i had three teachers starting in 1987. None told me to use a metronome, to hold the pick between index finger side(not the tip) and thumbtip, or what pick width to use(around 1 mm). Alternate outside and directional inside economy alternate picking was never explained. I learned all this from youtube videos. My experience is teachers either dont know or they dont tell what to do.
