I have not fired my Mark II in a couple of decades. I took it apart to inspect it, and the last trick you showed for turning the gun upside down and aligning the strut did the trick. I was not able to pull the hammer back before that. So many years later and this video still in demand!

You make this look sooo easy... Bought mine back in the 80's and I still have nightmares of cleaning it... I recently started shooting it again and I'm afraid to take it apart :) after watching this , well there is a small chance I might do it :)

I’ve had a slab side for probably 20 years. Takedown and reassembly isn’t really so terrible once you get used to it and it’s certainly not impossible. After you do it a dozen or so times, it’s just another gun cleaning routine. Kind of fun actually, knowing that you can do this without thinking twice while so many others are intimidated.

Wow I had mine for 10 yrs before I sold it and the whole reason I did was taking apart to clean it. Had to go to a gunsmith twice for re-assembly to bad this video wasn't around in 2007. Great video and a big help to Ruger community

Dude thank you so much for this! I was having so much trouble putting it back together, watched like 3 different videos and they all said "just put the pin in and fold it over" nobody explained the hammer strut having to be in a certain position. I couldn't cock the hammer back at all until I watched your video. You're a life saver!

Yours is the best on the Ruger MK II field stripping. Especially the trick at the end. Now I am going back out to the garage and try to get mine put back together, now that I understand what to do. THANKS A LOT. You have done the MK II community a really good service.

I have a MKII just like that. In 30 years I have never once taken it apart and don't ever plan to unless it stops working. Fantastic gun, put thousands of rounds through it.

+John .Dlugos I've had mine for 35 years now and prior to today, I had only ever taken it apart for cleaning once. I had such a difficult go of it back then, that I hadn't cleaned it again before today. Mine finally started to have cycling issues after several thousand rounds. As long as you closely follow this video, I doubt you'll have any problems when you take it apart. I was shocked that the gun functioned at all; it was so horrible inside I went through dang near half a bottle of Hoppes #9 and half a can of Gun Scrubber to get it clean.

These Mark II's are awesomely reliable. I compete in Steel Challenge matches in a variety of classes, including rimfire class. I use a (basically "stock") Mark II Slabside, while all these folks are sinking dollar after dollar in 22/45's and much more expensive pistols. When you look at the scores, me and my Mark II are in the upper echelon of competitors. I wish I could say we were a #1 team, but while the Ruger Mark II does its job, the shooter often leaves a much to be desired. Though I like the release lever on the Gen 4's, which is L O N G overdue, I think I'll stick with my old faithful Mark II. Good instructional video.

Wow, I just spent over an hour trying to reassemble my Ruger Mark II pistol. I looked at several video's with no success. Your step by step instructions made it possible for me to complete. My problem was I failed to squeeze the trigger towards the end, until you mentioned it. This is a very difficult gun to field strip, but with your help, it was possible. Thank you very much, you are a life saver.

Awesome video. Was really struggling with it until I kept rewatching and like you said, I had to have the hammer strut just perfectly aligned. So I used a bent out paper clip to put it exactly in the right spot and hold the gun at an angle and it actually draws all the way back to slingshot now. And now I can dissasemble and reassemble very easily.
Thank you for the great video!

I'm glad you did this. I have 2 that were my fathers. That haven't been touched in 20 years. I was scared to force things and the hard part with the final was truly the confusing. The whole lever in the handle coming out and going in was hard. Had to tap it both ways. Thank you sir.

THANK YOU for this excellent video! About 25 years ago I inherited my dad's Mark 2 Target pistol, but had it has been stored away and not working properly. With help from your video I was able to (finally!) take it apart and give it a MUCH-needed cleaning and oiling, got it back together, and now everything seems to work smoothly and perfectly. I can't wait to take it to the range and shoot it... it's been far too long since I have shot it! (since my dad passed away 25 years ago.) I think he'd be very happy to see me shooting it again. Thanks so much for your very clear and easy to follow instructions. Best video I found for this gun.

+bgallaher77 It is an awesome gun to shoot, and yes, I'm really happy to have it. I now know why my dad liked this gun so much - it is just dead-on accurate and really fun to shoot. I can consistently hit bulls-eyes and keep 1 to 2-inch groups with this gun. I only wish I was as accurate with higher caliber guns! But I'll get there eventually. Whenever I go to the range, I now always start and finish with this gun, because then I start and end with great results (even if the middle isn't yet where I want it to be!). Thanks again for the great video... just watched it again for another cleaning. Please don't ever take this video down! :)

Thanks so much for a great video bgallaher77!!! I belong to a pistol league and shoot my MKII every January - March. Then the gun sits for 9 months. Too much time for my old mind to remember all the little tricks to reassembling it. The manual is helpful but your video makes the job so much easier. A word of caution for MKII owners. Always make sure the firing pin retaining pin is in the bolt prior to sliding the bolt into place. If the pin fall out and you don't notice, the first time you pull the trigger you will damage the pistol. Unfortunately I know this from experience. Had to take it to a gunsmith for some machining to get it operational again. Other than the headache of breaking these pistols down and reassembling them, they are a great pistol. Extremely reliable and accurate. Once again, thanks for a great video. I've used it 3 years in a row. Wish I could buy you a beer!

Thank you for the great video. I've bought one of these pistols from a friend who needed to sell it for $200 many, many years ago. It's also my wife's favorite pistol. It's been inside a pistol rug, hasn't been used for around 7 years and it has never been cleaned. That is, till now. Didn't have to use a mallet to remove or reattach the top. Maybe I was lucky. The entire process went very smooth. Bought a low-end pistol cleaning rod from Academy. Used some old Hopps bore cleaner I still had laying around. Sprayed Rem Oil in every nook and cranny then applied some Tetra-Gun gun grease. Life is good!!

Fantastic video, huge thanks! I feel a bit consoled now that I've read the other comments on this video... I'm not the only one that has had a rough go of getting this thing back together. Your video solved the issue I was having. The last step of re-assembly just wasn't working out very well. Even though my gun is circa 1981 or so, it was similar enough that following your instructions finally got it back together. I remembered that the gun was difficult to take apart for cleaning, so mine hadn't been cleaned since the early '90's. I imagine I've shot around 2k-3k rounds through it since then, and I just started to have problems with it not cycling correctly. So I bit the bullet (insert rim shot here) and finally cleaned it. Can't wait to take my son to the range tomorrow! Again.. many thanks!

Yours is the best video. That Hammer Strut gave me fits. I have never fired this gun, but want to know how it works first and clean it. I am not brave enough to tear apart the bolt- not yet. Thanks for the video though, it saved me! Others call the Hammer Strut a "thing" a "tang" and the dark videos do not show enough detail.

I bought one from a guy that was pissed off at the pistol. I bought it in pieces ( cheep) I took it home and put it back together and I still own it. He's happy and I'm happy end of story.

Great video. Here's a good cleaning tip: Once apart, stuff a paper towel up where the magazine goes in the receiver and spray WD-40 into the top of the receiver and use a toothbrush to scrub it. Soray WD-40 again to rinse and then use compressed air to blow out any chunks that remain, then pull out the paper towel that soaked up all the debris. Easy peasy.

LOL! 300 rds before cleaning? I've got THOUSANDS of rounds thru my MKII Govt model without even a drop of CLP. Not a single malfunction of any kind.100% reliability and 100% enjoyment to shoot. When I finally do get around to a complete take down and cleaning, I'm sure I'll have to call a hazmat team since I'd imagine there's a pound of lead in the lands and grooves. This may be my actual favorite gun to shoot. Pure pleasure. Incredibly accurate. But it is a major PIA to take down. Thanks for the vid. I may just get it out of the safe and finally clean it. I'm pretty sure the last time it was cleaned was back in the early 90's.

Awesome, simple to follow video! Before the video I would get the disassembly but with the assembly I'd get stuck; unable to get the 'bolt stop pin' seated beyond the spring :-\ Eventually I had to have an armorer friend seat it. Today, I did the disassembly and assembly, step by step with the video. Success! Thank you!

After I assemble it (took days to figure it out), why won't the slide pull back all the way? What am I doing wrong? Anybody want to but an almost new stainless Mark II competition piece?
