I've stop using "the best" and "the worst" a long time ago as there is always someone to disagree. I now use "I like", "I prefer", and "I dislike". It's always a question of perception and beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Well said my friend
@@woodworkingwithSkyler apakah kamu orang Rusia?
The Carnauba wax, for example, made the wood look so beautiful, I think. I loved the darker color, that it provided, for the wood. Your custom made box is so beautiful. That is so cool.
I commented before completing the video. I must say, you do excellent work for a "beginner" woodworker as you stated in one the video.
Thank you very much!
Hi Skyler, it's Grover again, I HAD to make this follow up comment about the 3 products I purchased from your store. I ordered these immediately after watching this video. My order arrived quickly and all 3 products are amazing . I am a long time subscriber and woodworker myself.
Hi Skyler, awesome battle of the waxes video. My go to wax that I use for my furniture restoration work is called Howards Feed-n-wax, it's made with orange oil and bee's wax and it's in the big box stores. Loved how your wax looked too!
Will check it out. Thanks
I just found your channel, recently. I'm very impressed with your skills. Thank you for all of the great videos! And thanks for this great wax comparison. That box is BEAUTIFUL!
Thank you so much, and welcome to the channel
Great job. Thank you 😊
Thank you too!
Hi Skyler , it's Grover. That was clever marketing , I went to your store and bought a can of your homemade Carnauba wood polish . You will now know my REAL name , Grover was my Grandfather. I have 2 recipe boxes to make for a couple of my family members , I'll use your wax on them.
Hi “Grover “ thank you for purchase. Will ship them today! Use in top of an other finish
@@woodworkingwithSkyler 😊 Thanks , I hope you have a productive day
Thanks for this vid.. I was going to use wax on a project but this showed me it's great for boxes and some things.. but not the effect I'm going for on a turntable. Great vid .
Hi Skyler, I liked your comparison for the waxes. My go to is Tung oil or bees wax. I have to agree yours do look good. Just as good as Ac's. It may have been the light yours seem to have the best sheen. The renaissance wax may be more for protection and finger prints for the handling. Thanks for the video looking forward to the next one. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thank you Roy. I really appreciate it
Grab a scissors sharpener from fiskars. It works beautifully and is often on sale for under $15. You can get most pairs of scissors razor sharp really easily, but not some wider forged scissors. As long as the blades are snug and not chipped, they end up better than new.
Skyler, that box is gorgeous! I just love the design of the canary wood top. Did you make a video of how you made it? I definitely want to see it.
Coming soon!
I really enjoyed this comparison! And, when you polished your small box, that made it look special. But...
I'm wondering what kind of finish you applied to the box...and the strips of wood used for the comparison. Maybe you told us, but I forgot.
For the box finish I used arm r seal. The walnut strips of wood were bare sanded wood, no finish
i agree yours with cardoba and axe
THANK YOU!
You're welcome!
Hey! Good job on video btw! As a wood turner I prefer AcKS because it’s food safe for bowl turnings. However I do not just add waxes to any wood! I make my own sanding sealer if you would like my recipe let me know. So the sealer coats into the wood and seals end grain as well as long grain. Then I use wax but only a high grade bees wax. The wax doesn’t last for a long time. So customers need to add wax preferably the same type after 6-8 months to preserve the wood grain. Just a bit of info here. My preferred method for finishing is withe the sealer and then use shellac or varnish! ✌🏼🪵💫🚀
Thank you. Awesome. Yes, I would love your sanding sealer recipe. I been mixing shellac flakes with denatured alcohol 1 to 3 ratio
@@woodworkingwithSkyler Here it is simple but shellac needs to be at a 5 to 1 ratio. In a 6 ounce bottle which I get from Hobby Lobby in the oil painting area of the store. 1/3 shellac 1/3 boiled linseed oil 1/3 denatured alcohol! You can google O.B.Shine juice been around for along time. This is totally food safe. Like I said it penetrate and seals grain waxes do not.
@@douglasperry1226 awesome. Thank you so much Douglas
Is the shellac already mixed or 1/3 of bottle flakes?
@@woodworkingwithSkyler I should be using flake and make my own cut but takes time for flakes to dissolve. I use Zinder from Box store it at a five pond cut ratio. 5:1
Renaissance wax is best applied to a finished surface rather than raw timber. I use this on musical instruments as it provides a barrier to resist fingerprinting and prevents tarnishing of metal surfaces.
I agree. I was just going off on Rob Cosman video
Skyler, have you ever gone to Rare Woods in Mexico, Maine? They have a tremendous amount of rare woods (obviously) and some from just about every corner of the globe. Last time I was there I picked up some Lignum Vitae. Hope to make a box or two and a few pens from that purchase.
Hi Gary! No , never heard of this place before. I should look it up! Thank you
I ranked them the same as you did:
5. Minwax, 4. Renaissance, 3. your's with mineral Oil, 2. Acks, AND AT #1, your's with pure tung oil.
Nice stuff, great presentation. I really like that you done take so long to say what you need to say like many other men and women. I think they are thinking more about themselves and not the information and the audience.
You are new to me. I will have to check and see if you have a video of you making your wax, OR see if you sell it. I really like it.
I wonder if it would work with 0000 steel wool to rub out a gloss finish.
you can now purchase my finishes ar www.skylerewing.store . Next time I make a new batch, will make sure to film it and share it with you guys
I like your wax best. I'm going to make some.
Please do! It’s so easy to! Just 2 ingredients. An oil of your choice and a wax . Ratio 4 to 1. For the carnuba wax I added just a bit more oil as this wax is harder then beeswax and wanted softer to be able to hand rub. Use a crockpot, it’s safer. If you heat tung oil directly on stove, it can self combust
Thank youverey much for ansering me
Any time
the wax which is your favorite is better than the new wax
Thank you Igor
Good video, very informative. Have you used Rubio Monocoat? It's a hard wax finish, and I've used it on tables, along with a ceramic polish.
Yes, I have. It’s one of my favorite. I have it on my white oak flooring in my house in color chocolate, I used it in the bed built video I did and I use it on every piece of furniture I made for my house ( desk and shelves). Mostly in pure color ( which is clear):)
WHERE DO I BUY YOUR SAWDUST BRAND WAX. I'M INTERESTED THE FINISH IT CREATED WITH, BEES WAX AND TUNG OIL. THANKS
Www.skylerewing.store
Hi styler great vid very informative. What ratio do you use for your tune oil mix please. Many thanks. I liked that finish better than the others
I use 4 to 1. The liquid I measured in liquid measuring cups and the wax I weigh on scale. For the carnuba wax I added just a little more oil as this wax is harder and I wanted softer to be able to hand rub. I think I added 2 extra oz of oil per 1 oz of wax. If you don’t like the results just heat it up again and add wax or oil. Use a crockpot if you use tung oil. If you heat it directly on stove it can self combust
@@woodworkingwithSkyler thanks think I try 4oz oil to 1oz wax and see how I go. Then like you say I can add more if needed.
I use nothing but Acks! Hands down, bar none, the absolute best!!!
Acks is great
Good video. Thank you.
Glad you liked it!
Motor boat!
Thanks!
Hello Frank! Thank you for your generosity
@woodworkingwithSkyler no worries sky.. next month will be better.. your doing great young lady
Save the Minwax for your table saw/ bandsaw. Works great on those, and have heard they no longer make it. Funny thing about finishes- we all have something that works for Us. Maybe how we apply, how much we use, level of sanding, or what we want to see as a finished surface. Great demo, but I will stick to what works for me. IE- Tom Fidgeon (unplugged workshop) swears by Tried and True. I don’t like the look. Spent a lot of money buying other people’s favorites
Great point! I have all the tried and true finishes…. Some of them are good
What do you use for finish
Arm R Seal
you did not test the first one right what you did when you put it on and it said
buff right away you kept rubbing with wax after the first app. you should have used a clean dry cloth for buffing it will not work like your wax.
I don’t think you applied the Renaissance correctly. I use it all the time for lathe turned items. First apply walnut oil and allow to dry to a hard state in a couple days. Then buff, using the Bealle buffing system and finally apply the Renaissance wax. It gets a great durable sheen.
I will try that. Thank you
interesting :)
Just ordered your entire line. You are so special. How about a signed business card in the order? Priceless! Order #00009
Thank you so much for your purchase and your support. I will put it in the mail tomorrow. We use to be kind of neighbors:) I used to live in Wilmette, Illinois
First three look so close the same, hard to see any difference. Last 2 would not use
I agree
The whole point of being wax used by museum is to protect surface without changing original appearance not making my box looking nice, isn't? ;) Thanks for your effort in comparing those waxes.
That is a very good point. I didn’t think of that. I think I was just going base on Rob Cosman review. He said he uses it as the only finish on small boxes. He apply it and immediately buffed
The worst one is the Minwax, AS USUAL! THEY SUCK AT EVERYTHING. WHY DO RETAILERS EVEN SELL THAT CRAP? Your two and the middle one by far the best. Good video!
Thank you
What finish would you use first?
I would use an oil finish as I love oil finishes. Wax is amazing in top of shellac as well. You can also use it on top of poly and other varnishes for a nicer touch. Make the wood feel nicer and less like plastic
Ice watched Rob for years.. he is really really overpriced! Canadians rip you off.. use hard wax
