  • The Belmont Festival at Saratoga is in the books. We'll do it all again next year. For now Geo Sette reflects on the running of The Belmont Stakes at Saratoga Race Course. It was one heck of a weekend with some great racing. If you missed it we had Danny Gargan, the trainer of Belmont winner Dornoch on the show and also Luis Saez who rode him. Heck we had everyone!
    Thank you for watching ‪@PastTheWireTV‬

    Geo, your thoughts on each horse are what make the info you provide so valuable. I come to my own conclusions after listening and sometimes they are not the same as yours, but I wouldn't have got there without your input. Thanks enjoy your shows immensely.

    I’d just like to say thank you to John, I’m still learning with handicapping, and try to absorb every bit of info I can get on a horse. I took what he said to heart -“Trust your own eyes” and my eyes kept seeing Dornoch as a contender. I kept wondering if I was seeing something different when it came to him, with so many tossing him after the Bluegrass. When I watched Sierra I saw too many problems for him to overcome and win ( himself being his biggest). I just always remembered the Remsen and the heart that Dornoch showed. I will always appreciate Past the Wires invaluable information, but that phrase will stick with me, Trust your own eyes. My eyes saw a winner and they were right! Much love ! 😘

    Geo: I do a lot of harness and I'm surprised you guys would key a horse you know is gonna be 8/5 and sit dead last. I can't bet horses like that in a competitive race. No tactical speed for position, no control of pace, traffic issues, running against a front end bias that day I believe, lugs in. Sure, he got pinched at the break but you could see on the turn he was dead. Some other capper popped up here on You Tube, Speed King, and he nailed Dornock to the freaking wall as his longshot play for the exact reasons you mentioned. He did a whole video on Dornock. Anyway, I asked Jon before the race about this lack of early speed for SL and if CB would alter training methods to get him to sit closer and he said probably not. No reservations about loading up on deep closers that are the chalk??

      Tom, thanks for chiming in, I appreciate tour comment, Trust me, I'm always more comfortable knowing my horse is on the pace or sitting in the cat-bird seat as a stalker/presser, as you know, there are numerous contributing factors, Please don't dismiss who Sirera Leone had already defeated, and like I shared, inches away from being 5 for 5 , Regally Bred to be a champ, and so on, his numbers were top shelf too and he appeared to be sitting on his VERY best race, he was fresh too, oh and trust me, my stomach was turnign when Donoch disposed of Seize The Gray, who by the way I dismissed entirely, and I loved he was 5-1, felt so many people took the hook with that guy, but I saw Luis take him into the stretch, I knew he was lasting, as a handicapper, we need to be decisive and yeah, make some adjustments along the way, I don't have the time at this moment, but I can list a ton of colts and fillies over the years that won from way back 10 times in their career, and yeah at the same time, they lost some because of the inevitably traffic/trip issues, part of the game, the was SL and Honor Marie were training and know that the pace would be honest, you knew they would make their runs, finished 3rd and 4th , short of 1st and 2nd, if it was a mile and a half, then first and 2nd, but it was what it was, I knew in my bones Dornoch had a big race coming, I was hoping he hit the board here, he ended up taking all the money, and aside from Saez and his greatness, I could never be decisive, with taking him in a race to beat SL I felt SL was the ONLY horse in the race that could win this Belmont by open lengths

    Wonderful job getting it down to 6 horses! And cashing $350 super for $36 (6 horse 10 cent box)...9-1 ! As a Mom of Horseplyers I applaud you. Keep in mind if you could only have eliminated 1 more Animal and bet a 30 cents 5 horse Superbx, same cost $36....you get back over $1,000! Or close to 30 to 1!..Wonderful work. Best of luck

    I enjoy learning from you guys… listening to your rationale has made it easier for me to understand what to look for in the stats … make sense of all the data … that being said, if not for Jon’s continued emphasis on trusting our own opinion and how he puts more value in watching the prior races vs the numbers. When I watched Dornoch’s races this year, it seemed logical that the stats reflected the trips he had, easy field off a long layoff - no need to do more than he did, the other races he was backed up on top of the horses in front of him - rated hard etc…not a true reflection of his ability - felt that he would have a trip eventually if he stayed sound. Anyways - if not for Jon’s advice to stick with your own opinion I would not have won the pick 5 … I stuck with 3 of the picks from the Belmont seminar and chose Book em Dano and Dornoch because I thought they were better than their numbers - based on who they beat or were in contention with vs this field… anyways - thanks again!

    Thank you for the show Geo really appreciate it! As you and Jon always say horses will humble you! I was completely wrong in the Belmont Stakes. Looking @ the thorograph numbers and replay dornoch was just too slow and never really developed coming into the race he ran 6-6 and a 11 he never went passed his 2 year old numbers! I was high on Sierra Leone and Resilience, Sierra Leone had a beautiful pattern and was fast enough to win the race ( I think the track bias costed Sierra Leone big time). Resilience also had a beautiful pattern coming in I was expecting a big effort from this horse coming in on paired 4’s major disappointment he doesn’t wanna go this distance or just didn’t fire at all. I would have never gotten to dornoch so congrats to everyone who cashed in. My underneath horses also didn’t 🔥 as well in Antiquarian & The Wine Steward. I played a Sierra Leone & resilience exacta Box, 🔑 Sierra Leone with Resilience,Antiquarian & the wine steward. I only played Mindframe & honor Marie for tri/superfecta. Great learning experience will get them next time take care Geo.

      Rodney, I'm delighted to see your chime in, very much appreciated, hey we roll with the punches and stay grounded to our handicap, and yes, sometimes we make a game-time adjustment, however in this dance, for numerous reasons and compensating factors, I could not get passed Siera Leone, Trust me, when they turned for home and Donoch already disposed of Seize The Gray and Irad was looming on the outside, I knew in my blood and bones based on their strides, they were home, SL closed well especially after the 16th pole, however obviously too late. No worries, we have plenty of good eaten fish on the horizon , stick to your handicap and absorb as much as you can along the way....see ya on the next show here at past the Wire TV

    Where watching two different races… and I get that you dont bite the hand that feeds you .. but i trusted my eyes , and what i saw is they went after SL like he won the first two legs and he was bidding for a triple crown … Gaff went right after him out of the gate . But the 7 blocked him .. and the entire back stretch . Gaff keep sl wide or was directly in front of him . The turn ..that was no accidental bump … and if you had the 10 you had to go crazy . Because oritiz was drifting out waiting for SL instead of collaring the winner .like hes does in 99.9% of his races.. The only good thing is Repole loss as well

      Anthony, Thanks for chiming in with your comment, I have watched the race several times, and to your point, perhaps there was some bad blood by Tyler and his intentions against Siera Leone, but I didn't want to start in that direction, I watched it again a few times last night, and I failed to mention on my show that The Wine Steward had some horse, but Manny Franco was indecisive a few times, and tried a few lanes where there was no room, after a few attempts, he couldn't ask any longer and he was taken back, I did share that NO DOUBT in my mind , as I mentioned on this show Siera Leone's beginning momentum was halted some by that bumped of tyler and protective, as for the start, it sucks, we always want a clean break and he stumbled too, regardless to all that had happened, Dornoch and Mindframe ran better than everyone else, and they finished 1-2, if Mindframe doesn't drift as much as he did, he wins, and if the race is 12 furlongs, a Mile and 1/2, SL wins & wins easy, PS: if Ken McPeek runs Thorpedo Anna in the Belmont instead of the Akorn with the gals, they way she ran, she wins

      That's fabulous! Congrats & thanks for chiming in, Trust me, I wish I could get past Siera Leone, I just couldn't, so he was my key with many wagers, as I shared in this video, he closed well the final 1/16th, but had those issues earlier on and credit Luis to keep to the task at hand while the #10 drifted out, Irad brought him back in, if he doesn't drift, he likely wins, additionally, If McPeek runs Thoropedo Anna in the Belmont and not the Acorn, she could have beat the boys... I felt it in my bones that Saez would win with this horse soon, this year, just was sold with him strictly underneath, but after he kept with Seize The Gray, I knew he was passing him and STG would fall back, and that he would fight to the finish, Hats off to you for being decisive on Donoch, on the win end, I just couldn't we all face it as handicappers often, others were training better & had the look of moving forward , You hot that Triple Mutiple times, that's sweet, Capital for the full summer season,

PS: If Mcpeek Runs Thorpedo Anna vs the Boys, not Mystik Dan, based on her run in the Acorn, she would have beat this field, lastly, as I mentioned and you know, SL did not have a good overall trip and was running fastest late, after the 1/16th pole

      Hi and thanks for chiming in, I guess you didn't understand what I was sharing, regardless to the class of the race, if the field is 10, 11, 12 or more horses, you need to extend your handicap, create opportunities for your deeper gimmicks, MOST IMPORTANTLY, if you feel based on your full handicap of the race, you feel they can hit the board as a contender, especially so if you feel based on your handicap a particular horse will be an overlay, the Odds on the board dictate how you bet your deeper gimmicks, like a superfecta, You don't know me, nobody you will ever met has played more ICE COLD exactas for a big number, even ice cold triples and superfectas, I start with that, because If I execute a perfect top 4 handicap, I'm getting paid, then I look at others who MADE my handicap, my 5th, 6th or 7th consideration, that's if they were, if my 6th choice in a 11 horse field is 44-1 on the board, why wouldn't I use him in my triples and superfectas? Capeech? there are many moving parts, many contributing factors, depends on the race, and 100 other conditions, if you're a seasoned guy, you know what I mean, if you're not, trust me you will learn with time

  • @pualdupvandoff8199
    @pualdupvandoff8199 2 місяці тому +3

    Boxing 6 horses in the super is a long term strategy to the poor house. You didnt have him picked to win. Stop it..
    We can all see that he could win, after the race.
    Everybody and their mother had Sierra Leone to win, with half the field behind him in the super, in some configuration.
    SL was a bad bet, especially given the way the track was playing, and his odds.

    • @geo7settePastTheWire
      @geo7settePastTheWire 2 місяці тому

      Thanks for chiming in, You will never meet anyone bettor or handicapper that typically bets more ICE COLD superfectas, I won't sneeze at putting $10 or $20 straight up, based on my handicap, but I'm no dummy, as I shared in this video, If i complete my handicap in a big field, and I go 6 or even 7 deep with what i feel are contenders for different reasons, then it's about being smart, if half of your handicap, 3 of your 6 considered, are on the board at 10-1+ 15-1+ or even greater, after you ahve placed your straight wagers, I box makes sense as you can lose a photo, or another horse can fail to fire or 100 others things, in the case of this Belmont, it fit perfectly, and for every dime or $36 wager, you collect $320, 50 cent = $1600, on a $180 bet, a great way to recover losses if your top horse doesn't get it done and you lose all your multiples too, I'm not talkign about "Throw ins" I'm talking about horses that made my handicap and are clearly being dismissed by the public, I play more Super Key's than anyone you know, but at the same time, I have cashed countless Superfect box wages, which at times adds to my winning on top of hitting my Super Key in the same race, but if shit goes wrong, bang, you get your money back, 3 months ago, I hit a $17,000 super, collected $1,700 on a small 36.00 wager, no reach, I boxed 6 , felt anyone of they could win, or that 3 of my horses were BIG overlays in my eyes, so if they hit the board , I get paid, you say go to the poorhouse? playing 6 to get 4 on the board isn't too much of a reach if you are confident in your ways, then of course you need racing luck, dont we all know it, so much shit can go wrong and will go wrong

      Frank, although it was a rough trip for sure, but not worthy of a stewards inquiry, it's part of racing , happens all the time, at least those two incident's, did his stumble and those bumps effect SL? no doubt , you always want a clean trip, he closed great in the final 1/16th, however he lugged in again some too

    Honor Marie was FOURTH, did not ' hit the board' as you state here. Believe me, I understand it's easy to confuse when recommending 6 Horse Superboxes. Since you loved Siera, 2gs to show was $600 profit..boom. thanks for your hard work. Sorry you whiffed Triple Crown

      if you're playing Superfectas, 4th IS hitting the board, Yeah, there's no payout as in WIN, PLACE & SHOW, that's the board on those plays, Obviously the board mentioned here is strictly towards superfecta considerations, thanks for watching and chiming in

    Geo, SL didn’t win the race not because of the bump or wide trip..this horse is among horse of the year but he does not carry the it factor as an elite horse. This horse has a history of lugging in and not being able to run straight down the stretch. With that said, I see him as G3 horse at best. I feel for ur loss though.

      Chuck, thanks for chiming in, comments always embraced and appreciated, I didn't make an excuse for SL, just sharing those obstacles, yes, halfway thru age 3 and now 6 races, the lugging in needs to stop, his dad Gun Runner was a real pro, however you simply cannot dismiss his talent, I must disagree with you in saying he's G3 caliber only, he will win some big races this year, save this

    Sierra Leone could have won with a better jockey or his regular jockey on board. Prat moved too late. He rides well Favorite Front Running Speed Horses BUT is not a good jock on a Closer. I hope Brown is eating oats all week. He made a big mistake. Thank U Geo for your honest thoughts on the best jocks, but I dont agree. Cheers.

    I think Sierra Leone got screwed big-time Sandwiched at the gate N then around the turn Protective drifted a few times into Sierra Leone which he definitely lost ground But at the Gate Mindframe and Number 8 definitely sandwiched him why wasn't there a inquiry they just didn't want him to win Then Protective drift into him and bumps him a few times basically cutting him off He still almost pulled it off Closing very hard and fast if race was usual mile and a half Sierra Leone wins going away He's better than Dornach Mindframe Torpedo Ann all of them He will be BK n Prove to all you doubters But Chad Brown made a huge mistake switching jockeys Tyler Gafflione knew the horse won 2 times and lost twice by a nose Why would you switch jockeys Pratt didn't know the horse He waited to long to make his move n lost out of ground But he will be BK

      That's your choice, you know your numbers, the best of luck to you and thanks for chiming in, I know I listen carefully to people that know the sport and understand all the contributing factors, it matters to me, I absorb, lots, however I will not come off my own opinion, even still I respect competent information I'm listening to, there are many variables and contributing factors, and how you actually bet, conservative or you thrive on exotics and gimmicks, same race or muti-race, window decisions overall

    I never go 6 deep for win. narrow to 3 horses . then to 1/2 horses. cant do this , can't handicap at all. or have ton of money to lose .knew beat sl. then backed horse off for conditioning. fools who don't what talking about said never beat sl..again. nonsense in any moral mind. Doorknocker told yous beat siera Leone again. sure laughing. caught up in trainer and connections to much. of course trainer tell you gone win. all done. don't listen nonsense. not 5/5 fact. green horse knew allways finds and gets in trouble. no excuses! never but such green horse like him. handicapping for decades, easy to see sierra Leone head case. needs mature. Live and learn.Knowledge is king and cash. loved mindframe but lugged out, ok horses greenest , accept itm doorknocker was just sharp and mature for race

      Tim, thanks for offering your input and comments, the 6-deep approach in a field of 10+ is NOT for the win, it's for deeper gimmicks like the triple and superfecta, especially if the horses genuinely make your overall handicap and they are clearly an overlay in your mind, coming into the race SL clearly based on performance and progression was the best 3 year old, him lugging in a known issue, even still his talent alone and the way he's bred to win at the distance was enough to be decisive, trust me, I saw Dornoch's potential and I have the highest regard for Saez, but I had to look at the whole picture

    SL a bit overrated,can't run straight,has to race 8 wide or he crashes into other horses..never saves ground.

      FWIW, I think his problem is physical. There's a reason why he lugs in. A lot of announcers make it sound like it's mental, but in general a horse not running perfectly straight is usually due to pain or to a lesser extent conformation.

    • @user-zt3hx1co8n
      @user-zt3hx1co8n 2 місяці тому +2

      SL has bad habits, or indeed physical issues. Does he have joint pain, bone pain, lack stamina and therefore lug in? Chad has not run him on the outside in training, he is always SEEN running on the rail, how does that help him LEARN not to LUG IN if it is mental? They changed the equipment, and the jockey and it didn't solve his issues. I say change the trainer. And have him checked at Emory Riddle.

      @@daniel_moretti Sierra does a weird paddling action on his front legs when he closes ground and accelerates. This conformation issue and motion seems to cause him to lug in towards the the inside. Watch his blue grass or derby, his fronts in the stretch. This is the way the moves the ground in front of him and I guess it tilts his body and motion. Not a mental issue but just how his legs work.
