It boggles me that this tutorial got a mere 390 likes in two years. It's one of the best, if not the best, tutorial I've seen on the subject.
Perhaps renaming it to make textured walls to smooth walls would make it show up first! The video is useful, funny, and super encouraging for beginners like me. Bravo
you gave me so much confidence Tank you
I've been watching UA-cam videos on skim coating for a while now, and like your instructions the best. Thank you!
I’m so freaking nervous, but I want to do it and you’ve given me the confidence. Thanks Spencer.
This was probably the best tutorial I’ve ever seen on this.
Thanks Spencer "awesome delivery", definitely the calmness in your voice and the comedy kept my attention. The professionalism and presentation was just a bonus. By the way, just like you motivate so many of us not to give up on "Skim Coating" ..... you should give the comedy a second shot :-).
This is the funniest video I’ve seen in a while. Well done. I am entertained.. “Hey Spencer how you doing… I got this wall”
Thank you! Thank you! A million times thank you. Finally getting the confidence to do it. Great video. You are the best.😊
Pleased to report I finished my first skim coating project, after finding a bit of confidence from watching your video.
I had done one coat over a pretty aggressive texture and it did not look good. But when I heard you say that the first coat will probably be that way that was the boost I needed.
I didn't expect to get it in the first go, mind you, but many other channels don't show the first coat over a rough texture.
Now on to the next one!
Mr. Colgan, thank you very much for the detailed explanation, its very helpful
New one coming out today !!!
Such a reassuring gent. Love your calm approach to sharing your knowledge. Subscribed.
I saw this for the first time last night and it gave me a light bulb moment. Using a spray water bottle was a game changer. I had been really struggling with skim coating. If I made the mud to thin it fell off the wall. If it was too thick I couldn't spread it properly. Thank you so much for this information.
I enjoy your videos so much, I thought I was watching Christopher Walken explain this you sound just like him with your intonation and vocabulary it’s great!
Thanks for being so reassuring.
excellent tutorial! i love your enthusiasm, you voice kind of remind me of an upbeat Christopher Walkin. i could listen to your videos all day. great job.
good job i took a great benefit from this video
Excellent teacher, thank you so much
THANK YOU! Best instructions and encouragement that I have seen. I thought I was supposed to do it one coat and tried and failed miserably. I got tired of trying after only a small area and stopped. I think I can fix my wrong and feel better about getting it done. Doing this over Venetian plaster that is just dated-looking and ugly. It looks like stucco but I will get it right thanks to your help!
Nice tutorial. And you're funny 😁
Just wanted to say thank you for this. I've watched quite a few videos on drywall while tackling progressively bigger/harder fixes around the house. None of the videos I've seen so far went through the basics of angle. As a result I've been floating at 45 and lower and trying to compensate for the thick application. Looking forward to practicing with thinner coats. Again, thank you!
You’re quite welcome.
Great Vid Spencer many thanks
You are the Mr. Rodgers of skimming. I meant that as a compliment. Mr. Rodgers was just the same in real life as on his TV show. Good job. God's speed. RS
Thank you.
Needed the pep talk 😅 gonna go cover my dodgy first coated ceiling more confidently now.
thanks for the encouragement!!
great video! thank you for this.
U a master, will learn all i can from ya and repaint my house
I'll be watching tomorrow when you break out the festool sander.
I've been running the 5-in Makita orbital with a vacuum hose.
Every time I say, "next skim coating job I'm going to get one of those pole sander/vacuum"
Someday
Came for the skim coat, stayed for the jokes !
😂
like getting a skim coat lesson from Christopher Walken. Fantastic
Savin on drywall guys and therapy all in one video. How did you do that to me🤗
Thinness great thanks ❤
Better than rolling method I do the same way as this guy may take longer but worth doing
I'm Calling bull on andy's 'device' 😂
OMG you are brill! So funny!
GOOD !👍
Watching the video now. Let's lay the mud on!
I have been binge-watching your videos like a season of 'The Office' today. You have me so pumped to get started with my first DIY painting and wallpaper projects! Only thing is I have orange peel textured, satin-painted walls... bleh.
Do I need to do any prep to the painted walls before skim coating?
After the skim coating dries, you recommend the Gardz - would this be the same whether I wanted to paint over the new nontextured walls or put up wallpaper?
I think my main concern is the proper layering and steps necessary to achieve what I want in each of the two cases (papering and painting).
[Any advice that leads to me becoming half as good as you will be kept strictly confidential 😂😂]
Melissa,
Thank you!
Would you please share your experience with my teaching and videos with everyone else by considering to give me a five star review on the following link with some nice words?

1. Before you Skim Coat, Apply PVA primer over semi gloss paint in order to get traction when you’re Skim Coat; if however the paint is flat, proceed to Skim Coat without any primer.
2. After the Skim Coat, after it dries, proceed to seal it with Gardz or RX-35 (pro-999)
Yes.
It would be the same whether you wanted to paint over the moon on textured walls or put up wallpaper.
Thank you so much for watching my videos
Can we put silk paint after this work ?
Nice job. After this you can enter the Christopher Walkin look/talk alike contest. ;-)
You've been doing this a while and I appreciate the knowledge. However, I think if I can use an analogy you're like a basketball player who has good shooting form but can't explain the actual mechanics of it. Two things. You suggested 90 degree skimming but didn't actually use it in the video for the most part. Second, explain what your hands and fingers are doing while using your tools. Putting pressure on one side of the blade/knife with your thumb and finger moving in one direction and keeping mud in the center are what eliminates lines. Diagnose what your "feel" is from years of practice and you can articulate even better what newcomers need to learn. Not being negative but you have a big audience who can benefit from even more information because drywall IS FRUSTRATING.
My issue is when I’m skimming I try to make the lines match up with where I previously worked and it’s always started to dry so it peels. Idk what to do I’m so discouraged
Can one apply peel n stick on a newly skimmed wall after it dries?
Very informative video, thankyou for posting.. I have a question if you dnt mind answering... I'm in the UK, in my house it's 100 year old,. I've peeled of the wallpaper and the old plaster has come away with some of it.. 4 mill patches everywhere plus mapping.. so my question Is, will that joint compound be OK to skim a full room and cover the big missing plaster patches? Also , would I need some angle beading for corners ? I can imagine plaster holding on a corner? Thankyou..
@@davvo1234 … You don’t need the corner bead. although you can use it to assist you on the inside corners but yes, fill the holes with this but before you do it see if you can get GARDZ in a can… It is an acrylic primer specifically meant for this
@spencercolgan brilliant,thankyou..I'm subbing to you ...
@@spencercolgan oh I nearly forgot to ask... do I need to put on some pva glue before skimming with the compound? And do I need to lightly scratch the existing plaster before I start for the skim to cling to?
@@davvo1234 no and no way. There’s glue in plaster compound sir.
@spencercolgan cheers bud.. I can't get the compound you're using over here,so I'm going for the knauf fill and finish lite and fingers crossed it works..
Thanks Spencer!
Can I prime and skim coat over foil like wallpaper?
I peeled wallpaper to find a foil like wallpaper underneath….it was been extremely hard to remove. Thank you.
LOL, At 7:28, you mention that if you want to hire someone like us, you say "You'll have to pay out.....money" . I think you caught yourself from saying "..out of you ass!"" lol
You sound just like Cristopher Walken 😂
Spencer, do I need to size walls before hanging peel and stick wallpaper?
Yes. Use rx 35
Thanks! Just finished my first coat of joint compound. Heading to sherwin Williams to get some Roman PRO-999 RX-35 Wallcovering sealer and primer
@@mandiconstantine496 I wish you the best of luck. Be confident
@@spencercolgan thanks! I have one more question. I’m wallpapering a small 1/2 bathroom (4x5feet) with a door that has 1” on the adjacent wall, then the corner. Extremely tight spot. The wall above it is 1 foot high. How should I wallpaper that tiny section of wall? This is my first attempt at hanging wallpaper, and watching your videos is like taking a master class! I could not have made it this far without your videos.
@@mandiconstantine496 hi! I will answer in depth shortly. Since you have benefited so much h, I’m so happy to hear!! Would you please give me a 5-star review on my google and tell everyone else what you says here?
Cant thank you enough.

Oh man you made me lose it with that texture bit.
“That’s texture…” 😐
Do what
Rough
I can smell your drill
You're talking to me all wrong... It's the wrong tone.
