  • Meet my dream truck, an OBS 1997 Ford F-350 with the 7.3 Powerstroke. The last year of the Powerstroke and an F-350 with the solid axle front end, I knew I couldn't pass this truck up when I found it! I figured I'd give a little walk around tour of this all original truck, with only 94k miles on it! I've also done a few modifications to make it my own while still sticking to the classic lines and look of the truck. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll answer or make a new video to address them!

    Beautiful truck. I have a ‘95 F150 XLT 4x4 short box, same color. I love it. I put 33”x 10.5” BFG KO2s on the chrome steel factory rims, regeared it to 4:56, front leveling kit, air shocks in back. It is so much fun to drive. Really good in the sand, I took it up to the “Top of the World” in Sand Hollow state park without any trouble (did not have to call Matt to get me out 😃). I bought the truck slightly used in October 1995.

    Nice. I'd suggest at a minimum replacing the factory airbox so you can hear that turbo and get better protection from dusting the compressor wheel. Check out the 6637 filter for that. After that, depends how deep your pockets are - injectors, HPOP, intercooler, electric fuel pump, etc... sky's the limit.

    some suggestions, take the side molding off (black bar things that are misaligned) since if any water gets trapped underneath it will rust it over, and take off that tuner, tuners on stock injectors and cooling systems are just gonna fuck you over in the long run, sure its fun to have a snappy pedal but paying for new pistons isnt worth it, the 7.3 isnt meant to be a power beast and lots of the 500k+ mile psd's come from stock-ish motors (no tuners and maybe new STOCK injectors)
    things you should do to your truck if you want power:
    1. intercooler, great start and prevents overheating
    2. new set of injectors, if you want power get baby swamps, dont go much higher than that with a stock turbo since its overkill
    3. new gear set, i run 4.11 and it gives me plenty of pep, MPG took a hit though.
    things you should do to increase longevity:
    1. have a spare gpcr on hand in case of a no-start
    2. buy a tank heater
    3. get the ball joints done now before you start cupping your tires (stock balljoints only last 60-100k miles on avg)
    4. GET YOUR WATER PUMP REPLACED!! this problem is remarkably common and so many dont know about it, its a silent killer and since the 7.3 is so loud it masks any noises created by a failing water pump.
    5. just open your hood now and then, check for any blow by and make sure your engine isnt leaking oil anywhere.
    My trucks a 95 f-250 PSD and just crested 287k, ball joints are shot again and ill have to replace them, injectors are baby swamps with a quadzilla arachnid tuner (tuned for towing and fuel eco), 4.11 gearing, intercooled and block overbore .020
    the biggest mistake i made was running an aggressive tune on stock injectors, was running a hot tune in the mud and snapped a conrod, when i dissected the engine the pistons all had aggressive burning with #3 having a hole straight through it, some scoring of the cylinder and a failing HPOP, all from the tuner (and my stupidity)
    long story short the 7.3 is reliable stock and with light modification. don't be stupid like i was and think "nothing can break its a 7.3, its indestructible" because thats when shit breaks and its not cheap to fix it either.

    • @JustDiesels
      @JustDiesels  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks for all the solid info! I didn’t really mention it in the video, but the water pump was the first thing I did on this truck. Replaced with an OEM ford pump. Trim is going to come off too. It’s looks horrible! I’m pretty sure I’ll be okay on these tunes too. I don’t hot rod the truck, and ive noticed much lower ETGs since I put it on. I appreciate the cautionary words though!

    • @stalinsbitch7428
      @stalinsbitch7428 4 роки тому +1

      Just Diesels no problem man, but I have to disagree on the tuner part, I’ve torn down several tuned 7.3 and a vast majority have light burning all the way to holes in nearly every piston. These trucks even with low mileage doesn’t change the fact they’re always gonna be old. Things will break easier and more often than they did from factory, I’d suggest saving yourself a headache and take that tuner off for the time being and go with a higher gear ratio if you need more pep for towing, bigger injectors and an intercooler if you really need power. Sure it’s low mileage but the odometer only goes up from here.
      If you’re wondering why I’m so anti-tuner it’s because I’ve owned a shop for 6 years now and I see people coming in at least once a month complaining about dropping cylinders, lo and behold I check compression and always ask the same question “did you put a hot tune on stock internals and injectors” every time it’s a yes. And it’s an expensive bill I give them but that doesn’t change the fact that they’re absolute bitches to repair (especially the obs’) since you have to take off the grill and the hood along with pulling the whole engine out if the cylinders are fucked. It’s an absolute nightmare working on fords. Especially older ones because you can only bandage a wound to a certain extent before it becomes cheaper to buy a whole new engine. Usually the problems are little and easily ignoreable, easy checks to do
      1. Watch fuel pressure at WOT, if it’s not that different from when you are cruising prepare for busted injectors within ~5k miles if you’re lucky
      2. Or if your fuel pressure drops below 45 at idle your injector o rings are shot, cheap n easy fix
      3. Listen for some wub/wobble noise from the drivers side engine bay, if you hear it and it happens only at ~1200 rpm sell the truck to some other poor guy and let them deal with it. For me it’s almost exclusively been floating valves, valve spring wears and it’ll start floating, owner will think it’s normal and 2 days later total engine failure happens, had two different 10th gen 7.3s roll into the shop with almost identical stories.
      Have fun with your truck either way man, I can’t make you do anything but head my warning, that motors pretty damn reliable but when it breaks, your wallet won’t be that happy!

    Love this truck down from lights to mirrors. I owned a green 94.5 Ford f250 that had the bullet hole wheels. The motor came out of a 99 f550 wrecktruck back in 02. I knew the truck and bought it in 2017. 5 speed. Desired truck. I always wanted a red or green obs. I painted frame, new bumpers, batteries, wheel cylinders, brakes drums, rotors, tires, bought fenders, new front rear tank, brake lines, new bed, all new filters, rebuilt injectors, about 5k in upgrades turned out being the biggest pos! Piece of shit. Everytime other time i got in it something happened to it. From the tps, ivs, to ebrake failing after spending 700$ to rebuilt all that stuff. And a 400$ throttle pedal. Then progressed to it plup out just quit running with only 166 k on the truck. I looked at several lot nicer with 300k for 7000$. I give 3500$ for this hunk of shit. I sold and recooped 2/3 of my money. And only got 2500 miles out of it. Good trucks but good trucks 10 years ago. Most are ragged now. I got that hunk of shit running and sent her down the road. The problem now is ones with piles of miles get ready for expensive engine or transmission or clutches or injector job. If its low mile that baby sit so prepare for sensor sticking or not working. It's a funny feeling going down the road and boom your throttle quits working.
