  • Southwest of Seymour, Indiana, in the town of Vallonia, is what looks like an early 1800’s fort. Settled by French people in the late 1700’s, Vallonia became a village of about 90 families, before Indiana was even a state. To protect these settlers, William Henry Harrison ordered Fort Vallonia built, and Indiana Rangers to live there and conduct patrols.
Shawnee Indians ambushed and killed Ranger Robert Sturgeon, and then killed three additional settlers, in a war party that attacked Fort Vallonia. Major John Tipton assembled 29 rangers to search for this war party, finding them on an island in the middle of the White River. A gun battle commenced, killing one war chief and wounding several others. Three Indians drowned in trying to cross the river, while the rest escaped. The fort was never attacked again.
This is a visit to Fort Vallonia, a surprising stop along the Indiana backroads!

Thanks for featuring Vallonia. I have very deep roots there and still didn't know much about it. If you ever do a longer video about Fort Vallonia Days, a mention of the historical reenactors and the primitive craft demonstration would be good. oh, and there is axe throwing.

The island where the battle took place is now called Tipton Island. There is a monument there for the battle. It is located slightly northeast of the State Highway 11 bridge. Tipton street (US 50) in Seymour is named after him

I read the road side plague while my wife and I were camping at starve hollow. Also went and checked out the old jail cell and learned about the reno gang in Seymour.

The festival is hugemongous! I ran into the traffic by accident one year, finally got back this fall when the crowds were gone.

It's a good day out, especially if you like flea markets. There is always a very good fish sandwich for sale next to the Bluebird there. The local Arby's has a stand for some reason. And the old gym has desserts like persimmon pudding and I think, ham and beans. The gym also has the real bathrooms. Just stuff I always wanna know before hitting a festival. Oh, and there is usually a parade around 1 pm on Saturday..unless it is at 11 am? Also, nearby Seymour has an Oktoberfest the first weekend in October.

Vallonia was also considered for the first capital of Indiana prior to Corydon becoming the first capital.

Interesting place for sure Roger! They must have had some good trackers to find them on an Island. The festival sounds great too.

John Tipton was like Daniel Boone. He learned Indian ways of tracking, was a great woodsman, and was well known as an Indian fighter. I didn’t know it before the segment, but he’s the namesake of Tipton street at Seymour, and Tipton Lake at Columbus.

Locals say the Indians starved to death . That's why the local hallow is called Starve Hallow.

Type “1879 Indiana geological report”. Copies are on numerous university servers throughout the US.
