounted on trucks and are accessed from behind (called AŽ hive). The major flaw of these is the fact that you cannot expand their size. This means that you need to be very dilligent and anticipate swarming season and flows very well to maximize your populations without them swarming on you. You can get them in different sizes (from double deep equivalent to about 4 deep eqivalent - the most popular here are the classic double deep equivalent and the modern version which adds 3 more frames per deep equivalent to the classic). The main advantage of them is their standardized size which makes them ideal for stacking. You design your structure (either a static building, a trailer or a whole truck) in a way where you then just insert hives into the openings. This way a small truck (around 10t-15t capacity) can carry around 80 hives. This can be as a permanent structure on the truck and you leave the truck with your bees or a unit with legs that gets detached on location to free up the truck to carry another one or to bring in extraction equipment box when the time comes.

      So put the fridge upside down on its head, using the smaller freezer box as the brood box and the larger fridge box for honey!!!! You'd drill a hole between them of course w queen excluder...

    I love your videos. I think that Fridge Hives could be the best hives here in Iceland :)

    Great to see a new video. I've thought about getting a hive. Just something to tinker with. Been seeing a few bees fly around trying to find a spot to swarm. Hope you're doing well.

    Hello it is always a blast to watch your videos also I have learned what to do and also learned what NOT to do . HaHa . On your wax dipping tank do you know what size it is and how many gallon it is and maybe if you remember about how many pounds of wax it took to to get it started. I can convert it from your numbers to ours here in the USA . As always thanks for all your informative information. All jokes a side I think you both are helping out a lot of new Bee keepers.ya we are just coming out of winter here in NORTH CAROLINA, USA . Thanks

    Did you say queens can't fly? How do bees swarm then with a new queen? Doesn't a new queen who swarms fly away and take bees with her? Thank you for the content sir. Always entertaining

    • @Darthcardel
      @Darthcardel 2 роки тому

      New queens fly when young, but once they start to lay young they no longer fly.

    • @danielsear9687
      @danielsear9687 Рік тому

      When a hive is ready to swarm, the original queen leaves with about half of the hive. The queen leaves behind a hive full of queen cells that about to hatch out when the hive swarms. The virgin queens stay with the original hive. The original queen stops laying and then her abdomen shrinks and the queen losses weight and then can fly. New virgin queens can fly. She will do several mating flights. When she returns to the hive for the final time, her abdomen will swell and she will no longer be able to fly until she in turns swarms later.
