Great review. I find it peculiar that every other reviewer of this car said that the ELS sound system is the best they have ever heard, even in the 100k+ range, and you didn't like it one bit.
Great review but constantly comparing this vehicle to BMW, Benz and Audi is a bit much; when the X5, GLE and Q8 have been out much longer. When those vehicle came out they were big misses. It took years to get the X5 up to par and the GLE is a mechanical nightmare of a vehicle. The MDX Type-S out performs the Q8.
The touchpad and the absence of a traditional sport gear shifter are the 2 biggest flaws for me. I have always liked the exterior looks of the MDX and this type S looks and sounds like it will put a smile on my face getting from 0 to 60. The smile would even be better with the traditional sport shifter. Never been a fan of the paddle shifters. My wife will surely love the massaging driver seat so who knows…. A certified Used model might really be a good choice. Firs time viewer and subscriber here. Love your simple, clear, and concise review.
i wish acura would bring back the RSX Type S, that was such a fun car esp with the manual trans. overall i think acura is resting on its laurels, but good to see the MDX Type-S is some fun.
Love the review...as for the touchpad, it may just be a left brain right brain issue because I have absolutely no issue with it. While I do agree that Acura should have made it ALSO a touchscreen, the reality is that the touchscreen functionality is perfect, and even if it was also a touchscreen, I would still be using the touchpad 80% of the time. Any way, good review.
I saw the short video about Lexus. Did you know we can’t bring lots of good cars from Japan due to the import/export restriction. We have GTR if you want to go really first. Actually our roads are so narrow and “kei” size is popular. Small engine but with twin turbo and intercooler. Beat M series like a cupcake!! You should come to Japan and see what kind of cars we drive.
In recent years, Acura division is moving their new cars more upward to performance and premium while the Honda's new cars are dialing down to conservative (accord, civic) and more boxy (Pilot, CRV etc). They are trying to make the gap bigger between the two brands... this is similar to the business model of Audi/Volkswagen. For sure Acura is not yet at par to Mercedes and BMW but hey, Honda/Acura engines have been competing in races (and premium race like Formula 1) and slowly but surely they will in the future.
The handling comes directly from the SH-AWD which assists to directly increase the power the transmission puts to the wheels. To me the S type is not that special. S type is supposed to be a unique automobile experience when they slap that letter on a car. Take the NSX, now thats a hell of a car. Most families will buy the A-Spec as it comes with enough features fornthe money. Nobody buys a MDX because is fast or because its as good as a sports car.
Me who has been using laptops and computers my whole life I actually like the touchpad. I’m my opinion all touch pads are laggy, my mom has a 2023 c43 brand new and the whole iPad in the middle had a solid .5 second delay when you click something.
The passive charger is a huge defect of this model. It is not compatible with Apple's ring on the back of the phone. It sees the metal ring built into the phone as something foreign. I disagree with you on the touchpad. I was like you when I first bought mine. Now, I wouldn't own a car where I have to touch the screen. Thanks for posting.
I was on the fence with this one: on one hand the air springs are pretty great and the powertrain is fun, but on the other hand over $72k is a LOT for an MDX, especially since the A-spec is so much cheaper. I got dragged by some people in the comments, but my overall point was that over $70 grand opens up a LOT of options. Great review. I think you were more fair than I was. 😂
@@bg693 It’s my total lack of self esteem. I’m just hoping that someone confirms my viewpoint so that I can sleep at night. I toss and turn worrying what internet commenters will think of me. It’s maddening.
$70k opens up a lot of options in terms of vehicles. It’s when you start comparing features, tech, powertrain, practicality etc then you’ll realize this is the absolute best deal in this segment. $70k is not too much for an Acura, especially when brands like Kia is selling tellurides for $60k
Excellent video from the commentary to the editing 10 out of 10! And the “manual mode” automatically shifted IN manual mode it completely defeats the purpose. 😂
Acura did not do enough to separate the S-type from the other Mdx models, the price would indicate that the Mdx-S type should stand out from the crowds. Given HP, 355 is not enough for the weight of this vehicle. I own a 2011 MDX with 300 HP and 270 torque, given what i paid brand new, my car is fine. But this S type just is not enough, nor sure if Acura will sell a lot of these cars. The touch pad is the worst piece of technology the car has to offer. Basic Honda cars have a better inter active touchscreen. Seems like BMW has better SUV’s with a higher power output than Acura. Of course BMW is more expen$ive but the performance clearly surpasses Acura MDX. The oaddle shifters are useley, i have them in my car and I hate them.
For this to be a $70+k Honda value vehicle it should have added another 30 + hp, all in all it’s good, but Honda can do better 355 hp in a sport performance suv in todays world is on the low end of the spectrum
Agreed it should have more power, especially when BMW is widely known to underrate their power figures. 355 hp sounds competitive with an X5/X7 (I6 trim) but the X5 is considerably quicker than this. Of course some of that is because Acura mounts their engine transversely instead of the proper orientation (longitudinally). Why? Because something else that is widely known is that (and this is a generality) the transmissions just aren't as strong, at least in part because they are compromised by the packaging requirements. I know Acura says they strengthened the gear set but I'd bet the ECU is pulling timing in 1st/2nd gear to avoid damage. Go ahead now and tell me I'm wrong; I can take it.
Performance in my eyes really comes down the way power in a car is delivered and the handling. Even for a family-sized SUV; the car feels like it was made to handle more aggressive driving. And the acceleration is definitely there. All of the horsepower is available to you before you hit 3000RPM.
Great balanced review, Miles. I will demonstrate how to use the True Touch system for you to make it less frustrating.
Dude complain about audio system when experts rank It one of the best
After seeing this video I could 100% see you become the next big car UA-camr. Awesome commentary, def wanna see more of these

Comparing an SUV to a sports car? First all round negative review on this vehicle

Best 3rd row SUV luxury vehicle you can find.

The ITS will essentially be a modern RSX Type S just with two more doors and a lot more horsepower
The RSX was a rebadged DC5 Integra. So the current Integra Type S is the modern day RSX Type S.

curious how the MDX Type S could even be compared to the X7? at what level are you comaring it, can you go more in depth?

😂Mans said automotive bbl
I daily drive a MDX and can say touchpad is crap and never got the wireless charger to work
"A lil automotive BBL" 😂... Grade A review btw, you're killing it!

If you plan to keep it the price is reasonable. Consider the GS-F
Not everyone’s poor
First time seeing the sound system of mdx type s being criticized.
Clean videos man every time you upload a full length video I watch it wherever I am

Lmao you’re “on the fence” with this car for the price but you’re always the first to watch and comment on every MDX Type S video.

My phone works every time in the MDX

Comparisons to suvs 10 to 15 grand more is unfair
Feature to feature
The Germans cannot compete
Besides
You lease a German car and buy a Japanese car
😂 yes I love it I want one and it is reliable it’s a Honda

For me, you hit the nail on the head at the end there. The used market is where this may have more value.

Thanks for the review, I was going to purchase one until I saw your vid…stay with my x5
I was going to buy one for my mom, but the touchpad and push-button gear selectors were a deal breaker.
Question, what’s your definition of performance? Anything that Honda makes is not performance except the NSX, which they don’t make anymore

@@CarswithMiles what do you mean when you say the way the power is delivered to the car? Isn’t that done through the transmission?
So the civic type r?
That would be a bmw sir
good content and love from Pakistan
love that brand
