This song rules. This album is so important in 90s alternative metal. And Danny Carey is one of the greatest drummers ever. So glad you enjoyed this song Dave! You should do “Eulogy”! This song kills it!
Good analogy. Let’s go American football with it. Lol. Put that ball where you expect him to be in .5 seconds, not where he is right now. A well oiled machine is hard to stop. These guys are too good on several levels ✌️
Always one of (if not my #1) my favorite tool reviewer/reactor people out there!! Your pure enjoyment dissecting tool songs is infectious brother!! Always puts me in such a great mood! Thank you! 🙏
The concept of "Arizona Bay" was co conceived by Maynard and Bill Hicks. (Who the album is dedicated to.) Maynard has taken it to heart so much he moved to Jerome, Arizona. Just in case he's right 😆
From what I remember. Justin joined before the recording of the album and wrote half the basslines. The old bassist Paul wrote the other half of the lines but left before the recording of the album.
That is so interesting. The way you said it felt soothing (even “like being in your mother’s arms”), your comments on Maynard’s vocals (active follower vs being ahead of the curve); you kind of got the meaning of the song without the lyrics. Not everything, but the basic gist. Cool.
For all the people that give you crap about the counting, I figured out in one of your recent reviews why it makes sense to you. You are with counting the way I am with lyrics and probably the way many people are. The song doesn't make sense to me until I hear, know, and interpret the lyrics. The music, I just tend to go with what is happening and either just like what I hear or not, without analyzing it too much. So, I get it. It's what you know best and what you think about the most when listening or playing. I think about the words I hear or their meaning when I'm listening or singing, as an amateur singer.
New subscriber here! Really enjoying your reviews bro! Well thought out, interesting, and about the actual music and not some side tangent about something completely unrelated. Looking forward to many many more!
@@lenni-hazelsI don’t think the genre affects whether it’s dark or not that much here. Lateralus isn’t in one of the dark genres of metal (like death metal or black metal), it’s more of an atmospheric post-metal. Lyrically and atmospherically, Aenima is much darker. The darkest parts of Lateralus are just creepy or mysterious (other than I guess Ticks and Leeches, but that’s more angry than dark imo), whereas Aenima has that + an added layer of torturedness and vitriol.
Man I love your reactions and I love how you do them. I also accept the math thing that you need to do to be able to enjoy a song. I always did accept it, I always accepted your ways and I always gave a like. But when hearing your reaction to this specific song and you dont even give one swirling single fck about anything but the time signatures Im like...what are you doing? We are all born with flaws. This song is all about it.
@@THEDavidHeretic Yeah, Dave. I didn’t mean to sound “uvuncular”…..It was just to educate some of your audience. I didn’t even know it was a word, until not long ago. You gave a good channel, Bro.
First part is true and second not. He basically wrote the main riff idea of 46 & two, which they then made into the song. And there were like 3 demos written before he joined (Eulogy, Stinkfist and one other I believe).
Counting a tool song is like watching football and just watching to see if they hike the ball on one or two every play. I appreciate your skill and enthusiasm but please… please do yourself a favor… sit down and listen again for the message. We’ll see you down in Arizona Bay.
Bro ya have to check out Jinjer. They are a Ukrainian progressive metal core band that blends many genres into their heaviness. The general introduction is Jinjer Pisces the live session but that is about a 4 for Jinjer. For you I'd suggest Jinjer Pit of Consciousness live in Kiev it's an 11 out of 10 preference.
Love this song! David, I’m sure you can relate to some of these lyrics being you’re on the west coast (even though the song is 27 years old, it all sadly still applies and has probably only gotten worse). Some of my favorite lyrics: “Here in this hopeless f***ing hole we call L.A. The only way to fix it is to flush it all away Any f***ing time, any f***ing day Learn to swim, I'll see you down in Arizona bay” “F**k L. Ron Hubbard and F**k all his clones F**k all these gun-toting Hip gangster wannabes” “F**k retro anything F**k your tattoos F**k all you junkies and F**k your short memories” “F**k smiley glad-hands With hidden agendas F**k these dysfunctional Insecure actresses” 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
@@thepooz7205 I don't mind. But he didn't listen to a word at all. Is he always this way ? Not even feeling the music only busy, disecting the music in measures.
This song was about L.A but today it could easily be to the entire western world with its uber-woke crap...lol I was expecting a 9.2 minimum score, you low balled my expectation! 7:01 - This is why I am glad that all the instruments I know how to play (bass, drums, electric guitar, keys etc) I taught myself, bot learning how someone else tells me how to play it! I rarely count anything it just happens by feel or instinct...lol
One of the greatest songs ever written off one of the greatest albums ever. There is so much happening in this song its like everytime I listen to it I forget about a certain part, even though I’ve heard the song 200 times. They are unreal.
This song is a masterpiece.
Thank you so much for coming back to TOOL man
This song rules. This album is so important in 90s alternative metal. And Danny Carey is one of the greatest drummers ever. So glad you enjoyed this song Dave! You should do “Eulogy”! This song kills it!
Eulogy is probably my fav from this album. It's so quintessentially Tool
Definitely do eulogy!! The whole album is amazing, my favorites are H, Eulogy, and Push it, but yeah great reaction
This is in my top 3 Tool songs! Angry and aggressive; Maynard is fed up with the fake bullshit!! Love it!
So I’ve listened to this countless times over 25 years yet Dave listens to it once and teaches me things I didn’t know. Thanks David!
13:24 Maynard is the Wayne Gretzky of lyrical compositions: he doesn’t go where the puck is, he goes to where it is going to be.
Love that. 👍

Just saw tool Friday night at aftershock. Bad ass

They closed Aftershock this past Friday in Sacramento with this song, and I could not have been happier. ❤
The time signature is 12/8 (4 groups of 3 eighth notes) which sets up the 3 against 4 that Maynard is singing in.
Spiral Out
"Fuck L Ron Hubbard and fuck all his clones". Got to love Maynard's lyrics. He never minces his words, that's for sure...
The concept of "Arizona Bay" was co conceived by Maynard and Bill Hicks. (Who the album is dedicated to.)
Maynard has taken it to heart so much he moved to Jerome, Arizona. Just in case he's right 😆
The way you appreciate music puts a BIG smile on my face.
I LOVE how the lyrics are basically foretelling what’s going to happen to California in a few years 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
I need to know what happened... Is this another prediction like fear inoculum? I'm Canadian and I would have been a bit younger then
@@supervisedchaosbasically, Cali is a shithole, and its full of selfish pricks lol

Thanks for this reaction!I love this song and the whole album!good afternoon from Italy
When Dave says “…but actually the song is very simple,” for nearly every Tool song? Drink!
One of Tool’s most perfect pieces of music. So good. Love.
I like how you suggest waiting to like/sub/click things until after the reaction. I love what you do here ma dude.
FEELIN' YOU Demise!!!
They are touring now, check them out!
When you mentioned Maynards vocals, it dawned on me, that is the message of the song, I had just never picked up on it. Thanks for enlightening me

Loved this reaction love this song love this album only a couple left i believe... also this has Justin on bass this is where he started with the band
When I was younger, In order to figure this song out on the drums. I always went 3 over 2 . Great song

They performed this at Aftershock and it was fucking amazing!!!!
I thought Tool is not my thing at all because the album Lateralus was so gloomy and dark for me, but I really like this song.

Love how you burst out in laughter, not at the mention of “dumbfound dipsh*ts,” but at Danny’s drum roll right after

The song is in E. The opening riff starts in the second position on the guitar 3 low strings. E power chord in drop D
