      Yeah but the changes to the rear hardware will just carry over and they’ll retest it. Tesla did it right the first time. Model Y aced this very test in 2022. They did not need any revisions

      Right???? R1S got Marginal and the the lap seatbelt stayed on the lap which was a really good test

    I really wish safety standards would catch up to trucks so they're not behemoths that run the higher probability of killing pedestrians and decimating smaller cars. People are congratulating this but I see a vehicle with a design that will easily ramp up and over a car's hood/trunk and smash into the greenhouse.

      They test cars for impacts into structures and cars, they also test the autobrake system, which is FOR protecting pedestrians to try and stop or slow the impact to the poor pedestrian hit by the truck

      People buy SUVs and pickups because of a perceived idea that these vehicles are safer than, say, a small compact (which is kinda true when you consider weight difference)
      As that mentality takes off and more and more people drive SUVs and pickups, there's less smaller cars around, which ends up turning roads and the act of driving even more dangerous
      Because these vehicles are only "safer" against smaller cars where the smaller car has an obvious disadvantage

    Interestingly, the Good rating only applies to the 2024 model of the R1T, suggesting that Rivian made recent changes to the R1T to earn this score. Hopefully, they are able to make similar updates to the R1S.

    Feel like this is my current guess for safest car around today, the crash is great but at 7000lbs+ this thing is a tank in ways the test can't capture

    Does the rating also apply to the 2022 R1T? I didn’t see anything about updates made specifically to the 2024 model year.

    Im mind blown. that 40 mph crash looked like it smooshed the corner of the truck as if it was going 60 for any other vehicle but also absorbed so much of the energy of the crash. that looks incredibly smooshable but safe for a truck.

      Well most trucks have a big metal engine in the front and are less smooshable because of it

      Different seat and seat belt mounting points. Weight is about the same and structure is solid. Same with most cars that failed the test.

    Are safety bags in the back safe? Thought they didn't exist in the back seats because it could seriously injure kids.

      I’ve seen better, there were some elevated forces on the driver’s right lower leg in this test, but this is still excellent.

      GVWR is around 8550 lbs. Crash safety rating is not required by law.
