This is true... Block heater is optimal. I was just making this quick vid to demonstrate what the official starting instructions call for and I figure this is what people would do in the field if no block heater power was available and this deep frozen CUCV is what you had to deal with. Thanks again for the watch and comment. Good advice. Fact is, these thigs HATE being started in the cold.
I've had no problems registering but I bought both of mine with titles from people who had them on the road already (one in NY and one in PA), registered, insured and inspected. I've never gone through the process with an untitled vehicle. If you are getting your new CUCV from the person I think you are getting it from, tell Mike I said hello!
@@RocknusUrbanCamouflage OK, this one the people bought from an auction so hasn't been registered to a civilian yet. They've had another before but I'm betting it was registered in NH.
Yes... I keep it to the floor until it starts and the idle begins to rise and just before it hit's that "uncomfortable" RPM for such a cold engine (Only take a second or 2), pull the foot back and feather it a little at low RPMs. Now that I said that... Give it a listen and you'll see. BTW... No anti-gel substance mixed in my diesel here and it still starts. Love these things.
@@RocknusUrbanCamouflage You are not supposed too & I don't recommend it. I had one Runaway on me bcuz the Cable went frozen. Was a 22000 orig mile truck Donezo.
@@SchnelleKat Oh man! That sucks! What I posted here though is the actual official military starting instructions as posted on the visor and in the TM.
Also a good tip for 6.2 (or any old diesel owner) is MAKE SURE you got a GOOD Positive battery terminal at the battery not some chincy little $7.97 cable end....I replaced my cable end ant it cranks gangbusters now w my Optima Yellow.....good battery/connection and DONT forget to check that you have the Starter Brace bolted to the block especially the newer 12v Starters GM superceeded to a different design starter but NEVER made the new bracket knowledge avail to the aftermarket at Oreilly/Vatozone's so people throw the old support away/starter core return and never goto GM dealer(online amazon jungle now) to get the correct block bracket....save the 6.2 blocks from cracking! Get the bracket....search for GM part# 23802557 this is for 12V civilian starters Do not know if the 24V have same bracket? If you goto the 12V setup youll be able to take a jump from a honda civic if needed...cant do that w 24v setup. Also saves 80lbs off front end between battery/alternator and $100+ in battery cost. Have to change glow plugs to 12v I believe if you do the conversion to 12v. Also find a civi cluster so you dont have Gen1/Gen2 idiot lights. I got an '84 1008 on 4.5" lift and 38s...SAVE THE CUCV'S
I feel that! Both of my CUCVs had horrible thumb-breakin' doors when I got them. The doors actually open and close pretty easily now (when they aren't frozen shut with ice.) They are aligned pretty well, new strikers, new locks, linkage cleaned and lubed. I'll be posting some bodywork videos soon and spotlight some of those fixes. Thanks for the comment!
Keep the videos coming!!
That's the plan! Got 2 new big ones almost ready. Coming soon. Thank you.
Better idea is to plug in block heater

7-5-7, hold glow button for seven let off for seven hold for 5, let off for seven, hold for seven then start it up!
I'm most likely buying one tomorrow night in Mass, you have any problems registering it?

Do you hold the pedal to the floor while it’s turning over? And then left off when it fires up?

I have more problems opening frozen doors than single digit cold starts...
Truth! This video proves it! Thanks for watching and commenting, Stephen.
I hate the way those doors open, it’s the same with old keeps, I’ve popped my thumb out of soccet three times in the past 4 years
