I used to frequent two thrift stores in my neighborhood. The donors were local wealthy people. They would wear Brioni ties, Armani suits, Charvet shirts, and Ralph Lauren casual wear for one season and then donate it. For me it was an affordable way to be able to acquire luxury items while being a PhD student.
GQ has been pretty misinformed and frankly unqualified to talk style for awhile but Yang-Yi is definitely an exception. He got almost all given information accurate.
La Matta was one of the best leather brands of the 1980s. It was very expensive and regularly appeared in magazines like GQ, Vogue/ Vogue Uomo, and Mondo Uomo. Barneys in New York carried La Matta.
I found a grey 100% wool Pierre Cardin sports jacket that was exactly my dimensions like it was tailored for me. When I went to pay, the cashier gave me a senior discount. I felt like I just won the lottery!
Try a vintage store. This guy is doing the presentation in a nice vintage store--the kind that stocks a lot of variety. You can just tell by the background.
13:20 incorrect. The duffle coat originated in Belgium in the 17th century, and was later adopted by England. The coat was named after the Belgian town of Duffel, where a thick, black wool called "duffel" was used to make the coats.
You don’t wanna buy items that are now outdated but you talk about how items are in style again. That means they are also a trend and will go back out of style. But classics and they never age.
Why do we need a 27min video for this? Size up to give yourself room to tailor and check the label to make sure its not 100% polyester. There saved you 30 mins
cool vid but miss me with the leather. animal-cruelty is a hard-line NO for me. If you’re going to educate about leather quality do you think it responsible to share what it takes [pain, terror and unreasonable suffering] to produce that leather?
@@chief6541Well, the title of the video reads thrift like a pro which in my understanding is supposed to be like a video guide shearing some tips and trick to spot some gems out there. However, the video fails to deliver any useful insight. It’s just a dude describing what’s in front of him. Where are the other guys with some banter? Plus, the video is half an hour long! What’s up with that?
Despite the misleading title. This video will not teach you how to thrift for suits. It will just show some random giving his opinion on a few random items. And most of his thoughts are wrong. GQ has been a joke for years.

That Harris tweed jacket was a beaut.
This definitely makes me want to go thrift shopping for the first time. Thanks you, GQ!
hahahah i love the pauses with more context, great video!!!
more vids like this would be cool. most of his opinions & input i agree with. but also depends on what ur going for and whats ur lifestyle.
Everytime I thrift I want him to be with me explaining everything in detail
I found a grey 100% wool Pierre Cardin sports jacket that was exactly my dimensions like it was tailored for me. When I went to pay, the cashier gave me a senior discount. I felt like I just won the lottery!
More of this guy please!!
Great video, informative and fun!
More vids like this please
I'm gonna make myself believe that GQ recommends is back
I’ve never heard Karl Kani be pronounced like that. Thought it was Kan-eye.
Honestly kind of miss GQ just talking about clothes. That’s how I got into GQ
This dude is gonna save GQ
Needed this one👏🏾👍🏾✊🏾
Amazing video
Thanks for this
He knows things! ❤
"You can really feel the polyester quality of it" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
This help thx
Wow... That's some next level thrifting...
🎶 I'm gonna pop some tags only got 20 dollars in my pocket!
Just bring back GQ recommends
Idk how to get one that fits at a thrift shop. I wish he would have talked about that
🔥
For a while I was finding really great quality clothes at my thrift store. I stopped going after all I would find was cheap clothes.
Some thrift stores will take the nicer things and sell them online themselves.
Try a vintage store. This guy is doing the presentation in a nice vintage store--the kind that stocks a lot of variety. You can just tell by the background.
Respect to Yang-Yi (although not a fan of putting stuff in blazer pockets, even if they are patch)
Only in the world of fashion is using a pocket as a pocket regarded as wrong.
Just remake it w history but vibe is awesome give some street wear or formal start suggestions too
dang the thrift game is officially cooked beyond we’ll done
This is for the US, yes? Some of those I wouldn't touch in the UK.
GQ is alive? what?
Canadians cut corners, we only wear Canali, Zegna, Isaia
starmer is a pro at this.
His father was a toolmaker dont you know
But they are most likely in US size 42
Karl Conny 😂
GQ giving style advice? Cap. Bring back GQ rules.

Is this the same guy who said blazers and board shorts are appropriate?
19:34 it’s pronounced KUH-nai
The cut of the jacket is based on the time period but also the region. European (Italian) suits are slimmer American and British suits are boxier.
One E.Asian to another, I used to wear specs. Might wanna have the optician to adjust your spec's nose pads & legs
the VHS white noise cutting in and out is incredibly annoying and unnecessary

Dior? At a thrift store? Where is this store?
8:19
smh beacons aint no thrift store its NYC version of a glorfied platos closet
Dior was a RTW label in the 80s
thrift doesn't exist, ressellers ruin everything.
1 out of 30 jackets isn't bad
Step one: don’t have a 54” chest measurement.
Here is this?
Umm, who approved this video 🤔
Jeans and tie? I don’t know… 🙄
Why do we need a 27min video for this? Size up to give yourself room to tailor and check the label to make sure its not 100% polyester. There saved you 30 mins

Karl who? I don’t believe that is how you say Kani.
cool vid but miss me with the leather. animal-cruelty is a hard-line NO for me. If you’re going to educate about leather quality do you think it responsible to share what it takes [pain, terror and unreasonable suffering] to produce that leather?
Boy butchered Karl Kanis name 😂
MOST OF THOSE CLOTHES ARE OUTDATED AND WORN
I’m sorry GQ but what’s the point of this video? The dude shows some random pieces flexing menswear history trivia. wtf?
exacty my thoughts...
It's about how to identify quality, something many people in our current generations are lacking.
Enjoy or get out, no comment warranted or desired.

Most of these pieces are straight up hideous regardless of quality!
go into a store and look around. Saved you 27 minutes.
Question? Who said this guy was a style expert? Im not impressed by him or his commentary! NEXT!
First of all this guy has on a dress shirt with a tie and he's wearing jeans with it, "he doesn't even know how to dress"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Suits are a dying fade
Personally, I knew I would like this video when I saw the host wearing the Polo 67 jacket🫡
starmer is a pro at this.
