I was really lucky. I was at junior school with Joe (then John) and always loved it when he was chosen to sing solos in school assemblies because his voice was so different. He stole the show in the school’s leaving operetta. Later I watched his debut performances at our youth club and then followed him round the pubs and clubs of Sheffield for many years. I could never understand, in the days when I loved Little Richard, Muddy Waters, Ray Charles, Mahalia Jackson, Billie Holiday, Bessie Smith, how it could be that someone who had grown up less than a mile from me could sing in a way that made me put him in the same class as them. Surely I must have got it wrong. I hadn’t. Thanks Joe for years of pleasure that continue even though you’ve gone.
You were schoolmates ? That's so cool ! He seems like he would've been a great guy to hang out with (and to watch perform live on a school stage or in a pub). I agree he had an unique and unusual voice (for a white male), but one that was instantly recognizable and like you said could stand with all these great black blues and soul artists you've mentioned. I hope his soul is in a better place now and may he eternally rest in peace.
I'm glad to have lived in a time when the great Joe Cocker did as well, so many years of his wonderful voice and talent, he will truly be missed. Love you Joe, rest in peace, job well done.
Isn't it interesting, how a person you have never met nor ever got to know, exactly felt the same? Had gone through the same experience? Has find a way to work through it? Thank you, Joe Cocker.
Models. There were a couple of background vocalists that backed Cocker on this album including prolific background vocalist Katie Kissoon (who has provided background vocals for the likes of Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Elton John and many others and was highly in demand for tours). None of these vocalists were featured in this video to my knowledge.
At least one of the girls is a real background singer. Her name is Roberta Freeman and she worked with Joe Cocker for a while. I do not know about the blonde and the brunette but I guess they are also real vocalists. Roberta was interviewed by Rolling Stone magazine and this is what she said about Joe Cocker: ´Oh, my God. Joe Cocker was amazing. I love working with people that I love and respect. When I get off a tour, I love and respect them even more. Joe was such a lovely man and so grateful. He was just lovely. He was such a wonderful, sweet, kind, gentle man. He was nothing but fair and it was such a pleasure working with him. He was an ultimate professional. I was expecting this madman, but that’s not what I saw at all.´

Одна из самых любимых песен Джо Кокера, да и весь альбом 1999 года неплохой.
