So... I had no idea that handling sphagnum moss with bare hands was risky until you mentioned it in passing. I paused the video, looked it up and I'll be damned. Fungal infection (sporotrichosis) is a thing. Will be breaking out the gloves next time I work with sphagnum. Thank you!
Hey Mangesh, when deciduous trees start to push you can get away with a lot, as you can see at the end of the video a week after doing this procedure it started flowering.
I just did some major work on a small Florida maple. I was worried, it ended up with few roots. But the buds are just opening, and it was vigorous, so hopful it survives.
😂😂😂 that is perfectly fine do to and you should on your very first styling, the tree was so happy it started flowering and then pushing leaves shorty after
Hey Jerome, could you use sphagnum moss? Why did you mention you'd need gloves for that? I've got a couple trident maples, can they effectively be treated the same as Japanese maples?
Hey Jarren, you can pretty much treat them the same although tridents love full sun all year. While sphagnum moss is typically not dangerous, certain fungal infections have been associated with it. One common ailment is Sporotrichosis which occurs due to a fungus growing along with sphagnum moss. This mostly applies to live moss, but still be careful.
Hey David, Thank you so much for your nice comment. I didn't grow it, moss grows everywhere here in Georgia so I have the luxury to just scrap it off trees and sidewalks.
Hi Jerome, Question about sphagnum moss, you said you use gloves when manipulating sphagnum moss - why is it not safe to touch it with the hands? thanks
Hi, While sphagnum moss is typically not dangerous, certain fungal infections have been associated with it. One common ailment is Sporotrichosis which occurs due to a fungus growing along with sphagnum moss. I would make a habit of wearing gloves when handling spagnum moss
Great video as always Jerome, one question, why not just bury it all? I would think that is the safer option and would give you more choice of roots to work with later?
You have very nice and informative videos, which I like to watch here in Slovakia. I want to ask you that Zelkova Nire can withstand even negative temperatures - frost in winter. Thank you for your videos!
i've been repotting for three days and now im watching this. thanks jerome
Potting season! :)
Hmmm, I'd like to see these new roots...

Do you intend to remove the wires soon?
Beautiful bonsai
Cool video I did that with a three-cornered maple but it was still very young! Thank you for this great video
there is no link in the description on how you styled the tree ...
Great Video! Do you have recommendations for what kind of rocks to use for "Root over Rock"?
Looks great! 🌲🌳🍀🌞🌞🌞🌞
Very nice. Looking forward to progression videos
You get new microphones? Sounds good!
I love this video! Saw many on the subject and this is my favorite :)
thank you!
Thank you Lana!
That tree is like, "yo, pal, I used to have roots."
It looks nice, I just feel bad for the tree that you were so brutal chopping the roots.

Wow! That's going to come out to be very nice by next Fall! Looking forward to that update! Nice work!
Did you grow your own garden moss?
Hey David, Thank you so much for your nice comment. I didn't grow it, moss grows everywhere here in Georgia so I have the luxury to just scrap it off trees and sidewalks.
Toller Baum,
ich kann mir schon sehr gut vorstellen, wie der mal aussehen wird.

@@WeareTheBonsaiSupply Thanks I didn't know about that :) Great info
My trees die if I even THINK of doing that kind of root work. Good luck. Thanks
Timing is everything Matt. Take a look at the end of the video, it started flowering and pushing new leaves already. It is as happy as can be.🙂
I must work on my timing AND patience. Thanks
Can you do an update on this tree? Did it survive?
Hi! It did survive, but I sold it pretty much right after the video came out!
beautiful!
Hi I have a Japanese maple already has its leaves I can transplant it or no longer?
Hey Alejandro, if the leaves are out already you have to wait another year.
Great video as always Jerome, one question, why not just bury it all? I would think that is the safer option and would give you more choice of roots to work with later?
Thank you Mitchell, that’s a great question! You can do both and it is equally as effective. I just didn’t want it to be buried for two years.
I really want to see if it survived!
Hi! it did survive, I will make a follow up video soon :)

Hi Radovan, Thank you very much for your nice feedback! Unfortunately, I am not familiar with that specie.
Are you growing this tree in florida

Hard work with tthese roots....
Yes, gotta rip that bandage right off
Brutal 😅😅😅. Can’t wait to see the results
Why do you need to wear gloves when handling spaghnum moss?
Poor, not even an interesting rock….
