tulips being decapitated

When you see a field of tulips flowers, they are being grown for the bulbs, not the flower. The flower is a waste product, decapitated at it's prime. This allows the plant to carry on photosynthesising, not spending energy on the flower, but making the bulb underground bigger and stronger. All this so we can buy it and plant it in our garden!
