      @@luceleaf What? Hermits are prey animals and them being around a dog will be stressful them. Please dont have it near, or dont get one at all. Plus your dog could think its a toy or food, i never have any of my small pets around my pitbull. It’s not because shes aggressive but dogs will be dogs and try to eat/play with small things.. roughly

    Hi, I'm going to be a first time crab owner tommorow! I've been patiently waiting to to rescue off Craigslist 🙂 I'm super excited and have enjoyed and appreciated your videos to help me prepare. You mentioned in a Q&A video you have crabs in your classroom. That's where mine will live after ppsd quarantine. I'd love to see a video or article or something geared towards teachers. Like- what do you over the weekend? What about long breaks? How does your school setup and routine differ from your at home? Thanks for everything!!

      Hi K Tex! I'm so sorry that I missed this message. We try to respond a lot sooner than now. So, this year (Covid-19) I haven't had my crabs at school with me. I brought them home last spring when school was canceled. I didn't take them back this year because I was afraid school would be canceled again and I didn't want to have to move them again. In a NORMAL school year, I leave them in my classroom all year and summer. I live close to my school and I have access to my room year round. I have filtered pools, so that make it possible. I also use a lot of foraging foods during the weekends and holidays. I also have a thermostat on my tank that has wifi and connects to my phone so that if something ever gets too high/low, I get an alarm. My tank lights are on a timer so that when I am not at school they still get their 12 hour day/night cycle. I hope this helps!

    Hello! Just recently got two hermit crabs. I originally was just gonna get one but I watched your other video about their care and ya'll talked about how hermit crabs are social and need a buddy so i went ahead and got two instead. I already have a enclosure for them at home with the dirt and sand needed aswell as a drinking bowl but today i got the heat pad for the back of the enclosure aswell as a another bowl for salt water swimming. Aswell as some extra shells. Sadly the only pet store around here that had hermit crabs only sold them in the painted shells so I'm hopeing they'll move into the unpainted ones naturally. I bought 3 empty shells but I have 6 or 7 at home aswell. They're pretty small rn so I'll probably only put the smaller shells in. This isn't my first time owning hermit crabs. I had three as a child that sadly didnt make it from lack of care- I was a dumb kid but I wanna tackle caring for them again as a responsible adult this time. No names yet but after watching this and learning they can change sex I'm not gonna dwell on the gender of the names lol or I can pick a name that's Unisex that way it fits no matter what gender they transition to :3 thanks for the formative videos!

    I gotten 3 hermits Wednesday and I'm slowly adding to their tank as i couldn't find more substrate or a thamomiter.. they been hiding. 2 are visible but underneath things and I can't find the 3rd, I don't think he would be buryed because I don't think it's deep enough as it was only 1 small bag of Substrate for a 30 gallon tank. I do plan getting more and other things for them to climb. I got a cute Log and a Coconut for them to hide in.. what else would you recommend me to get for them to climb on and go in thanks in Advance

    • @CrabCentralStation
      @CrabCentralStation  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Kaitlyn. First, make sure the small bag of substrate you have in the tank is not calcium or calci sand. That stuff turns into a cement like substance when it gets wet and hardens the crab into his/her shell. You want play sand (that you put in a Childs sand box) from a home improvement store like Home Depot or Lowes. It is about $5.00 for a 50 pound bag. You will need 3 of those bags for your 30 gallon tank. You will also need 1 and 1/2 brick of eco earth, or a bang and a half if you rather buy the bags. Then, you can start to add your decor and climbing structures. I suggest natural safe wood like cork rounds, mopani wood, grape wood, Cholla logs. They also like to climb plants. You can use fake ones from the aquarium department of PetCo or Walmart. You can also find fake plastic plants at places like Hobby Lobby. Check out our videos on basic hermit crab care, food 101, Heat and Humidity, basic water pools... those will all help you get set up for success.

    • @CrabCentralStation
      @CrabCentralStation  3 роки тому +1

      Hi! You will need 1 50lb bag of sand per 10 gallons of tank. So for a 40 gallon tank, you will need 4 bags of sand. You should have enough eco earth with those bags but it will be hard to tell if you have the right ratio unless you put the substrate in one cup at a time. You can do 5 cups (or whatever container you want to use) of the sand and then 1 of the eco earth.

    Why and how could they change their gender after a molt

    • @CrabCentralStation
      @CrabCentralStation  3 роки тому

      The why is easier to answer - survival through procreation. We have a closed environment in captivity. If we have all males or all females, there is no way to procreate to continue life. Therefore, it is believed by some, that through the molt process a crab will generate the sex organs of the "missing" or "needed" gender. Hermit crabs often regenerate a missing limb, even an eye stalk during molt, so it's not entirely unthinkable that they can change genders if needed. This is definitely a debatable topic in the hermit crab community. However, I know several people that are scientifically tracking their crabs and have proof that their crab changed gender. Super cool animals!
