Cool you mentioned the rails and ties. I got some ties back in the 1980s that the Steelton and Highspire R.R. took out. They were old then. The ties with the S shaped strips on the end. Nice relaxing ride on that line. Nice video.
Glad you enjoyed Michael. You knew what I was talking about the S clips then. Really appreciate your riding along with us today and writing in my friend.
@@ccrx6700 Yes i worked all around that stuff. Locomotive crane helper at the former Frog and Switch in Steelton then when that closed i went to the rail mill. From 1993 till 2014.
Dang how unfortunate they didn't know who I was.... LOL Changed 4 rails out last couple of week ends with no hydraulic tools, all hand pulling and driving spikes, so yep a real Gandy. Thanks so much for bringing us along again. I'm always learning things from you. If I'm near some rail, I look for the roll date on them. And I kinda figured that's what the metal on the end of the ties did but now I have something else to look for. I also enjoyed listening to that EMD idle.
Awesome comment John! So glad you are now looking for things you didn't understand what they were before, that makes me feel good to hear you do that. Always is a pleasure to have you join us and take in the show my friend.
Nice ride! The last train I was on was back in September, 1990 on the #1218 "Steam Power Special" from Knoxville to Kingston steam plant and back. That was unforgettable!
Thanks again for the ride Dave, really enjoying the scenery. Did some homework for you on that double ended co co unit I mentioned - the generator was an EMD D12 and the traction motors EMD D27.
Your very welcome Richard. Thanks for the info on your unit. In contrast, on our Sd 40-2, generator is a D14 and traction motors D 77. Now I cannot begin to tell you the differences other than the model numbers between your unit and mine tho. Really appreciate your thinking of me and for taking the time to write in today my friend.
I like them too George. Wish we had them on our track. They seem to hold tight against the rail really well. Thanks so much for dropping by and taking in today's home movie my friend.
Foreign track will inspect. Another right-of-way will Tamp. You truly are the honorary maintenance of way supervisor Sure looks like a great ride with some fine scenery. Pssst. The C&O unit is MILW RD so the only coal mines it ever served We're in Indiana and possibly some near LaSalle Illinois. It did however.bump off quite a few 2-8-0s Between not being able to buy diesels during the war C&O no doubt felt an obligation to buy Steam locomotives especially in areas where coal production was their largest shipper
Thanks for the awesome comment Paul. I'm not sure when that unit came to C&O but did know it was ex MR. Pretty cool isn't it! Couple of other folks wrote in on the last Elkins video that they probably saw it in action on the MR. Always is a pleasure to have you visit with us and we enjoy hearing from you my friend.
It was a good ride Thomas. Wondering if you have any of those old F units in India that are still lurking around? They were a very popular model back in their day. Always is a pleasure to have you visit with me my friend.
Would love to come out and be your camera guy for the day sometime. Would make a cool vacation going that way on a train to film my favorite train guy talking about trains! Thanks Dave!
Your always welcome to come ride track with me Oregon Crow, that would be a fun day. Thanks for the really nice compliment and for taking in tonight's home movie my friend.
Dave, enjoyed whole video, but especially the opening shot of the EF's. Their throbbing idle is just like the EP20's and EP22's I got to play with when at PennCentral. That's what a diesel locomotive is supposed to sound like. Sweet music. Thank you.
Really glad you listening to that sound, it is music to a raillroader's ears. I don't have much knowledge about the E units, something good for me to learn new things about. How awesome you worked for PC. Anytime you want to invite me over to your house I will consider it. You can tell me PC stories all day long and I will be all ears! Dave, great part 2. Love your always on the job inspecting the rails, love that you shown the hair pin spike, I have a few. The water fall looked peaceful. Just like the parlor car.. thanks for taking us along...

My regards to our fellow veterans on this Veterans Day 11/11/2022, formerly known as Armistice Day. Thank you for sharing the wonderful ride in this video. I wanted to ride Amtrak round trip Fresno CA - Dallas TX but they have a segment from Bakersfield CA to Los Angeles where they take 'em off the train and put 'em on a bus. Not for me.
Your very welcome Robin. So nice of you to drop by and watch. An Amtrak ride interrupted by bus? That stinks, don't blame you on that. Always a pleasure to have you join in with us and watch my friend.
My commuter RR had a couple of F7s we used for traction power back in the early '90s. They were awful- we had to basically rewire them, and they had the worst silver over black paint job I've ever seen; we called them the Silver Bullets. Everyone hated running them, everyone hated working on them. 😂
I've never been inside one Ted, but can imagine the cramped quarters one must have had to work on them with. In their day they were the cat's meow tho. Put the final nail in the coffin for steam because of their reliability and ease of operation and servicing compared to steam. One thing tho, steam was easier to get in and out of :-) Thanks so much for watching and writing in my friend.

This next summer I'm going to take time off to do a little scenic stuff around here. I've been going on 3 years no breaks with my shop. Hopefully I'll be opening around the first of the year. So, I'll be doing videos this next summer of the travels and will certainly be hitting the rail attractions which I'm sure you will like. Really appreciate your stopping by and watching this one my friend. Oh, and who said anything about me retiring....LOL
Loved this Dave The sound of the F7 is very nice Got a good smooth ride there, the cup test is something I like to do too so far the record goes to Eurostar at 186mph rock steady LOL. Pandrols are used a lot over here too but we do not have anything like the C or mesh driven into the ends of ties. Riding up front was great but that track defect needs sorting gave me goosebumps LOL.
Very glad you enjoyed cedarcam. Did I read that right 186 MPH? if so, wow!!! I like the Pandrol clips, sure wish we had them on our track, I think they are a much superior fastening method than spikes. They hold tight against the rail. So they don't use anything on the tie ends to keep them from splitting? The mesh is much better than those c or s clips, mesh is all they use here now. Press them on the ends with a big hydraulic press. Really glad to have you visit with me today my friend.
@@ccrx6700 Yep you read it right Dave The new ones are even faster up to 220mph The first time I rode on one I was in awe. You do not feel they are going so fast until you pass over a freeway or get alongside one and it looks like the traffic is stood or crawling along. The pandrols are really good for stopping rail creep as well. I was interested when you showed the ties on another video we have never used anything to stop them splitting, I wonder if it has to do with the type of wood used, I am not sure what these days but they used oak years ago and some other lighter wood. You sure could tell the difference in weight
Hi Dave! Love the countryside shots. Interesting the parlor car suspension difference. Your guest was interesting too. Bridges were awesome! (med update: Had some rough spots this week, but well enough to visit my grandaughter for her 3rd birthday this weekend.)
Very glad you enjoyed Fireball. Was kind of you to write in. Recovery is not always a straight slanted line up, it has some zigs and zags, but over all you are headed in the right direction and glad to hear that. Have a great time at the party my friend!
Looks like a cool place Dave. Thanks for taking us along. Not surprised you had to do a little track inspection lol. Steve probably would have done the same. Interesting about the glass of water. Heading over to check out that other channel now. Hope your evening is going well. Jenny
Thank you for the very nice comment Jenny. Yep if he and I were together, we'd still be there checking gage and marking stuff with our orange spray paint.... LOL Really appreciate your visiting with us and watching my friend.
Not sure of the 7094's history, but with the dual headlamps, that would indicate she was a passenger service unit, can't tell if the box on top is part of the head end power, or a winterization hatch. That doesn't mean she didn't haul coal from time to time, but was ordered as a passenger unit at least initially. I believe the brake stand would be set up different as well.
Actually, the EMD F-units could be ordered with or without the upper gyrating headlight, and the box on the top at the back of the unit is a winterization hatch, which recirculates warm air back into the engine room in very cold weather. Whether or not that unit was a passenger engine would depend on the original paperwork when it was delivered, as the trucks would have different gearing, compared to a freight service unit. The unit painted for WM is/was definitely a former passenger unit due to the 400 gallon extra water tank between the fuel tank and the front truck, and that unit was classified as an FP-7, meaning it was intended for passenger service, and its 4 feet longer than a normal F-unit.
Thanks for writing in kleetus and sharing that with us. The 26L brake system on our SD locos has a switch where you can change the air in the brake pipe for either passenger or freight, the F units had the 26 brake system but don't know if it was an L designation or not. Modern new SD locos still have a variation of the 26 brake system, it has stood the test of time, although the new system has many upgrades over the years. Appreciate your dropping by today and watching my friend.
CCRX6700 is right about the brakes being able to be configured to either freight or passenger, the Reading and Northern has 2 former NS F-units, as well as GP & SD units that they use for both freight AND passenger service on their Lehigh Gorge Scenic trains, and also the Reading Rambles when the steamers are not available or suffer a breakdown. There are very recent videos of an SD on the front and a GP on the rear of the Lehigh Gorge train.
I have not yet found out when it was made Ralph. The F series of locos was built between 1939 and 1960 but don't know the year for this unit. They were a big factor in putting steam to rest with their reliability and ease of operation compared to steam. Really appreciate your stopping by and watching today's home movie my friend.
Hi Dave so if that f unit has a prime mover is it an alco unit ?? The f units on cape cod railway had Detroits Great video thanks for having us along with you and the wife great view
It is an EMD design in the F units Gary, I have heard they "borrowed" many ideas from Alco, but the engine was not made by Alco in those locos. Glad you enjoyed and thanks so much for stopping by my friend.
Well when I said that in the video, I did not know it was former M.R. Would you happen to know when it got sold to C&O? Always is a pleasure to have you join us and we really appreciate all your great comments my friend.
@@ccrx6700 Answer is : Never. Out of service in 1980. It was supposed to have been scrapped in 1983 but was saved from that. Also, the plate in front of the horn dates back to Milw Rd days and would have been there to prevent snow and ice from packing the horn.
Glad you enjoyed aleu650. Pandrol clips take the place of spikes in holding rail gage. They are a superior fastening system to spikes and hold very tight against the rail, where spikes over time can come loose. Hope that helps explain better. Really appreciate your watching and writing in today my friend.
Coach cars ride a whole lot nicer than coal hopper cars, different truck sets under them. I had to do a track inspection when I was there Shirley, couldn't help my self....LOL yep they need a brush cutter!
Have no idea, we ate on the train and then back at the place we were staying that night. Nice dinner they served in the coach, not a full course meal but a nice fix your own deli which was perfect for the trip.
Well consider this Mack, the F units are 1500 HP and our SD 38-2 is 2,000. F units only have 4 traction motors and ours has 6, so we gonna pull a lot more weight than those would. You might want to do a search for tractive effort for both locos and compare them that way. Thanks so much my friend for dropping by and taking in the show today.
it varies from model to model Our SD 38-2 is 2,000 hp. Our SD 40-2 is 3,000 HP. Those are old locos. Modern GE/Wabtec locos go from 4000 to 4400 HP. An EMD SD 90MAC is 4300. An SD 90MAC-H is 6,000. Thanks for stopping by and taking in the video today my friend.

Cool you mentioned the rails and ties. I got some ties back in the 1980s that the Steelton and Highspire R.R. took out. They were old then. The ties with the S shaped strips on the end. Nice relaxing ride on that line. Nice video.
Glad you enjoyed Michael. You knew what I was talking about the

It did however.bump off quite a few 2-8-0s Between not being able to buy diesels during the war C&O no doubt felt an obligation to buy Steam locomotives especially in areas where coal production was their largest shipper

Dave, enjoyed whole video, but especially the opening shot of the EF's. Their throbbing idle is just like the EP20's and EP22's I got to play with when at PennCentral. That's what a diesel locomotive is supposed to sound like. Sweet music. Thank you.

My commuter RR had a couple of F7s we used for traction power back in the early '90s. They were awful- we had to basically rewire them, and they had the worst silver over black paint job I've ever seen; we called them the Silver Bullets. Everyone hated running them, everyone hated working on them. 😂
I've never been inside one Ted, but can imagine the cramped
quarters one must have had to work on them with. In their
day they were the cat's meow tho. Put the final nail in the
coffin for steam because of their reliability and ease of
operation and servicing compared to steam. One thing tho, steam
was easier to get in and out of :-) Thanks so much for watching and
writing in my friend.

I like the Pandrol clips, sure wish we had them
on our track, I think they are a much superior fastening method
than spikes. They hold tight against the rail. So they don't use
anything on the tie ends to keep them from splitting? The mesh
is much better than those c or s clips, mesh is all they use here
now. Press them on the ends with a big hydraulic press. Really
glad to have you visit with me today my friend.

@@ccrx6700 You are welcome Dave!
The 26L
brake system on our SD locos has a switch where you can
change the air in the brake pipe for either passenger or freight,
the F units had the 26 brake system but don't know if it was an L
designation or not. Modern new SD locos still have a variation
of the 26 brake system, it has stood the test of time, although the
new system has many upgrades over the years. Appreciate
your dropping by today and watching my friend.
VERY COOL!DAVE GONNA FIX YOUR TRACK THE RIGHT WAY!
WHAT YEAR IS THAT TRAIN MADE?SORRY IF I MISSED IT...HAVE FUN GUYS
I have not yet found out when it was made Ralph. The F series of
locos was built between 1939 and 1960 but don't know the year
for this unit. They were a big factor in putting steam to rest
with their reliability and ease of operation compared to steam.
Really appreciate your stopping by and watching today's home
movie my friend.
Hi Dave so if that f unit has a prime mover is it an alco unit ?? The f units on cape cod railway had Detroits Great video thanks for having us along with you and the wife great view
It is an EMD design in the F units Gary, I have heard they "borrowed"
many ideas from Alco, but the engine was not made by Alco in
those locos. Glad you enjoyed and thanks so much for stopping by
my friend.
As it is a MILW Road loco, there was little chance it ever ran with the C&O 1309.
Well when I said that in the video, I did not know it was former M.R.
Would you happen to know when it got sold to C&O? Always is
a pleasure to have you join us and we really appreciate all your
great comments my friend.
@@ccrx6700 Answer is : Never. Out of service in 1980. It was supposed to have been scrapped in 1983 but was saved from that.
Also, the plate in front of the horn dates back to Milw Rd days and would have been there to prevent snow and ice from packing the horn.

sir C&O, formerly Milwaukee Road.
Beautiful! Could you explain in more detail what are those clips that put on the sides of the sleepers for? 👍
Glad you enjoyed aleu650. Pandrol clips take the place of spikes
in holding rail gage. They are a superior fastening system to
spikes and hold very tight against the rail, where spikes over time
can come loose. Hope that helps explain better. Really appreciate
your watching and writing in today my friend.

CCRX has better track even if this train rides s bit nicer. They need a brush cutter, too. Look what you taught me, Dave!
Coach cars ride a whole lot nicer than coal hopper cars, different
truck sets under them. I had to do a track inspection when I was there
Shirley, couldn't help my self....LOL yep they need a brush cutter!
They have a nice Cracker Barrel near by?
Have no idea, we ate on the train and then back at the place
we were staying that night. Nice dinner they served in the
coach, not a full course meal but a nice fix your own deli which

I wounder how much weight there engine pull compared to CCRX.
Well consider this Mack, the F units are 1500 HP and our
SD 38-2 is 2,000. F units only have 4 traction motors and ours
has 6, so we gonna pull a lot more weight than those would.
You might want to do a search for tractive effort for both
locos and compare them that way. Thanks so much my
friend for dropping by and taking in the show today.

Your welcome, really appreciate your riding along with us today my friend.
1500 horsepower, what is the horsepower of a modern locomotive?
it varies from model to model Our SD 38-2 is 2,000 hp. Our SD 40-2 is 3,000 HP. Those are old locos. Modern GE/Wabtec locos go
from 4000 to 4400 HP. An EMD SD 90MAC is 4300. An SD 90MAC-H is 6,000. Thanks for stopping by and taking in the video today
