Great road trip video! Greetings from Texas. Enjoying my new MS Plaid that I got a few months ago and already made a few road trips. Tesla actually makes you want to do road trips 🙂
Thanks Ee Ping! My family shared their backseat experience in our California road trip videos last month. For long road trips (>3 hours), Model Y is a far better choice for back seat passengers (higher ride height, more leg room and width, fully unobstructed glass roof, HEPA filter, and a lot more storage space.
Question for you EV owners. Can you drive all the way from KL to JB or KL to Penang using the Plus highway during peak periods like Hari Raya or Chinese New Year holidays without running into charging problems? Cause even with ICE cars you have to que up at petrol bays along rest area & to fill petrol only takes around 3min, so what about EVs which takes very least 15min? Even if you replace all petrol bays with EV chargers, wouldn’t you need to wait for a long time?
Hi Darren, how did you get VEP..since Road tax in Malaysia for EV is waived until Dec 2025 and VEP application mandatory requirements is Road Tax among others? Can you advise
great video, but electric cars are less efficient in motorways journey(as with this case VS ICE cars) , would an ICE car be more efficient compared to a Tesla? Whats the average speed of trip or must you keep it under certain speed to conserve battery?e.g 90km/hr? would be great if you could include a comparison of the cost for entire journey VS a typical ICE VS typical hybrid.
Thanks for sharing! Charging doesn't seem difficult for road trips like yours. Sidetrack, any idea if the Model Y currently selling on Tesla Malaysia is on HW 3.0 or HW 4.0?
At what speeds were you travelling mostly during this trip..? Would you say mostly between 90-100km/h.. 100-110km/h.. or >110km/h..? I would assume that would make a big difference to the electricity consumption..? Thank you..
We were travelling at the right lane speed of North South Expressway. Travelling at 90km/h would be the most efficient (but takes you longer to reach your destination).
26:20 On 19th July 2023 (Wednesday), it was a public holiday for most states in the Peninsular Malaysia so people take extra days for holiday until 23rd July 2023 (Sunday) going back to their hometowns Hope that answers your queries.
Hi Daren, we are planning a road trip from SG to KL. This video is very useful! Can you pls share how to use the Tesla navigation system in M'sia and you mentioned something about wifi in the video? Greatly appreciate more details on that. Thanks.
You can buy your RFID at some Shell Stations before you enter NSE @RM35.0. For Johor destinations, charging at Ayer Keroh R&R would be cheaper (90kW x 2 units at RM1.00/kW using ChargeV)
Sometimes, it is about the journey and not about the destination. From my experience, it takes longer due to frequent stops to charge. However, I do feel less tired when I reach the destination. In my family, road trips are about spending time with each other, discovering new places, snacking and playing music from a playlist 😂.
end of the day its about options, with an ICE car you have the option to choose to stop as long or as short as you wish. With an EV you have no choice but to "spend extra time with each other" correct?
@@user-sf5bt8eb4y the longest distance I have driven is about 800 + miles. I do have to put the gas in at least 2 - 3 times to get there. I imagine a smaller tank may need at least 4+. I know my EV can’t stop 2 - 3 times in that distance but probably double that. Even though stops may double, I may only add an additional 2 - 3 hours. In this case, I hope technology can improve but for me, this is once or twice per year where I feel ICE is better in distance and stop. I can’t say about the ride quality yet comparing cruise control vs auto pilot or FSD beta. Maybe end of this year, I can compare cruise control vs autopilot.
As for “no choice”, I know each family is different. If a long road trip triggers issues, maybe the family can think about flying. My family loves to hangout with each other and the more time the merrier. :). Yeah, we might be the annoying family that smiles on long road trips hahaha
@@bacabaca5695 like I said its about the "options" many modern ICE car can do this trip in a single tank and back easily. they have the "option" to stop 2 or 3 times for as short as a 5 min pee break or a side trip for a long lunch In a Tesla, if you are ever in a hurry, can you choose not to stop? you dont have that option do you? I have done this trip many times and even further (penang) having that option is a very powerful tool
Usually 1-2% per day without Sentry Mode and Cabin Overheat Protection on. If you have access to a home charger, Tesla recommends keeping your Tesla plugged in to maintain battery health.
Yes, it's possible. The distance is 380km and Model Y gains 5-8% SoC coming downhill from Genting Highlands (due to regen braking). Model Y Long Range has a real world range of around 420km. In reality, many people will stop for a makan/bathroom break. Going from JB to Genting would need a charging stop, because going uphill drains the SoC more quickly.
Cost comparison if anyone is interested
JB-KL = 350km
ICE car
consumption=16km/L
95 fuel price=2.05
total cost for trip pumping 95 = 44.80rm
97Fuel price 3.37
total cost for trip pumping 97 = 73.71rm
EV Tesla
range in full charge =312km
battery cap=52.6kWH
cost per kWH=1.50(as per this video)
total cost = 88.50rm
49% more expansive over 95 octane petrol
16.7% more expansive over 97 octane petrol
Thanks for head up.
it mean no saving for EV ,,just theory only
Charge at home and it will be cheaper.
Dude so charging ev is not way cheaper than using petrol. Granted charging at home is cheaper but no way it’s way cheaper than ICE in that case
Use SG petrol prices which s$2.85 per litre
Great to know the real world consumption. Great video

Thanks John! Congrats on your Model S Plaid and hope to see you at Tesla Takeover next week if you can make it.
You should try to do this during festive seasons or school holidays because that’s when road trips will typically happen.
Very informative. Thank you Daren! Maybe on your next video, can you review the backseat experience?

Most efficient speed for Teslas would be 90km/hour. Yes, would be good to see others compare the efficiency difference vs Hybrid and ICE!
I have a lr m3 if I know phantom brake is a possibility ahead I will take over driving
Daren, do u hv a video compare Tesla vs petrol car for cost saving?
Thanks for sharing! Charging doesn't seem difficult for road trips like yours.
Sidetrack, any idea if the Model Y currently selling on Tesla Malaysia is on HW 3.0 or HW 4.0?
I’m 99% certain it’ll be HW4.0 for Malaysia once deliveries start in early-2024. US Model Ys have been shipping with HW4.0 for the past 3 months.
Hi Darren. Nice road trip video. Very informative indeed. Do you feel the heat from the glass roof when cruising along NSE in the afternoon?
Heat wasn't an issue for both of us! Tim had a light tint installed on the glassroof and windows to reduce heat.

Thanks Kesler!
Does Malaysia allows Auto pilot? EV needs to RUN IN for the engine? If yes, at how many kilometres? Thank you
Yes, Autopilot works and is legal in Malaysia. Owners should keep their hands on the wheel to be ready to take over anytime for safety.

Hey Angelia. Tim used a MiFi device which can be bought for

What's the difference between standard range and standard range plus?
Do u charge at JB just before entering CIQ like how any Singaporean do with their ICE Car?
You guys spend less money in charging compared to your toll.? Thanks.
Yes! 😅

5 hours is a long time just for kl - sg checkpoint....
Hi Daren, how harsh or comfortable is the 3 vs say a Jap C segment car? Tyre pretty low profile
Lexus would be more comfortable than a Tesla Model 3. Teslas generally have a stiffer and sportier feel.

It is because RM 3.450 sgd
charging the call cost more than petrol, why ev then??

Hi what is your constant speed on the highway?
Follow the speed of cars on right lane
Can you pre plan your trip out of the car?
Yes! You can also do it on the Tesla app or website with Trip Planner: www.tesla.com/trips
Darren, why sometimes the audio in your videos not clear? I thought my laptop problem
I believe it's because of his mic direction
Yes, am using a shotgun mic on top of the camera that picks up forward audio

Same as the average cruising speed on the right lane of NS Expressway!
About 10 mins you get 40+kwh? Doesn't sound right?
We were at Gentari Ayer Hitam for almost 30 mins (spent a fair bit of time behind the scenes getting the RFID Touch 'n Go to work)!

Always wondered why the signs in JB only say Woodlands instead of Singapore.
Probably to differentiate with Tuas checkpoint
Rumor is Tesla Malaysia has gotten up to 5 thousand orders so far
