In this video, I briefly cover Coates clear sewing thread as an inexpensive alternative to "official" fly tying thread. This thread may not be fly tying thread but it is a great thread for tying streamer flies for many fish species. I have two spools of this line, in both clear and smoke. I transferred some onto an old empty spool and also to a sewing machine bobbin. I have found it at Walmart as well as all local craft stores.
Another good product I found is metallic embroidery floss. It’s bulky right from the package but can be broken down into individual or groups of strands.
Nice! You can always find great stuff for tying in craft stores and Wal-Mart. I like the metallic embroidery floss idea. I bet that would be great for trout and salmon flies!
Ive used this .005 Coats and Clark for tippet material. Tricos and midges.
Coats also has some great colors in "normal" thread that I have used in nymph bodies. Size 18/20 I use a single strand, size 16 i'll make a dubbing loop but leave it empty, cording up a double strand. Those bodies come out segmented without ribbing.
After watching your video I ordered 3 spools of this from Walmart. Been tying with it for a week now.
It is my preferred thread for clear. There are times when I want a smaller, more flexible colored thread. But I do find myself using it a lot. Thanks for the heads up!

This video helps me out a lot, because I need to replace all of my fly-tying hooks and threads. My house has a history of flooded basement issues, and the last time it flooded I had to throw out all of my hooks, threads and tinsels because the tackle box I kept them in filled up with raw sewage and storm water! Probably $1K worth of items in that single box!

I been using embroidery thread for many of my jigs,never used the clear.They come in dozens of colors and 3-4 sizes (weights).I spool my own bobbins with from 5000yd spools via bolt and nut through the bobbin and attached to a cordless drill.
On some jigs I just use it for the body material.I also use it all the time to add a base to CA glue rubber baits to the shank and/or add a weedless guard from #40+ mono.

I've used this stuff for years. Excellent for streamers and for streamer heads where you add eyes and then use some form of clear resin. Doesn't show up underneath, which is great.
What is the barcode for this thread? I see it is missing during the video.
@@alexsummersell3567 don't know the bar code (its rubbed off) - but this is the stuff I've been using - it's available from fabric shops or sections = Coats & Clark Nylon Monofilament Clear Transparent Thread, 300 Yd.
The 'Coats Thread' is a lot more expensive in the UK!
Great idea, but I have a question for you & any others that may use this mono thread. In your video the thread you are showing looks to be on a spool that is the same size ( length & diameter ) as the normal thread we all buy for tying flies. I just went to Walmart & picked up a clear & black of this monofilament thread @ $2.44 a spool. The spools are bigger than the normal tying thread spools ( the ones I got are 1 3/4" long with 300 yds of thread ) . Did you have to get a different bobbin to use this thread ?? If so, where did you get find one that would fit the bigger spool ?? Also, I am wondering if the manufacturer may have changed the spool since your video was made 2 years ago. I've used those sewing thread spools on a normal bobbin just fine, might have to bend the arms out a bit though.

What about tiny lures. I tie size 16 hooks and normal thread leaves it looking bigger then it should
Great video, brand new to this sport and anything that can save some money on the initial set up is awesome. You mentioned that the thread would be a bit slippery to wrap or tie due to the missing wax, so couldn’t you just add some wax to the thread?? Or is that a stupid question, once again, new guy here.
You could if you needed but I meant it more for tyers who are used to thread with wax. Just knowing this thread is slick and can shift will help you make adjustments in your tying when using this thread. It bites into both natural and synthetic materials well!
For sure dude. I started with waxed threads because my buddy who taught me used them. I’ve slowly transitioned into using mono threads and GSP almost exclusively (thinner diameters, both are stronger, and it keeps cost down). If I need a colored head, I’ll use floss, colored nail polish, and sometimes traditional flat thread.
Point is, I’d forgotten about wax, and really had never used it much outside of threads that are prewaxed… until I was sucked in to the UA-cam rabbit hole in a sitting and saw two videos one after the other, with Davie McPhail and Kelly Galloup/Slide Inn both hammering down on the fact that we’ve all forgotten about wax… to our detriment…
I got a couple different types on a whim. My tying advanced by years about a week in to it after some heavy tying sessions trying to experiment.
I tell everybody, especially us young cats, use wax! It’ll change your trying game!
I've been using this stuff for a couple years now. The newer version of this thread (pink colored spool) is very brittle and the actual thickness is not stated on the spool.
@@theflyguytfgflies that thread is good for making extended body mayflies . I start using polyester at first then i used nylon and my patterns came out a lot cleaner. Thread makes a big difference.
@@theflyguytfgflies somethings i just cant resist buying from fly shops like dubbing and wings lol. I haven't tried none of the uni or utc thread yet . I started tying with regular sewing thread out of boredom now im hooked. The transparent nylon threads works great
@@theflyguytfgflies i know im get off subject a bit but i just started building my own fiberglass fly rods and by accident i put a tip top loop my fly rod and i glued it on at about the at a 5 oclock position instead of the four o clock position and my casting is a lot futher and straighter than with my store brought fly rods i guess with it being crooked like that it helps take some of the looping out of the slack in the line

@@theflyguytfgflies thank god im know to be a little tinkerer i even put wider snake guide and a big stripping guide on it i used a 10mm stripping guide.

How does it work for dubbing or using a dubbing loop?
It does well for both and really works well with a dubbing loop as it twists tight and holds. I use synthetic dubbing blends so you might want to test it with natural fibers and see how you like it. I hope that helps!
