  • The current labour shortage has reached epic proportions, with 114,000 vacancies predicted by 2025. It's only with the help of international farm workers that Canadian agriculture stands a chance.
This film tells the story of international farm workers who travel from a number of countries each year to work on Canadian farms, and the important relationship they have with our farmers.
It is no doubt that food production is hard work, and the international farm workers program makes it possible for many of our growers to meet the demands of consumers. While costs in agriculture are increasing, returns are not trending upwards. Due to the labour gap across the country, especially in horticulture, this program makes it so that the horticulture industry in Canada can survive and thrive.

Congratulations for this insightful video! It describes the mutual benefits for Canadian Agri & Food industry and TFW. I like the most is the clear mindset for both parties. Owners/Managers caring TFW and TFW caring products, companies and customers.

why don’t we allow the talented foreign farmworkers to become residents so that they can bargain for better wages or go work in the city if they want?

Ive been asking that same question for a long time, I am a foreign farm worker from Trinidad working in Canada since 2011 and I have been trying to stay legally since 2019 but it is very hard for someone like me to get permanent residence even though I pay taxes

@@yazeeit6183 i really hope it works out for you. it is unfortunately designed that way. even recently they created something called the “agri-food pilot” but reading the website it looks like seasonal workers are not eligible. but i don’t know. i’m no expert. ask around. best of luck!!!

This is the story we need to get out to the greater community where International Farm Workers are working at Canadian Farms. The local Economic Impact is of extreme importance and needs to be shared. The passion of the workers and farmers featured was compelling. Thank you to the CHC for producing this Video. Who do I contact for permission to show it at events? Thank you.

farmworkers who come on a work visa to Canada should be given a permanent resident status within 6 months. if they are happy to work 6 months in Canada and go back to Jamaica/Mexico for the other half of the year that's their choice. but today the way it's set up they are forced to go back every year. also the way it is set up because those talented hard working farm workers are not allowed to go get a job in the city, they have no bargaining power with their farmer employer, and therefore have to accept low low wages. and as long as the wages are low there will always be a labour shortage. it's a loop. i work in a warehouse that distributes food, i started at $14/hour and in less than 4 years i took on more responsibilities and earn $19/hr today. why would i ever take up farm work if i can earn $19/hr in the city. i'm also part of the food chain, my wages are paid by the consumer in the final retail price. why is it okay to pay me almost double the wages of the farm worker in southern ontario? this is not a fair or sustainable agricultural economy. the most pragmatic solution is keep inviting farm workers from Jamaica and Mexico, but also give them a real and easy pathway to citizenship, and allow them to bargain for better wages, and slowly the labour market will start to correct. we do this in literally every other industry. The vast majority of outdoor construction workers used to be foreign born; today a lot of foreign born immigrants still work as outdoor labourers on construction sites, but it's also very common for Canadian born people to work those jobs as well. it's clearly unfair to tell someone who has been coming here to pick veg for 15 years, has a lot of expertise and know-how to tell him no you cannot apply for a Canadian citizenship, and then if he says fine i don't want a citizenship i just want a raise, we tell him no can do because another foreign worker can do it cheaper. You see if he had resident status he can go to the city and get a warehouse job as a receiver in a heartbeat. It's not fair. Most of these workers have much more know-how than I have, and yet I make more than them even though we are part of the same industry. The only difference is i have a resident status. Not fair to them.

the foreign worker program that they are talking about in the video only applies to few countries in the Carribean like Mexico and Jamaica. As an Egyptian you cannot apply for this program. but you can try to apply for regular immigration at the Canadian Embassy. Unfortunately the regular immigration process places more value on university education than on agricultural experience.
