Thank you for showing how to use a pick up stick. I am new to weaving. I was wondering what your loom is sitting on in the back to be angled. I was also wondering how wide you make yours scarves and how you decide the length.
I have kind of a strange setup I think. I've got the back propped up on a wooden box, which is secured to my worktable with some clamps. I also have a couple of clamps on the front of the table to prevent the loom from sliding forward. Sitting it in my lap just didn't work for me, and I'd rather spend money on yarn than a stand, so I made it work! 😆 As far as scarves go, I make them around 12 inches wide for the most part. The length depends on what I'm making it for. If I'm making it to sell, then it's usually around 70-80" plus fringe? For this channel though, I'm trying to keep each scarf within one skein/cake, so the size depends a lot on how much yarn I have. 🙂
Not silly at all! I had no idea either when I first started. Pickup sticks help you to create patterns other than plain weave by creating floats in either the warp or the weft. Floor looms have multiple heddles, but we can only do 2, so pickup sticks basically act like extra heddles. I hope I explained that ok! 😊
For this specific pattern, step 1 has the heddle in neutral and stick A is turned on end. But for step 4, the heddle is in the Up position with stick B pushed forward. Does that make sense? It gets confusing to explain. 🙂
Thanks,.the fact that the yardstick had a completely different look than the other pickup stick made it easier for me to follow.
Well, that was completely intentional! 😉
Thank you very much for this very nice explanation. Best I ever watched❤😊
I'm so glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching 😊
Thank you for a very clear tutorial on using pick-up sticks. Really enjoying your easygoing, clear videos.
That made my day! Thanks for watching! 😊
Very nice. I've done either a warp float or a weft float on my dish towels without a border. I like the border affect. God bless.
I think both ways are nice, but I do love the border - otherwise I end up with floats wrapping around the edges which I don't love.
This is so clear and helpful!! Haven't gone beyond plain weave yet--I think this is going to be my next project!
Oh, that's so nice to hear! Please let me know how it goes. 😀
Perfect tutorial! Thanks 🎉
Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
Fabulous tutorial. Thank you so much. Love your work.
You are so welcome! 😊

Beginner weaver here. May seem a silly question but what is the purpose of pick up sticks in the first place?

@magpieandmolly Thanks. Appreciate your explanation. Have a great day!
So every time you use the pick-up stick the reed is in a neutral position?

I think so. I’m a true beginner and waiting (very impatiently) for my loom to get here so I am trying to figure out all the ways I can use it.
