  • Thirty years into UN climate talks, the world is hotter than ever. Provinces and the federal government are battling each other and activists, frustrated by political inertia, are escalating their protest tactics, taking direct aim at the fossil fuel industry. All the while, the planet is heating up - with tragic results.

It’s critical thinking that led them to the conclusion that if anyone actually cared about the environment, something like private flights would have been one of the first things to go. Another one would be that politicians and world leaders would not be flying all over the world, constantly to meet with each other at huge conferences that create large amounts of waste products. Climate change has become nothing more than a get rich quick scheme. Even if it is something we need to take seriously, the people pretending to take it seriously are grifters.

There is stiil room for improvement like adding solar PV, putting insulation on the house, and adding a solar thermal water heater and wwhr system. But personal actions like that won't make a difference! Still my green peas comes from another country, I order stuff delivered buy a disel van. Fossil fuels are half the problem. Clear-cutting of rainforests and destruction of wetlands are a big problem, considering these ecosystems naturally absorb carbon from the atmosphere. Ecosystems destroyed and mined of their resources to help with our transition to electric cars, lose their natural ability to regulate the atmosphere.

This is Don Thrower from Welland. Climate change is accelerating and each year will be hotter than the last. We all need to change. We talk about saving the planet but the planet will be here regardless. What should be talked about is saving the current climate. I watched a video that the climate swings are a direct cause of the overall warming. What will happen is it will get hot where infrastructure cannot handle it. The reverse is also happening where it will get cold where the infrastructure cannot handle it. Sadly the sea will rise too slowly for everyone to get seriously worried but the air temperature and fires and floods are happening now. We need to come up with a plan and fast. I hope our governments will make some changes and fast.

Fossil fuel demands continues to increase but, instead of producing in Canada where protections and regulations are high and Canadians would be employed, the Federal Government prefers to keep their hands "clean" by shifting the reliance of energy to imports from other countries. The Federal Government claiming Danielle's Smith Alberta government is undertaking a "political attack" only reiterates how much Ottawa is out of touch with Canadians.

Unfortunately.... you don't seem to understand the ramifications of using Oil Sands Oil ? While ALL Oil 'production' has ghg emissions involved in order to produce Oil..... Oil Sands requires equivalent of burning 1 Barrel of OIl in GHG Emissions merely to 'produce' roughly2.5 Barrels for usage . That's the worst in the world(dirtiest)
The next nearest worst Oil is conventional Oil produced by fracking at ~8 barrels produced for each 1 barrel equivalent.... to as high as 23-25 Barrels of Oil produced for 1 barrel in ghg emissions equivalent(Saudi Arabia).
So it's really not just as simple as saying "let's use Alberta Oil ?
GHG Emissions producing Natural Gas... ghg Emissions burning the Natural Gas to Boil the water to produce Steam.... ghg emissions pumping the Steam down to make the Sand/Tar/Bitumen Flow... and on and on and on GHG Emissions so that a FULL Barrel of ghg Emissions merely to 'produce' 2.5 Barrels of Oil ?

Danielle Smith is a typical politician - more mouth than brain! Double fossil fuel production will benefit US companies the most since Alberta is only a tiny part of the fossil fuel supply chain. If she cares about Alberta's principal industry, she will invest in refining locally high-end products and pipelines to a delivery port in Churchill (including buying three icebreakers). Plenty of clients worldwide for oil and gas products for the foreseeable future (next 50 to 75 years).
Survival of the fittest, a term made famous in the fifth edition of On the Origin of Species by British naturalist Charles Darwin, suggested that organisms best adjusted to their environment are the most successful in surviving and reproducing. Let the fittest develop realistic solutions, such as Hydrogen conversion for the millions of combustion engines. This will curb fossil fuels and repair some damage while making them affordable for the general public.
As for Guilbeault, a convicted environment terrorist, he should be fired, investigated, and likely jailed.

Yeah... we lost 3.1% of BC's land base to fire last year. 3.1%... I don't think most Canadians have even heard this number, but it's a big deal. It's not like this is crop land, 64% of BC's land base is trees that take 100+ years on average to grow back. BC's snow pack is 40% below average for this time of year as well.
When I hear Danielle Smith talk about C02 capture as viable, I'm just left shaking my head. It will never happen, it's far too expensive and slow to introduce. The future is likely going to be from a startup like Quaise Energy (if there's still time enough to turn it around), look it up. 🙂

I don't disagree with anything in this video, and we definitely need to "'wean" ourselves off petroleum and it needs genuine efforts along with cooperation and commitment by every petroleum producing country. However, I don't know why it is rarely, if ever mentioned that the amount of carbon emissions contributed by Canada is about 1.9% of the total worlds emissions. The China, the US, India and Russia are by far the major contributors of emissions. It is important we acknowledge that even If Canada had the ability to completely stop our carbon emissions tomorrow, we would still experience the same devastating effects that we have now (most likely for decades to follow), until the largest emitting countries (China, Russia, India and the US) reduce theirs substantially.

If you're looking for the answer to this question, the UA-cam channel Engineering with Rosie talks about this in the context of wind turbines. Sometimes, the same arguments are made. "Turbine blades aren't recyclable. Won't it be worse for the environment than just burning fossil fuels?" But it ends up being negligible compared to the damage caused by burning fossil fuels.
I imagine the batteries used for EVs and grid energy storage work the same way. Some cost to mine the minerals, yes. Some damage done. Same for the parts of it that can't be recycled at end of life. But still much less harmful than burning fossil fuels.
I'd love to see a version of this for batteries to confirm my gut feeling (or prove it wrong).

The Fifth Estate don't even properly request permission before interviewing someone who isn't accessible to the public for security reasons. If this type of media is accurate and impartial, it will properly obtain permission before conducting an interview. The Fifth Estate is aware of their behaviour and doesn't meet the standards of fairness and truth in broadcasting. I urge you to reapply, attend the broadcasting course, and review the laws guiding fair interviews. Rather it scandalous, suspicious and one sided media. Go back and think on your previous reports.

It takes ton of water to extract those minerals like lithium, nickels. Without water humans can't live either. So since we can't live without fossil energy why not work on finding a way to make it greener ? I'm sure there is a way.
Second, sorry to break the news to you but Alberta is the cash cow of Canada. As a quebecer I'm very aware of it. So what are we going to do with all the jobs lost ? And think payment transfers that goes to other provinces. So what are you willing to give up ? Less cash means less social programs. So no more dental help from the federal. And provinces will have to cut somewhere. Ready to give up free Healthcare ? What about cutting in Education? Ready for this ? Because people need to be realistic here. Less money = less expenses. Unless you're like trudeau or Singh who don't care about sending our country in deep dept. Its nice to see pink elephants and be idealistic but at one put you got to open your eyes and see what's really going on.
