Thanks for this video. I just purchased a nib block and a burnisher to practice fixing dead nibs. Also I love that huge dresser/drawer full of pen parts!
What superb line variations--I wish writing styles and manual penmanship were still taught in schools. When I started school in the early 1960s, we all had filled inkwells built into our desks. Thank you for demonstrating the repair so well.
Wrinkled nib or not, it's a fantastic writer. It reminds me of my Waterman's 55 with a similarly wrinkled oblique italic flex nib - it writes beautifully. I wouldn't want anyone to fix it, just like Brian Eno's AKS Synthi. It had a broken circuit, but it made the most extraordinary sound, and whenever he sent it out for repair he left a note where the broken circuit was that said, "don't touch".
As I always say, the nib is the heart of the pen, I like to look over pens for detail. Not so much how fancy they my look but see what the pen has been through. The nib on your pen writes very nice just like it is.
Pier an excellent video on damaged pen repair. When will you come to Minneapolis, your hometown, and give us a talk? You once, 20+ years ago, came to our pen club meeting and brought some of your large pen-related drawings for showtell. Cheers
That Eagle might have a bent wing, but it can still soar. I just finished restoring a Gold Bond Stonite pen, bought at a local antique store. I adjusted the "Guaranteed for Life" 14K nib today with my fingers, gentle pressure and a prayer. There's usually a moment of panic when the tines cross or seem horribly out of whack, but nothing beats the feeling of success when they line up perfectly.
I'd call it a save. I love the way it looks and the way it works. I wish it was for sale.....WOW, that's a pen parts heaven you've got there in that drawer! Seems like you'd have something to match it, but that cap will definitely work. Great job! 👍🖋
Ah I learnt the hard way about restoring nibs and pens in general. Tryed bending back a lovely parker duofold nib that was bent (but still worked) and in the process snapping off the tines. Also destroyed the nipple of that pen :(
By the way do you have a waterman ideal 52 black cap? From what I can see you have a lot of parts! I'm in bad need for a new cap as mine is cracked, do you have an email? Thanks. Conrad.
I want to convert my Sheaffer's broad nib into calligraphy by grinding it. Will I succeed. Please advise. I am not using the pen because I like Calligraphy only.
"On your youtube channel you can do what the hell you want!" ROFL....Good one! Very admirable considering you had no special tools other than a couple. Perfect hacking!
Thank you sir for this and other helpful videos I've recently watched on your channel. I recently inherited a similar vintage pen which I'm pretty sure is the longer version of the Parker #6 eyedropper. The gold nib performs similarly to the one you demonstrate here. It's also missing the cap which I believe is a triangle shape and a push on. I'd be very interested in contacting you directly by email or phone to see if you might have one. The section is also chipped but it doesn't seem to affect the writing nor does it cause any leaking. Still I'd love to find a replacement. Another question: Are the gold bands on the body of the Parker eyedropper circa approximately 1905 also solid 14k gold? Thanks in advance for your kind help. Regards, Chris
@@PiersStudio Thank you for replying , they are made of steel presumably , i did read that some burnishers , possible in years past, where made from Agate . Anyway you made it look easy when it's extremely difficult , wonderful to watch . I love repairing pens but i don't get much chance mainly due to the cost of acquiring the pen in the first place . I am in no way even remotely at your level but i have changed sacks , fixed cracks, cleaned out really old crusty pens , fixed holes and tuned nibs . I would love to learn to grind nibs and repair pens for a living but that's not gonna happen.
Parabéns pela restauração. Por favor, qual a marca dessa caneta e onde ela é fabricada? Confesso que é a primeira vez que vejo esse modelo. Grande abraço ! ( from Brazil )
Joe Han hard to say without looking at it. If everything looks correct...no bends on it from damage, try it in a different pen. Sometimes swapping a nib and a feed will do the trick. Also setting it further in or changing the relationship of the nib and feed might also fix the problem.
Your collection of parts is mind-boggling..👍👌

That's a great outcome for what I thought was a dead nib
Mr pier, ur videos are very unique and informative, thank you.
Maybe it wasn't bent by mistake, maybe it was bent on purpose to write with that big line variation. It looks like it's bented like pilot falcon.

Most enjoyable, thank you!

katherine busby I wish I could see a bit better. I hate wearing a loupe, but I think I better start!
And to think you have you have only been at this game the past 18 months, easy as Sunday mornings, very good, thank you .R s London Boy.

Amazing work and this needs more patience and an eye for details

@Van Leon and fuck you too!
I like disorganization and long delays.
Yes, it was a long walk off a short Pier.
Very Impressive!
Nice done!
Jokolo thanks
If you enjoy watching an out of focus nib be repaired this is the video for you

Conrad.
What is that ‘grooved stone’ you have there to fix your nib?
The concave ‘gully” allows me to place the nib so I can work it from the underside.
I want to convert my Sheaffer's broad nib into calligraphy by grinding it. Will I succeed. Please advise. I am not using the pen because I like Calligraphy only.
Try using a piece of paper without words on it so your camera will stop focusing on the words

Where can I get that same knockout block??
Joe Han that came with the company I bought. It’s an “original”....you might find something at a jewelers supply that might work for you.
Thank you for sharing Pier that was incredible. When you had the nib in the shaper channel where the tools you where using steel to shape the nib?
matthew Beddow the tools are burnishers used by engravers

@@PiersStudio what is the channel thing, is it custom?
@@paxdomini9714 it was something made for pen shops I guess.

Based on the nib size most likely a Waterman 52, BHR pens were mostly between 1900s and 1930s.
@@lolkthnxbai Muito obrigado pela informação.
Is it a gold nib?
Yes, a gold nib
15:36 how do you stop the tines from pushing against each other like this?? I have an AMAZING nib that is doing this..

Как называется ручка, она старинная?
if u dont care how ugly it looks as long as it works then u should have left it like it was at first. even though it was bent it wrote nicely.
Oh who gives a fig if its the wrong cap!
Woah, tray full of spare parts. do you have any duofold centennial & international mk2 black GTspare cap?mine is missing
Muhammad Harits Insan Kamil hey there...all the parts I have are for pens that were manufactured before 1950
