    When I was a kid my dad would put buckets out with water and spray some diesel in it. The diesel would put an oily film on the water and when the mosquito landed in there to lay eggs, the oil coated their wings and they couldnt fly out. Mosquito and eggs all die.

      Does it really make a difference? It just seems so counterintuitive to leave pots of water that will attract more. I keep no sitting water in my yard so by adding sitting water, I feel like I'm inviting mosquitoes that "I'm not responsible" for since I keep my yard clean

    I've heard that if you do this in an area where you have standing water off your property but nearby, the female mosquitoes will get some of the BT on them from the bucket and inoculate the nearby standing water, thus harming the mosquito population further. Would be great if that's true.

    Thanks for this, I may try it. My backyard is absolutely swarming with mosquitoes to the point that I can't even let my dog out without spraying her down with mosquito repellent (dog safe of course) I have done everything I possibly can to eliminate breeding grounds, cut down bushes and shrubs and make sure there is absolutely no standing water but my yard is heavily shaded with giant 15ft trees and I'm definitely not cutting those down. Have looked into the dynatrap but I don't want to capture any non-harmful flying bugs and they're expensive. Question though, since this is still providing an area of standing water will this inadvertently attract more mosquitoes?

    • @ThatKiltedGuyDIY
      @ThatKiltedGuyDIY  Рік тому +11

      It won’t attract that many more. And look at it like this. If you did attract a mosquito from 50 yards away or 100 yards away and you kill all the eggs she lays, then there won’t be 100 mosquitoes 50 yards away coming to find you. so I would totally not worry about any you’re attracting. I would much rather kill 100 and have one still flying around then vice versa

    You can just use water, monitor it daily, when you see the larvae swimming about and before they get larger just pour the water out, onto plants or some where that the water will dry out. Nothing will entirely eliminate mosquitoes but this helps some and is better than nothing. Don't let the larvae mature.
