These engines will reach close to a million miles with very good maintenance, the 6th digit on the odometer will not go past 3, so when it reaches 399999 it will just go to 300000. It is like this on all OBS fords
TechDroid Today well as of 20 years of being very involved with all ford diesel trucks from the idi 6.9 to the current 6.7 Powerstroke I myself, nor any other tech, service advisor, manger or engine builder I have ever met none of us as ever seen a 1 million mile international 7.3l diesel. Also every person that sells these trucks acts like the motor will make that mileage no problem and it’s simply not true but if you no of one that went 1 million miles that was never rebuilt or had any major repair I would love to hear about it. And the 99-03 trucks have a analog odometer which doesn’t reset. Still never see one with 1 million miles thanks for watching
@@notchback93 there are a couple of videos on youtube that have over 1,000,000 miles and still going.
Shaun Bennett so I searched and found one video with the ole timer saying he has 1.3 million miles but no others. I did see a video with Powerstroke help.com shop truck spot that had 910,000 on it but it had a camshaft that failed @ 750k and was repaired with parts from other engines, so I will stand by my comments that I nor anyone I’ve meet in the business as ever seen a million mile ford 7.3l in person or ever new anyone who has, not to say it doesn’t happen or exist there’s always exceptions to the rule, my issue is every person selling a 7.3l Powerstroke acts like they all will hit a million miles no problem and unfortunately people buy into that myth and find out that it’s not the truth. They fail all the time for a number of reasons, case in point my late 99 with 160k miles had a block fail due to coolant cavitation I was the second owner and it was a total shock but it happened nonetheless
@@notchback93 you're right, I've never personally seen one either but it has happened, and engines do let go for no apparent reason. And I also completly agree to try and find a completly stock truck when buying, my truck had a hacked up exhaust but other than that it was stock, never chipped or tuned. It's now been transformed into a totally different machine.
My Dad's 7.3 (bought new in '99) has 582k on it with the original engine. My mechanics main shop-truck (also a 7.3) has 921k. Just because you haven't seen any doesn't mean they don't exist. Your 400k number would probably be a good number to shoot for, but it's, by no means, the ceiling. Anyway, good video, and that's a nice truck you have there.
This video was so helpful. Thank you for making it. Surprisingly hard to find this info around.
Thanks for the info. Great video I’ve been looking for a 7.3 F350 96 crew cab for quite a while now and thanks to you now I know what to look for.
That white truck is so beautiful!!
Thank you for the video, much better than someone only focusing on the pros and never mentioning the cons. Im buying one today and hoping it lasts a long time.
really informative even for me as a guy who has never owned a diesel. just took some notes and going to look at a clean all black 96 f250 with 186k miles.. here in Montana where rust isn't much of an issue..
Can’t wait I’ll be getting my hands on a 1996 F-250 4x4 7.3 with 180k miles came up from Texas to Pittsburgh not one ounce of rust can be found anywhere on it thing looks like it cam off the showroom floor I have a 1995 F-250 with the 351 Windsor in it but parking it on limestone driveway it’s past 5 yrs of life killed it that truck was a beast loved it
Ok this is my first time watching you...I was searching around for OBS vids. Saw that beautiful 350 in the thumbnail so I had to check it out. Good intro ok I’m interested. Huge shop nice lift ok this guy is legit I’m listening now. Boom outta nowhere this pissed ass thrash song comes on...subscribed immediately.
just sold my jeep now in the market for an obs 7.3. great info thanks for the video!!
Thank you for this video getting ideas on purchasing a 7.3l
I bought 1995 F-350 dually about 5 months ago. Got a fifth wheel. 105gal aux tank, air bags to tow my 3 car carrier trailer. I also have a 2006 Silverado LBZ but found that this Ford is much cheaper to run than my Chevy. Maintenance is cheaper, little better gas milage and gets looks everywhere. Maybe not as powerful as my Chevy but i am not racing and it gets the job done. Very impressive trucks for their time and timeless look.
All the OBS Fords I've owned needed the oil and trans pans replaced due to rusting through, I also live in the Midwest. If I remember right, to do the oil pan you have to take out the motor mount bolts and lift the engine out just slightly. Other than that they were pretty solid.
Dan J very common issues where I live in New England also brake, transmission and steering lines rusty out
Looks like you got your chassis coated in fluid film too! Smart man! Great video!
I use this stuff called ACF 50 if you want check it out I prefer it over traditional Fluid Film but either Is ok
Great video keep them coming
Thanks for this video, it will be nice to look back on when I run into issues with my 7.3
Stay tuned I am hoping to have the second part to this video coming the first week of April, I will do a walk around on my 94 f150 work truck
Great video. Nice truck
Great video! Best I’ve seen on these OSB’s. I’m looking at getting one pretty soon and this was very helpful. Is the part 2 video available?
So plot twist I sold the 94 150 showed in the beginning of this video about 3 months ago actually, the dodge diesel has replaced it as my work truck/plow truck but I intend to do a update on this obs video to answer more questions and give some insight to how to purchase one of these trucks and hopefully not get ripped off!! Thanks for watching and throwing out the comment
Great video! Good truck!
Awesome video thank you
My heart rate rises WHENEVER I see one of these on the road and I want one SO bad. Unfortunately, like everything I ever fall in love with, everyone else quickly follows and becomes an unrealistic reality for me.
Hey man, great video!!! Have you ever replaced a 7.3 oil pan with the engine in the frame? This truck is beautiful, and yes the prices are getting higher and higher
frame wise. I do use oil base paint to keep it nice. You can see some spots that are rough but safe.
Found a garage kept plow truck 32,000 miles. 7.3 zf5. Standard cab. Tailgate is GONE...everything else is fine. Hopefully picking it up today.
Great video bud , helped out a lot
Awesome! I wanted to help others from not being aware of what to look for on these trucks! Glad I could help
@@notchback93 I’m a gas engine guy and currently looking into buying a 97 F250 with the power stroke , your video was hands down the best I’ve found . Thanks again
Good vid good info
Nice shape I'm from New England also when these were new were everywhere! But all construction/plowing esp plowing ended most around here . Sad best looking and all the colors you could get them with , 2 tone's, first heavy duty with awesome rims, XLT was pretty equipped. New a guy who owned a 95' 7.3 Tow truck new drove it to 350k miles all other trucks had issues not this truck and she had multiple drivers over the years , finally a dumb driver rushing to call went straight into a tree ! Everyone was heart broken.
I have a 95' powersmoke just like the pied beige on beige but exactly opposite. It does ride like an old work truck/tank
the moment i see the cab mounts rotted i never buy it your 100% correct about it i took pictures to a rust guy i know wouldn't even bother
Over here in Michigan I own a salvage yard and ever Ford OBS truck I get has all the rust he is mentioning so that all checks out. 🤟 highest mile truck I’ve had drive across my scale was around 390k. Nothing ever higher than that.
I’ve always wanted to work In a salvage yard, I’d end up taking too many projects home.
@@notchback93 that’s how my grandpa and dad are. They can be pack rats at times. I’m the polar opposite. I get rid of the stuff as soon as it comes in. One of my favorite finds is a set of rear bumpers for an OBS Ford brand new the package from ‘85.
USA Made 🇺🇸 plus some Snap-On tools here and there
Any good place or websites that sell these trucks consistently? I like the Super and regular cabs with the 5speed manual.
When my 97 rolls over 400k in another 2k miles, I'll let you know, works all week, sometimes tows a 14k lb dump trailer, and plays on the weekends. Runs around town when i have errands. I got it for a steal because of mis-matched bed color and cracked core support, other than that it's a solid truck. I did a 6637 filter as the only mod as i'm getting it caught up on maintenance. Would like to do exhaust on it to help it breath better, but other than that, no other plans. Oh I have a chip too because the factory shifts are heck on the E4OD clutches. It doesn't really need more power for what I do with it.
I have a 95 f150 I am working on had it since 2000
I had a 2 tone 94 f150
It was a great truck I wish I didn’t sell it but oh well, enjoy your truck
At 400,000 miles on the OBS 7.3 the odometer will roll back to 300,000. Mine was purchased at 317,000 and right now in my driveway it’s at 308,000. It’s a defect with them. No OBS 7.3 will show past 400,000
When your looking if the seller will let you pull the passenger kick pannel off and pull the carpet up most the ones I see are rusted out right there and you can’t see it from the bottom
having trouble finding an obs that’s in good shape thanks for the tips, what would be a good price point do you think for buying obs fords on craigslist I can’t seem to gauge if a post is too expensive or not
Anything under 12k that’s not a complete piece is worth looking at if it’s a powerstroke diesel
The Cat likes it.
Turn down the loud obnoxious music and turn up your quiet voice. I don’t like going deaf every time the video plays music again because I have to turn the volume up all the way to hear what you’re saying.
Do you have any idea why my 96 F350 7.3 Powerstroke is jumping out of overdrive? I have always been good about having clean transmission fluid. I have 324,000 miles on the engine and it runs perfect.. Just recently I noticed the transmission is acting up. While driving it jumps into a lower gear. Thanks for your help.
It could be a electrical issue with the switch on the shifter however without driving it and feeling what it’s doing it’s hard to give a accurate diagnosis
Lol funny you say cam sensor in the glove box bought my dads 97 with 217,000 miles and saw he kept one in the center console. Yeah I’m modding it but only bolt ons and rust repairs.
Wish you could've seen the rust bucket I just looked at. You would've beaten the guy bloody. Tried to tell me the rust was cosmetic as I flicked chunks off the frame.
With the automatic, should you put it neutral, or park to switch 4x4?
So with this truck you have lock the hubs on the outside, then to shift to 4x4 you can put in 4x4 high while in park neutral or moving under 15 mph but for 4x4 low it has to be engine running and transmission in neutral.
Where in New England are you? I’m 20 mins NW of Boston. I got a ‘97 two tone with 276K on it that’s relatively clean a couple months ago so far have done some work to it. As of now the radiator support needs to be replaced, water pump, rear leaf springs and probably some other things eventually
I’m in central area of Connecticut not to far from Hartford, I actually bought my white obs from near Boston couple years ago
@@notchback93 that’s not far at all, I wish you were closer I’d take mine to you for sure
@@lerg12 I really appreciate that I done a lot of those repairs on these trucks but I’m sure if you want you could do those things yourself, If I can do it ! You can do it! If there’s any advice I can give you or questions you have just ask
@@notchback93 absolutely, I did do the driver’s side Glowplugs myself, starter, starter battery lug, and a power steering hose. But when it comes to things like the water pump or whatever I still don’t feel too confident yet lol
@@lerg12 I suggest to do the water pump when you do the radiator support If you can do them together it will be very easy with nothing in the way also buy a Ford original used support that also came off a diesel the gas ones don’t fit due to the inter cooler, I’ve seen some aftermarket replacement supports that are made for the diesels but I’d be worried about everything lining up afterwards
Can I buy this truck in this video?
I need a new bed! Mine has rusted true. Any ideas?
Idk give me more details about the condition of the truck as a whole and your availability on 💸💸💸 then I can better advise
This engine produces 250 hp and 505 lb⋅ft of torque in automatic transmission trucks from the last years of production, and 275 hp and 525 lb⋅ft of torque in manual transmission trucks.
I found a 94 ext cab gasoline F250 in The Netherlands (where I live) with like 156k miles. Would that still be a good one? It looks in like mint condition besides a few dents.
As long as it’s not rusted and it seems to be maintained it’s probably a good truck just make sure the underneath of the truck is in good shape, check the door seams, radiator support, lower front fenders and rear wheel arches look for bubbles or signs of bodywork
Thank you will contact the seller to check it out. Thank you for the checking points what to look for!
@@notchback93 me too! Will let you know how it is. Going next friday to check it out.
Is there a good place to find one fords for sale consistently and decent shape?
They really can be found everywhere, but depending on where you are located you may have to travel, if money is of no concern try eBay or bring a trailer.com, but you can just as easy find one near you but you have to look online every day and be ready to buy if the right one comes along I found mine a hour away from my location and paid less than 10k because when it went for sale I was ready to go and buy, now you can’t even buy a clean ford obs gas truck for that price. There’s one on eBay right now in California it’s the same truck except it’s stick shift. Bids are at 15k there’s 5 days left of auction I think it will get to 22k but we will have to see
What tires are on the white truck?
In this video they were 16.5 inch rims that are 12.50 wide with roughly a -44 offset, now I’m currently running a 22x12.50 with the same offset. The brand of the tires on 16.5 are intercro vortrac
is it lifted? also whats the exact wheel and tire specs?
It’s definitely a couple inches over stock height but it doesn’t have a specific lift kit installed and those were 16.5 military style wheels tires were 35x12.50r16.5 offset maybe a -44 but I’m not a 100% on that but now it has 22x12.50 forged wheels if you are interested let me know maybe I’ll do a video on the current setup
1997 F-150 went to next gen. F250 and F350 stayed until 1998 when Super Duty came out
Actually the 98 model only had a f250 it was the style of the new f150 it had 7 lug axles it was a odd ball for the one model year and then they went to the superduty style
sometimes i wonder if it’s a good idea to get one. they’re not going for less than like 8k and they’re all abused work trucks.
You don’t have to tell me brother 99% of these around are clapped out trucks that everyone thinks is worth a million dollars 💵 also everyone thinks because it’s a 7.3 Powerstroke it’s gonna run a million miles which is far from the truth
@@notchback93 yeah. basically, I got a BMW e36 because I'm in love with the chassis and also know they're becoming rarer and it's an asset. I want my daily driver to be an asset as well, and I'm in love with the OBS chassis as well. I'm just afraid that I'm a bit too late to the game, and that I've missed the ideal window to get one of these trucks. They're great vehicles, but they're still a rough ride, and all the ones I can find are beat to high hell. You'll get 300k mile 7.3s for 9 grand, and that's pretty ridiculous, so I might have to go another path.
Also, about your million mile thing--These odometers roll over from 399,999 back to 300. I've talked to ranchers with 500-700k on theirs, but that's obviously an extreme, as well as the fact that the trans has probably been rebuilt three times, and the engine at least once.
@@MCatwar you hit the nail on the head they ride like a cinder block I hate to admit that the 2nd gen dodge rides like a cloud compared to any obs with stock suspension

Hunter Jordan the rims are 16.5 I’m not sure of the exact tire size but I believe they are around 35 inch
ive only seen two 7.3s with over 500k , one has 504k but its just rotted to nothing and a plow truck that had 650k but is rotted to nothing
My bumper has a larger gap because me and this pole decided we should be friends
They can’t go to a million because the odometer rolls back my 7.5 did that already
Ford has build many many in house diesels i can think of 3 off the too of my head not includeding the 6.7
I don’t believe you are correct I worked for a Ford dealer from 2000-2017 and the 6.7 is the only Ford engineered diesel all f-series from 250-550 had internationals engine and some bigger f750- and medium size trucks had either Cummins or Cat diesels that’s why my international tow truck has the same engine has my obs in this video, minor changes have been made to use Ford accessories and sensors but the engine is a international and the 6.9 IDI the 7.3 IDI the 7.3 IDI turbo and the power stroke are all international engines

Ford should have been building their own motors for f series as they have build some very good diesels in the past.
I think it was a decision based on scale international could supply the amount of diesels necessary at a lower cost then tooling up for what may in thier view been a fad for diesel pickups.
They didn't make a 1998 model your truck might of been put together in 1998
Seeing a lot now with 220k miles for $30-40k......ouch
Yeah but they aren’t selling for that, it’s like that with the turbo Buicks, mustangs and certain year Camaro also, people figure they can ask the sun moon and the stars these days for certain vehicles. Don’t shop on eBay or bring a trailer best place is honestly local listings that’s where I found my OBS, it was 60 miles away!

Obs is from 87-97
I don’t consider the the brick nose style 87-91 to be a true obs just my opinion the general public expect to see the 92-97 front end when you call it a obs but that’s just my opinion
@@notchback93 the only difference is the grilles. The body style of the square body's ended in 86 so that brought the obs. @@notchback93 not dissecting, just stated a fact. Wasn't looking to ruffle any feathers. Have a good one.
Why do they call them obs
It just stands for old body style that term has been applied to ford trucks and Chevy trucks from the mid nineties

It’s gets a lot of attention but yeah it’s just a truck. My Buick Grand National and my 83 square body don’t get near the looks, waves or compliments that the obs does. Still it’s just a truck

Good video. I have a Nevada 97 F-250 7.3 Heavy Duty trailer special I bought in January 1998 with only 121K miles, no rust, one owner. This truck has been the best vehicle i've ever owned. Used only for trailer towing. Original everything, no mods, original brakes. Only in garage for regular maintenance since 1998. The only bad issue is the turbo boost flapper valve. It is lazy and slow in the winter starting. Sometimes throws a back pressure code. I have another OBS 1996 F-150, same cab as diesel only 5.8 motor. This is my desert beater 4X4 with 250K miles. 5.8 runs great , but as all old vehicles has oil pan leak and rear seal issue.Replaced front end ball joints and power steering pump this year. Plan on replacing or rebuilding the Windsor. Simple heavy machines that last when taken care of. My kids will get these trucks as I'm in my late 70's.
