For those of you who are wondering how Jake brakes work, I'll try to explain in simplest form. When the Jake brakes are activated.. the exhaust valves are kept open. It turns the engine into a big loud air compressor. The force needed to compress the air out through the kept open exhaust valves is what slows the truck down.
not quite; activating the jake brake opens the exhaust valves but that just allows all the compression to escape and therefore it can't turn the crankshaft anymore, resulting in a slow-down
@@CB-el3sv i gotchu, but i think youre missing the key word in the name which is compression *release* brake. The engine slows down because all the compression in the cylinders is vented (see: released) to the atmosphere. It doesn’t keep the exhaust valves open through the whole compression cycle, just opens them right when the “bang” would normally happen. So the engine has to do the work of compressing the air but doesn’t get the push back on the cylinder from the compressed air, at least that’s my understanding of it.
I'm glad everyone here knows how they work. I tried to explain it in the simplest way possible so that people who had no idea how they work could understand it.
Normal Diesel engines don’t have a butterfly valve on the intake, like a gas engine does. So when you let off the accelerator, even with no fuel being supplied to the engine and causing a detonation, a Diesel engine still compresses the air in the cylinder which is transferred to the crankshaft as energy, which causes little to no engine braking. So a Jake brake causes the exhaust valves to open very near TDC, which releases the compressed air in the cylinder to the atmosphere(out the exhaust system). It turns a Diesel engine effectively into an air compressor.
I remember popping my Jakes going through a tunnel... was second greatest sound my truck made. First was when the flex pipe came off right at the turbo, but I had the music up and was cruising. A compression release engine brake, compression brake, or decompression brake is an engine braking mechanism installed on some diesel engines. When activated, it opens exhaust valves to the cylinders, right before the compression stroke ends, releasing the compressed gas trapped in the cylinders, and slowing the vehicle.
At least I get to see a few in service on gen sets. And hopefully I'll hear that town leaf pickup vehicle with one ,I didn't hear it last year I hope it's ok
The best Jake brake sounds are back in the good old days in the 80s when drivers had Detroit silver 92 V8 with straight pipes you can hear those straight pipes miles away
They’re called jakes because they were invented by a company called Jacobs Vehicle System inc Jakes only slow down the engine and that braking power is only applied to the rest of the vehicle when the clutch is engaged (clutch pedal released) when your clutch is disengaged (clutch pedal depressed) only the engine is being slowed and that lets you rev match faster. Therefore shifting faster, losing less speed while shifting, and saving fuel. Fun fact Jake brakes do not use any fuel at all. Edit Fun fact two, some modern trucks with automated transmissions also use engine braking to be able to shift quicker. Also edited for clarity. I can make a video explaining some of these things if people happen to be interested.
These guys are using the Jake to bring down the rpm of the motor quickly to shift quicker while floating through the gears (shifting without the clutch). The downside is it does slow the truck down a little between gears. If they were to just stay on the throttle slightly between gears it wouldn't engage but they would have to wait slightly longer to shift while maintaining their speed. 6 to one, half a dozen to the other.
@@bobwilliams3502 I'm a mechanic so not as good at it as our drivers but they go threw gears quicker all you hear is wruup, wruup, wruup, wruup no long pause inbetween when shifting just the engine pulling. Those were ok. The driver in the all black Pete and black trl definitely knew how to jake shift. But that poor guy in the green day cab, was trying but just couldnt get it right. Keep trying driver, you'll get it "eventually ". You know you got it when you chirp the jake, not let it actually go in.
@@adderaala wouldn't you need a specific setting like, JUST for that? I've driven many trucks, some the Jake comes on with the pedal, some have a delay off the throttle but very few have the Jake as soon as the pedal is off. And it's nearly impossible to drive in traffic, let off and the bitch is at idle, maybe skipping shifts would work. Idk.
I like N14 Jake brake sound the best and then c15 Cat . I’ve never heard a KTA600 Jake brake . I think Cummins should have kept making the N14 and adapted newer tech to it like they do the K series . I don’t think the ISX is as good as an N series .
Us mechanics don't much care for the ISX. The newerQSX 15 is a much better design. That old N-14 was a good engine but it had it's share of problems. And all the 855 based engines are a PITA to change an air compressor on.
@@michaelvrooman5681 I've been a diesel mechanic for 20 years N14 and 855 Cummins are my absolute favorite engines to work on . I learned in big cams and I love them .

I use to work for a trucking company and we had to move trailers around in the lot (I don't have my CDL) we use to use the jake brake at low speed and the boss would always get pissed but the sound was worth the ass chewing
these clowns that are shifting gears and letting the Jake work, They are going to drop a valve , Because you are whining the engine up for torque and when you hit the Jake it is locking the exhaust valves up and when it kicks off you are putting the torque power again, What happens is the valve Spring can not close that quick and what happens is the keepers come out of the valve , The keepers are what holds the valve in place So it does not drop in your piston hole , So good luck on you Jake break gear Jamming shifters

You sound like my hubby who drove in the 60ties and 70ties before you were born lol .He could pull apart a whole truck replace parts fix any messed up truck and had it running in top shape.Never went to truck school a day in his life.He almost 80 now and not too healthy.Fully retired. These youngsters dont under stand
A professional would know that I live to hear my jakes but only when there doing there job and only then I’ve bin smacked more times then I can count starting out with the old timers equipment they was good to me and took care of me but didn’t play that abuse of equipment crap
Thats right. If you're floating the gears you have to stay on the throttle just enough to not engage the JB between gears. If using the clutch you have to push it at the same moment you let off the throttle. Its not hard either way
@@michaeldeloach838 I keep that throttle right at the sweet spot while floating. I think it's a art form to really be in sync with your motor and transmission

I’ll never forget the moment while I was at work delivering packages for Amazon in Hialeah Florida. I was in a neighborhood on a bright hot sunny day and I hear the monstrous engine in a distant behind me, the crackling and loud noises from a man made machine, I turn around and there I see it, there she is, a white long nosed peterbuilt, all white even the rims, and the 32 foot tail behind it. Slowly passing me , it was like seeing a legendary Pokémon, but one day I will be in one
I gotta tell ya, there are few sounds in this world that tickle my brain in all the right ways. Jake braking is one of them.
We all know Jakes are well appreciated coming down Monteagle
hey if you don't want to hear it don't live next to a 6 miles of downgrade.
@@JeremiahDouglas who tf said they didn't wont to hear it?
@@jeanclaudevandam8232 i don't know the same people who call me in when i have to run my reefer and almost get arrested cause i tell the cops i can't move i haven't finished my break
@@JeremiahDouglas Honey you make a living fk what others say. Keep hitting them Jakes I will be hitting mine too
@@jeanclaudevandam8232 alrighty big hugs rachael=)
I used to drive a 1966 Pete 359 tow truck with a 5/4 t/s. It was factory no front brakes, so I had to use the Jake all the time, I loved it, it was LOUD !!
When I was young I liked all that noise but later on in about my 40th year of almost 50yrs of trucking I liked it quiet as possible.
Dash lights off please.
Me too bj
Hell yeah Amazing ❤
Love from Delhi, India 🇮🇳 ❤️
Cool trucks making cool noises!!! Absolutely love every second of this!!!
Kids these days will never know how good a detroit sounded climbing a hill, and then popping the jake to get down the other side.
At least I get to see a few in service on gen sets.
And hopefully I'll hear that town leaf pickup vehicle with one ,I didn't hear it last year I hope it's ok
Every time you hear a jake brake,
A Karen lets out a tiny lil squeaky fart.
Ppl have Jake brake competitions? That's so cool
Loud pipes save life’s 👍👍👍👍
Not always. sometimes they keep you from hearing something you need to hear to keep yourself out of trouble.
a big love I didn't know the content of your videos I really liked big Big UP from France 🇨🇵 and see you next video 👍👌💪😎
Screw the signs, Jakes are a part of safe driving
That sums up the modern world - the one single UK clip has roadwork cones everywhere!
Jake brakes and turbo waste valves have to be the best sounds in the whole world.
These are great. Thank you for putting this together
The best Jake brake sounds are back in the good old days in the 80s when drivers had Detroit silver 92 V8 with straight pipes you can hear those straight pipes miles away
I think you were hearing the Detroit 2 stroke song. Jakes only used for braking assist
@@deere7227 I think you're right
You can shift faster that way thus going through the gears quicker and theoretically saving some fuel. But I have to admit it does sound cool
They’re called jakes because they were invented by a company called Jacobs Vehicle System inc
Jakes only slow down the engine and that braking power is only applied to the rest of the vehicle when the clutch is engaged (clutch pedal released) when your clutch is disengaged (clutch pedal depressed) only the engine is being slowed and that lets you rev match faster. Therefore shifting faster, losing less speed while shifting, and saving fuel.
Fun fact Jake brakes do not use any fuel at all.
Edit
Fun fact two, some modern trucks with automated transmissions also use engine braking to be able to shift quicker.
I got the impression a lot of these guys were low hours showing off.....lots of room to improve.
U r rite on dom. Jake on upshifting is a rookie hot shot trick and shows stupidity. But that's normal now
Red & white wrecking truck is so pretty.
Those were ok. The driver in the all black Pete and black trl definitely knew how to jake shift. But that poor guy in the green day cab, was trying but just couldnt get it right. Keep trying driver, you'll get it "eventually ". You know you got it when you chirp the jake, not let it actually go in.
Why would you put the J on for upshifting?
@@twointhepinkoneinthestink faster shifting
Freightliner
@@adderaala that is the most insane thing I've every heard.
Idk.
Hear the J-Brake a lot on the road near our apartment. Love every second!! 😎
Music to my ears!!
0:30 the truck just farting
@@dave0z96 i hate pulling the fuel pump, compressor and accessory drive on the 855 based engines to reseal the cam followers. And the old 400 low flows are a P.I.T.A. to troubleshoot cooling system problems on.
Look at Me! Look at Me! I'm uh truck driver and I make noise!
I never use my Jake Brake while empty or Bobtail near residential homes! It’s just rude and I don’t need to feed my ego I need to feed my wallet!
Or hear yourself shitting
Amen. Abuse of Jakes lead to those signs
Sound .........wooow
Greetings from Germany Peter
Who are the 3 that didn't like this
Well why d you watch the title said it all
That was awesome more please
31 now, love them jakes. 👍
Awesome ! I loved this video 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Never understood why guys like loud Jakes. The cab is loud enough. I just want quiet after a day of driving.
They think it makes them macho and cool...
Ahhhh...The sound of B-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-T at 3 AM!!!
Love em Jakes
I LOVE IT !!!!! best sound ever !!!! keep those Jakes hot !!!
Jake brakes are most useful in residential neighborhoods !! ( Hey everybody… Look at me . )
Like we used to say in the Marines there’s always that 10% who don’t get it
I think I'm going to make my RV sound like that.
I like using it through town at 3am.
Why would you put a exhaust beside a fuel tank 🤔
Diesel fuel requires a lot of heat so it won't catch on fire from the exhaust
Sounds awesome in the mountains
I use to work for a trucking company and we had to move trailers around in the lot (I don't have my CDL) we use to use the jake brake at low speed and the boss would always get pissed but the sound was worth the ass chewing
Engine break sound is so satisfying 😌
Brake not Break that means something is broken.
these clowns that are shifting gears and letting the Jake work,
They are going to drop a valve ,
Because you are whining the engine up for torque and when you hit the Jake it is locking the exhaust valves up and when it kicks off you are putting the torque power again, What happens is the valve Spring can not close that quick and what happens is the keepers come out of the valve , The keepers are what holds the valve in place So it does not drop in your piston hole , So good luck on you Jake break gear Jamming shifters
🙏🏻
I always think that when I watch these vids, the jake is for slowing down not shifting
Tell them my engineer!!!
@ 0:36
“WHOOPSIE, my apologies, my BAD, my sweet Ol’ Truck’s gots gas 2day!”
2:02 it sounds cool but it's so rough on you and everything that way. Good jake brake shifting is not knowing their on until you wanna slow down.
@@devindefelice1879 although, with these guys in the video many of them are using the Jake to bring down the rpm's quicker to shift through the gears quicker. The problem with that is you lose a little speed also between gears. I'd rather just keep it going and wait slightly longer to shift but that's just me
@@michaeldeloach838 I agree. Although it sounds cool it makes for a rough a ride. Try and keep it as smooth as I can but my Jake's stay on all day lol
@@devindefelice1879 I have a brand new '22 Cascadia now and the Jake is so quiet but at this point in my career (30 years) I can appreciate the quiet haha
Awesome!! First clip is either a guy taking his kid for a ride or he's back from a trip, and saying Honey I'm home!
N14 with “Gutted mufflers” wanna talk about some jakes that pop.
I drive a straight piped n14. Phone conversation while driving in the mointains?? Forget about it
Love them Jake Brakes ❤
I totally understand when engine braking is used on a steep decline. But using it in flatland is just obnoxious, and I hope they enjoy their tickets.
2nd One is in my country (Chile) :O Nice To See The old freightliner of the driver lucas from the city of iquique!
Amateurs that leave the jake switch on yet can't shift without the jake coming on.
I chuckle when I see that.
My Jake switches are on all day and never once have they come on when shifting only bc i know how to drive. It drives me absolutely crazy when drivers have Jake's on between shifts
