When me, my brother and my mom were living in a small apartment 4 years back, we had a giant sanceveria, but not that humongous as in the video, it was a medium sized normal common sanceveria. It was potted in a cheap ceramic white pot, and it was sitting there for probably 10 years. One night, as it was sitting right in front of my moms bed on a shelf, the pressure of the tubers was so great that during the night time it exploded with such force and so loud, it felt like a dynamite stick just went off in my moms bedroom. I remember my mom was screaming for a moment her lungs out and after I run to her and turned the light on, we recognized what happened. The plant was sitting on the floor, dirt basically everywhere in the 10 squire meter bedroom, and the shards of the ceramic, well, there was about a million little pieces of ceramic scattered all over the bed sheets and floor. We run in there bare footed and from the shock we didn't realize that our feet were filled with hundreds of tiny shards. We spent the rest of the night and the following day in the hospital, getting our feet cleansed. My mom had to take antidepressants for a week, because she couldn't sleep from the shock. I tell you, it was like a TNT went off in her bedroom. Sanceveria is a dangerous plant, don't pot it in a cheap ceramic pot, use a plastic pot, because them breaking is not as explosive as the ceramic ones.
what a gorgeous whale fin plant!! I bought one (I am a beginner) and didn't realise to check the roots before purchasing them. I ended up with severe root rot. After trying several things to fix it, I ended up cutting off the leaf from the root ball. I'm now watching youtube videos on the best way to propagate it. Water.. soil.. and do I need rooting hormone or not etc. I have propagated some Laurentii leaves, but nothing like this guy. There is only 1 leaf to the plant! Glad to have your video.. 5 years later.
No rooting hormone needed... you can prop in water... that way you can watch root development... soil works the same... but it can take over a year before you see a new sprout
Hi Bill! Seeing you repotting your Sansevieria on the living-room floor was almost as exhilarating as "Some Like it Hot". And considering the fact that Sansies like it potbound you are remarkably generous with the space you gave them in their new residence. It's like moving from a shack to Buckingham Palace. Hope your darlings are going to appreciate the exquisite service. Take care, Bill! Best wishes from Berlin to Ontario! Marc
Love that plant. It's a monster! Sometimes in the tropics they are used as tall, impenetrable hedges, aka 'living fences'. In some species the fragrance of the flowers is truly wonderful. If I was limited to growing only one genus, I would be happy with sansevieria.
"Plants are amazing," I agree! Sansevierias are one of my favorite houseplants. I'm trying to put together a complete collection of all the various types too.
Love Sansevarias! I have many different types, and I agree, their leaf patterns are beautiful. It's funny Bill, you were talking about re-potting in the living room, I drive my family crazy when I re-pot my plants sometimes. I will re-pot in the living room, the dining room, the bathroom, kitchen counter etc., you name it. I can make a pretty big mess, but it gets cleaned up. Looking forward to an update on this snake plant, it really is beautiful. :)
Hi Bill, thanks for sharing your videos, I do have 3 types that I keep outside year around, sometimes in winter I cover them but they are very hardy. I learn that when you take cuttings and they grow, usually they will change color, I learned that dividing them will keep their original colors.
I found one! I was visiting my spouse on the other side of the island, and I had to stop at this garden shop to buy flowers because I didn't have cash to buy flowers at the memorial park, and I found it! These days there's very little things that make me smile, but this plant made me smile. When I first saw your video seven months ago, I imagined if I had one, I'd feel like those kids lost in their back yard in the 1990's movie, 'Honey I Shrunk the Kids"... The leaves aren't that big, but their pretty big. I didn't notice it on yours, but there's red on the edges of the leaves. Now that I know, I think I see the red edges on yours. I'm going to repot mine because the pot, on my giant sensaveira is bulging. I'm going to repot mine in 2 parts potting soil, 1 part sand, and 1 part vermiculite.
Hi Bill How have the cuttings turned out? Would love to see any progress. Sansevierias are some of my favorite plants. Thank you for your wonderful videos.
Bill....you never ramble & you can walk talk chew gum & plant at the same time just fine! 😂 I grew up in big city, SD & enjoy your cold climate friendliness. (Blizzards make us tough ppl, but friendly!) Congrats on your new home!
I've had mine for 4 years and they are taller than my knees but the leaves are not wide like that one I've never seen one with leaves that wide OMG that is beautiful😀😀😀🌿
We share the heart of a sansevarias plant. I have many different types of them. Due to the way our home was built, the rooms on one side are darker so these plants are in every room. Thanks for sharing.
2 idea shares ...I have very small fan ( $6 - $8 ) that always runs towards my indoor cactus patch, set at a distance that keeps a very minor constant air flow,it really helps keep the plants dried out at a good rate between watering. 2nd idea ... I keep a small stash of landscape fabric on hand and just cut swatches to place in pot bottoms at repotting and lets water flow through nice....dig your vids and commentary man !!!!!
If you go to the local home improvement store, you can buy an “replacement window screen” for a few bucks and cut the screen part out to use for blocking those massive drainage holes! It’s cheaper than buying a roll of the stuff bc you don’t need much. I’ve been using this trick for years now and always keep a roll of screen in my gardening bag! Happy planting!
Great advice! I was about to suggest the same. I actually use heavy plastic drain mesh screens used in Bonsai pots. It's a bit more robust and allows more drainage and air circulation but also a bit more expensive.
I bought a large sansevieria after watching your video - just happen to see one, and I grabbed it. I have never seen another, in any store, since. I assume since I live in the tropics, it grows better because I've had to pot it twice. I over potted it the second time (about a year ago), and the plastic pot is bulging.
oh wow!! nice... yes it's likely your climate that encourages more growth... maybe next year I'll put them out on the deck for the summer :) they might like that more
I have a thing for Sansevierias! That one is a giant! I just found a white one at a nursery around the corner and I'm thrilled! I had seen a whiteone on someone else's youtube channel, so when i got one i posted a video on my channel too! I really enjoy your videos, thanks!
PlantzNThings Wow! You had the time to reply! I know you're busy and can't answer everyone, but had I known you'd have time to read my comment, I would had put more effort into it :) Your vids are informational and you're very personable... You made my day! Sigh... Does that sound sad? I don't care. I'm still happy. As a recent widowed father of two smart preteens ('smart' as in smart @ss/smart Alec/Smarty pants) and a six foot tall 14 yr old boy that women are hitting on, I'll take "happy" where ever I can find it!
LOL... Not sad at all :) I used to have a lot more time to reply to comments but it gets hard as the channel and FB groups grow :) I do try to read everything though... You got it :) Take Happy when you get it :) life throws us a lot of Lemons... Make that lemonade and sit down and sit down and relax :)
PlantzNThings :) You're a great guy :) Fun to watch/listen. I don't watch much TV anymore, so after the kids go to bed, I unwind with My Starbucks Ice Flat White and your videos before sleep. To get up in the morning, I've started growing plants. I've been needing a reason to get out of bed in the morning, and plants have done the job. After awhile my mind is occupied and I'm being productive and feeling better. I'm going to look for your Facebook group.
Wow those leaves are massive! I thought I killed mine and when I took it out of the pot to toss it, there was two babies growing in the root ball so now it’s coming back!
Hi, two things: can’t use a paper towel bec they disintegrate over time. You shd use cheese cloth or nylon underneath all the dirt. Second, you re using a terracota pot but it s glazed so the water won’t evaporate as fast. I still thumbs upped
Thanks for sharing! I just bought mine yesterday for $20 for a single leaf... I know it’s expensive but I’m sure I can propagate the leaf and make lots more. This one is sure hard to find. Great insight on how it’s size compares to other types of snake plants.
In the Virgin Islands we call that mother in law tongue. It is a hearty plant ( invasive in most cases.) One little part of the tuber makes the next plant. It takes lots of abuse, poor soil, wet conditions, survives in drought, full to bright shade. doesn't like Sun. I understand that they are great indoor plants because they absorb C02 and releases O2 You have great information. You have a friend in St John USVI.
A couple leaves fell off one of my plants, I plopped then in water and are now growing roots. Seems everything roots in water. I have Christmas cacti I've left in water and then bloomed. ( I get lazy ) once again Thanks for the videos !
Beautiful!! Need an update on those cuttings. Where do you keep this plant, south, west window, etc.? What kind of lighting? It seems to be thriving in that location. Thank you for sharing!!!
Found your instagram so I will post some pics finally of my mom's plants and mine. The Snake plants are from around 1987-88 and the spider plants about the same time. I have a Sago Palm I bought 5 years ago and it has feelers growing.
Whale fin sansevieria is all the rage now. One small leaf goes for about $30 at my local nursery. It's an interesting plant, but I wish the new shoots would grow out closer to the parent leaf to give the plant a bushier appearance.
Gorgeous plant💚💚 I add slow release plant food tablets for my snake plants.... they feed the plant for 6mts so I feed in the spring & that's enough until next year😁
Thanks for this video! I have a snakeplant I bought for $5 that can't really support its own weight anymore. I figured a little while ago that I'd need to split it up eventually but now I definitely need to! Anyway, this video makes it seem pretty easy and gives me confidence that I won't inadvertently kill my favorite houseplant (don't tell my others!) :)
I recently discovered your channel and I love all of your videos and I really appreciate all the advise and info you share!!! Greetings from Long Beach, CA
A little late...sorry. But, this is Sansevieria masoniana Chahin. For many years it was grown and sold/distributed with the cultivar name 'Mason's Congo'. However, that cultivar name isn't officially a part of the accepted scientific name. The specific epithet "masoniana" honors Maurice Mason, an English farmer, avid plant collector, and once-prominent icon of the Royal Horticultural Society; he often displayed plants from his collection at Chelsea. Mason discovered/collected the plant in what was then called the Belgian Congo (now, The Democratic Republic of the Congo). The plant was officially described by Juan Chahinian in 2000, hence his abbreviated name following the genus & specific epithet in, Sansevieria masoniana Chahin. I'm a plant geek not a plant snob. No "condescension" nor "offense" intended. Enjoy your beautiful plants!!
I’ve only had my dracaena trifasciata Lauren Thai Snake plant Flower before it’s really quirky and really weird and it smells like a lily at night and I just found a whale fin snake plant for $13 What a nice Pot
Nice video! Great to see how you do the re-potting. This masoniana looks actually really beautiful. When the cuttings will start to root, will you move them to other pots?
I think I will leave them in that pot... I really want a thick stand of them.... in time I will make a few more pots. but that will be a few years away I think.
Bill; Suggestion: Use cut up old window screens over the drain holes, they won't rot plus keep out any creepy crawlies :) Also, I use course Pumice & Lava rock mixed w/Miracle Grow Cactus Mix for ALL my Tropicals ..
Coffee filters work great for keeping soil in the pot! ☺️ it's funny how we plant lovers think our plants talk and have feelings lol. And bill you never remove old leave dry leaves??
Hi Bill! I enjoy your videos!! Thanks for posting them! Your knowledge is priceless. I have a quick question. I'm relatively new to gardening, and I just purchased my first variety of snake plant, Sansevieria zeylanica. There are 9 plants in the pot and I would like to separate them into 9 pots so they can do their propagating thing. But, I was told by the seller, a home depot personnel, the new pots shouldn't be too big as it could "shock" the plant. They are currently in a 10" pot, so my question to you is what size pot can I place them in once separated which will give it the most success without causing harm, and is there any validity to what the home depot personnel is suggesting regarding pot size when transferring? Thanks for any input you may be able to provide! Cheers!
Finally, yay! Been waiting for this! I have different kinds of Sans. From the smallest, Hanhii (I think), - to - WhiteSnakeplants, and of course, Laurentii, and so so, but prob tho, always dealing with soggy leaves or root rot. Have one that already has a baby, didn't repot it, didn't over water it, but suddenly it broke, (fell off), it had healthy roots already.. just added some wet soil tho (mistake). So, had to remove the baby from the mother plant and replant them both separately hoping they can both recover. And for what it's worth everytime I look at one them (Sans), not sure if it's "Masoniana" but it looks exactly like yours, only smaller. Anyway, I always remember you and wishing mine would get bigger like them! xo, from The Philippines! :)
do you know if the tubers were potted at the bottom of the original plastic pot for stability? also, I use a scotch-brite pad where you use paper towels
hello bill I have one , I water mine atlease once month ,and over the weekend I looked at it n a leave was leaning over , so I touch it n it came out. y .😊 thanks.
Hi Bill! Sansevieria are some of my favourite plants. I'm on a waiting list to get one like this ...and waiting is NOT easy! lol The potting mix you're using is Promix brand general purpose? Do you use this mix for most of your plants? I use Promix's cactus mix for everything right now just because I want better drainage but I'm having to water a lot more frequently, which makes sense.
yes it's just the general purpose soil... this one is higher porosity I am noticing a lot more perlite and they are larger particles... I still add amendments to some of the plants to meet their individual requirements.
Hi! I found mine at my local garden center. I love it... I just looked on WWW.Elho.com but it doesn't look like they sell from their site... check with your local garden center to see if they can get some in. They are called "green basics scoop "
How are those giant leaves formed? I mean, do they start as little cylindrical chaps or are they a different type of leaf which makes itself obvious as a burgeoning baseball bat quite early on in its development?
If the plant can speak,Im sure they will say thousand thanks to you. I can feel what was they fill before you put them on a new bigger pot,and new soil

Awesome cautionary story, respect the mighty Sanseveria!

Yep. We throw piles of it and burn it because throwing it on the side would just grow more.
Then you would bummed when they tell you you can’t grow this one because it’s a draceana.
"Plants are amazing," I agree! Sansevierias are one of my favorite houseplants. I'm trying to put together a complete collection of all the various types too.

This plant is AWESOME, Bill. I wish I had this problem with my plant! COOL!!!
Thank you Bill I really really enjoyed watching you repot this huge snake plant.
Hi Bill
How have the cuttings turned out? Would love to see any progress.
Sansevierias are some of my favorite plants. Thank you for your wonderful videos.
Don't change your style evvvvvver love your vids and your sense of humour. So happy for you in your new home ❤️

OH WOW!!! GREAT IDEA. THANK YOU FOR SHARING. I HAVE ALWAYS USED COFFEE FILTERS. YOU CAN BUY A BAG FOR CHEAP AT THE $1.00 STORE.
Great advice! I was about to suggest the same. I actually use heavy plastic drain mesh screens used in Bonsai pots. It's a bit more robust and allows more drainage and air circulation but also a bit more expensive.
Tremendous! Very large masoniana indeed!
Most impressive Sansevieria! Some of the most robust hearty plants around. I hope it is still doing well. 👍
Wow, that Sansevaria really needed repotted! LOL Nice job, thanks for sharing :)
Hi Bill. I have the same variety. I had 4 plants that flowered. Will try and get the pics for you to see.happy planting. Kevin.
@PlantzNThings I always love and enjoy watching your videos! I totally love sansevierias too

I loved the wonky leaning leaf it really looked like a fin!!!
I agree... I would not have cut it if it didn't take up so much space...lol but I did get some new plants out of it 😀 so no waste
@@PlantzNThings yes at least they turned out handy lol. I just got my first whale fin yesterday! So excited!
Done use paper towel to cover holes, use what we in the UK call scrim tape, the stuff that is used to cover edges when plastering walls.
Sansevierias are my favorite plant. I have thirteen different varieties and love the different look of each. I don’t have a whale fin...YET.🌱🌱
What!?!? no whale fin?!?!! lol
PlantzNThings, I know, I’m currently looking for one. Just got plant mail today - a Sansevieria Dwarf Samurai.🌱🌱
PlantzNThings, I’ve got a variegated whale fin coming - so excited as I’ve been looking for quite a while.
Always fun to see a video from you Bill ❤️.
Aww... Thank you :)
I have a thing for Sansevierias! That one is a giant! I just found a white one at a nursery around the corner and I'm thrilled! I had seen a whiteone on someone else's youtube channel, so when i got one i posted a video on my channel too! I really enjoy your videos, thanks!
After watching you video, I decided to get some! They are not the easiest to find! I have two now! But, the leaves are not as large as yours yet!
my favorite part is exactly at 3:00
Such a beautiful universe plant , I just got one 2 fins , can’t wait to see it grow ! And propagate tfs this beauty 🌱✌️
That giant plant is awesome! I want one!
+Gerald N It's certainly worth looking for :)

Just got a huge bunch from a colleague and am going to repot it soon 😊 into multiple smaller bunches.
I need one in my life. Just waiting on the weather to warm up before I order. Thanks for the awesome video!
Actually..you are more eloquent than you think..you are also hysterically funny..thanks for your pleasant videos
AMAZINGLY beautiful!
Thank you so much for sharing.....cheers from Cyprus

+Debra Lounder isn't it interesting that plants grow so well in water... but if the soil is too wet... it a bad thing....lol plants are fascinating.
PlantzNThings Yes ! I thought about that as well!
Oh my God! It's so big! I love snake plants. I have a couple of small ones.
Julieta Flores I think it’s a whale fin snake plant 😇
I think its s. Masoniana congo. I just started collie ting sansevierias. They are cool.
Beautiful!! Need an update on those cuttings. Where do you keep this plant, south, west window, etc.? What kind of lighting? It seems to be thriving in that location. Thank you for sharing!!!

That look like it's been taking steroids
totally!!! And it feels fake... it's an Amazing plant
That plant is beautiful. Is there an update video?...Ty.
Big plant!
Man I didn't even know they grow that big.
I think your first cutting in planted upside down as that is the side you cut the top of to make two
Good Eye... one of the cuttings didn't take... it was likely that one.
Now I got to go find me one of those!!!😍
The Whale Fin is on my bucket list.
Wooow! Beautiful, you can clean your snake plants with a little bit of milk and water, that will make them breath and shine
An amazing mound of leaves!
It's great isn't it :) this is still one of my favorite plants... I love how thick and rough the leaves are.
I agree, plants are amazing - I love them! Your snake plant is huge, I'll have to get one. They're cheap too. I mostly have orchids.
can't go wrong with orchids :) but it's nice to toss some other plants in there to add variety... I hope you can find one of these big Sans.
Al C
Al C do you sell the cuttings or babies? would love to have one
Love plants❤️❤️❤️
Wow that's a big and beautiful plant. How is it doing no Work?
We need an update on this wonderful whale fin!
Bill; Suggestion: Use cut up old window screens over the drain holes, they won't rot plus keep out any creepy crawlies :) Also, I use course Pumice & Lava rock mixed w/Miracle Grow Cactus Mix for ALL my Tropicals ..
Great Idea :) Thank you... I might need to buy a roll of window screen
biggest snake plant I ever seen wow!
Wowww such a large snake plant
That sansevieria is on my wish list. Gorgeous plant. Thanks for the vid.
Coffee filters work great for keeping soil in the pot! ☺️ it's funny how we plant lovers think our plants talk and have feelings lol. And bill you never remove old leave dry leaves??
Wonderful
I honestly thought that was photoshopped. It's huge!
+Rinsuki that's why I had to have it :) it even looked fake in the store...
Rinsuki oh it’s really big
I use coffee filters in the bottom most of the time
Good Call :)
Cheers!
That is a big one
Samantha Thao it’s is ,,,
......give them full sun and lots of water and food......they will explode with growth.
do you know if the tubers were potted at the bottom of the original plastic pot for stability?
also, I use a scotch-brite pad where you use paper towels
not sure if that was the reason... or maybe over time as the rhizome spiraled it went deeper in the pot.
after i split mine up and shared half of it... the shock made it flower. i didnt know they flowered.
hello bill I have one , I water mine atlease once month ,and over the weekend I looked at it n a leave was leaning over , so I touch it n it came out. y .😊 thanks.
Who waits that long till the pot cracks not me
Nice UPS shirt and great video
+FellCommaDestroyed lol... Yay UPS...lol
Nice! Thanks for the video :)
wow i like it
Enjoyed
Hi, where can I get a scoop like yours, thank you.
Hi! I found mine at my local garden center. I love it... I just looked on WWW.Elho.com but it doesn't look like they sell from their site... check with your local garden center to see if they can get some in. They are called "green basics scoop "
Thank you.
