    I used to buy shoes that cost about $100 to go the office every day. I work in London so I walked a lot and used the underground (subway). After maybe 60 days or so my shoes would start falling apart and my feet hurt. Once I started making more money I invested in a pair of Santoni, and then another down the line. I’ve had those for 10 years and they still look and feel amazing. Good shoes are like a good watch or a good car.

    you guys should do something like $1000 shoes vs $300-400 shoes (Allen Edmonds), that'd be more interesting than compare luxury shoes with trash $65 shoes.

    Paying $800 for a pair of shoes is not expensive at all. A really good pair of bespoke can easily start at $1,500 to $2,000 and go to $4,500 without getting ridiculous about it and paying through the nose.
    The thing to remember is that a $2,000 shoe is going to cost you a lot less over it's lifetime than a $500 shoe. Plus, you look great the whole time you're wearing them.

      jeppep95 I visited an Allen Edmonds store in Houston last November and while they are solid shoes I wasn’t impressed with the quality of the finishing on the uppers on their standard line. I also find their last shapes to be a bit uninspiring. English shoes seem to provide more range and better value.
      One major advantage of American shoemakers is the range of width options offered. They also do shell cordovan really well.

    Great video, but I still feel like buying shoes at a price point in the middle of these is the BEST way to go. You can get great, well made, real leather shoes from Allen Edmond, Johnston & Murphey, etc. for a much more reasonable investment $200-$400.

    • @domodepiano
      @domodepiano 6 років тому +3

      Wesley Pardue good points though Johnston Murphy can be decidedly lower quality unless one opts for the Aristocraft line and even then, they used to be made in USA and lately quality even on those has gone down but that's the line to look at if you'll go w them. Probably more appropriate to put Alden there w AE as an option for 3 to 5 hundred bucks

    • @WesleyPardue
      @WesleyPardue 6 років тому +1

      Danbo_de_Piano_Part_Deux you're probably right on the quality. My J&M Chelsea boots are some of the most comfortable shoes I have ever owned though. Much more comfortable than my Allen Edmonds. I don't think they'll last a lifetime like my AEs, but so far they've held up really well.

    • @IllinoisTrafficAttorney
      @IllinoisTrafficAttorney 6 років тому +1

      Danbo_de_Piano_Part_Deux I certainly agree with you on Johnston Murphy's being lower-quality in general. That being said, it is possible to get better quality shoes from Johnston Murphy if you're very careful. I bought an outlet pair of Cap Toe oxfords in Walnut calfskin that doesn't appear to be corrected that have aged very well and are Goodyear welted. They cost me $120. In general, Allen Edmonds is the way to go but if you are very discerning and know what to look for, you can find an occasional shoe from Johnston & Murphy at the lower in price lines that are worth the value.

    I’m somewhat confused? Why would anyone compare a $65 dollar shoe against an $850 dollar shoe? Secondly, the definition of a good year welted shoe should be provided; along with an “open channel” and a “closed channel “ stitch. I would also talk about Blake stitched shoes as well. I would also go over the quality of leathers that expensive and cheap shoes are made of (ex. Top grain vs low grade genuine leather ) and the overall quality and care for the cheap vs. expensive shoes, and why people pay a lot for certain brands. This video, at best , is pedestrian and could be way more informative.

    Recently purchased a pair of RM Williams boots...excellent fit and very nice. Not cheap at $600 a throw, but quality footwear lasts a very long time. I will buy another pair in black shortly. It’s certainly all up to the individual. As an Australian, I’ve never heard of half of your shoe brands, but I have had bespoke footwear made for me before, and I’ll do it again. I do not generally buy very cheap shoes, as I find this type of footwear uncomfortable to wear, so I need to spend more to make sure I’m comfortable in what I’m wearing. It’s personal though, I like quality, so I always buy the best that I can afford. That’s how it should be.

      A.P. Says Thanks for the info! I had it in my mind that they were Blake stitched due to the Italians using that method of construction over Goodyear...

    • @APSays-hu1wd
      @APSays-hu1wd 6 років тому +11

      There seems to be a notion that Blake construction is inherently "lower quality" than GYW. While it is simpler, you have to think about the environment in which the shoes will be worn. Blake, BR, and Bologna welted shoes are preferred by the Italians because they are more comfortable and stylish (since the sole does not have to be as thick to account for a thicker welt) than most GYW shoes. GYW are preferred by the British and the Americans because they are of a heavier, sturdier construction that to these markets equates luxury. If you think about it the same can be said about suiting. The Italians prefer suiting that is lighter with less lining and canvas/fabric thickness, whereas the British and to a certain extent the Americans prefer heavier, more solid-feeling suits that feel more like armor than a second skin. This does not mean one type of suiting is lower quality than the other; they are just two different approaches to the same piece of clothing, and for the most part the same can be said about shoe construction!

      It says "GOODYEAR" on the sole. These are a little bit more expensive ones.

    • @IllinoisTrafficAttorney
      @IllinoisTrafficAttorney 6 років тому +1

      I don't know, I think Blake stitching isn't as high end as Goodyear welt. With the Goodyear welt, you have a separate piece of leather that is attaching the upper to the outsole and that can reduce wear on the upper because the welt can be replaced. In contrast, Blake Stitch shoes use the upper itself to Anchor the outsole so I feel it would hurt the shoes lie for the long run. But then again I'm an American who really loves my Goodyear welt and dislikes Italian styles because they're built for slim people with slim profiles which I'll never be

    Or go used and check second hand and thrift stores and buy a high end shoe for 5 to 30 dollars, I see and buy them all the time and a little elbow grease to polish and clean them and one ends up with a good 300 to 500 dollar pair of quality shoes ie AE, Alden, etc for under 1
    60 dollars. And, AE has a refurbishing process you can send them to the factory and they'll restore them for 125 bucks, I routinely buy Allen Edmonds at thrift stores for 3 to 10 dollars and clean them up but Even If I spring for refurbing , I'll still be in it for less than 150 theyll look new, and theyll last me another 5 to 10 years + depending how I wear them and care for them.

    Unless you are flat broke and need shoes for a job interview so you can get back on your feet, there is no reason to buy a A $65 pair of shoes. Buy a pair of $350 - $450 shoes and wear them for life and have something worth having. A $400 pair of shoes is hundreds of times better than a $65 pair of shoes but an $800 pair of shoes is not even twice as good as a $400 pair. It is a case of diminishing returns. After you hit about $400 to $450 you add very little more value no matter how much money you throw at them.

    Santoni shoes are worth it IF you can afford it.
    The under 100$ shoes are generally not worth it. It may seem they are a god deal when you buy them but I have seen a lot of them that don't hold up. You may think you will get a decent amount of wears out of them (considering the price that would mean a great price / wear) but after a few times they just look bad. They don't take product so well and even if you use some quality shoe cream and shoe polish you will not make them look good for long. In the beginning the price / wear for a good pair of shoes is not that small but because you can use them for so long (even resole it a few times) the price / wear will go down a lot.
    If you can't afford Santoni shoes there are always good shoes that cost something around 250$ and they will make a MUCH better deal then the 65$ in the long run.

  • @thomasfisher1829

    A goodyear welt means it can be resoled, not that it has exposed stitching. In fact exposed stitching is usually considered a compromise in looks to add the value of being able to resole the shoe. That is why bespoke shoes usually don't have a welt around the heal, and why most italian style shoes use blake stitched construction to avoid the exposed stitching entirely

    • @gentslounge

    How do I know if I have an authentic pair of Santoni. They look the same except I notice that the sole of your pair had a part that wasn't orange, almost like a scuff that was there on purpose...and your thoughts on a pair of Paul Evans?

    • @gentslounge
      @gentslounge  5 років тому +1

      The soles are hand painted so all of them will be a little different. Paul Evans is a well made shoe. If it fits with your style you won't be disappointed.

    Some of these brands are just no more than hyped up products actually,yes they are quality i am not gonna lie there,but pass a certain point youre going down the ever narrowing point of diminishing returns.if it were me, 300 to 450 would be the cut off point for me. Bespoke or limited exotic shoes shoes aside,various good shoes at that price point. Eg. Loake,allen edmonds,meermin,magnanni etc...

  • @RevJamesCostello
    @RevJamesCostello 6 років тому +7

    No, no, NO! Those cheap shoes are NEVER worth it! The logic doesn’t make sense. ‘Well, if you only dress up once a month, just get the cheap ones.’ No, if you dress up smart once a month, you WANT those shoes to be special. ALWAYS invest in good quality. If you dress up once a month, you have your quality go-to shoes. That way those quality shoes will last you for DECADES! Makes sense. My choice for smart shoes would be Church’s or Crockett & Jones.

    • @gentslounge
      @gentslounge  6 років тому +1

      If you can afford to go nice we recommend that as well! It's just that with, dressing up once a month a cheaper pair of shoes will still last you 3+ years at that rate.

      Jared, My comment should have a hundred likes. Oh well. I just keep on spreading the good word. Church’s Shannon for work today. Understated quality. Beautiful lustre, easy to maintain, comfortable and ethical. If a person wants a quality pair, they can usually be found for half the retail price. So there’s no excuse.

      @@jr4chargers Not really. Too many guys spend money on clothes, watches and accessories and then wear a pair of shoes that look like they kicked a brick to work. Once you have crappy shoes, it undoes everything. I you are into shoes, it it very easy to spot. Walk into a high end clothing stores and see what they do from far off. They spot you, look at your clothes and then they look down.
      Rainy slushy weather? I wore my cordovan Crockett and Jones. Why? That is what they were made for and they had Dainite soles and storm welts. Also the the "leather" (membrane really) has tight pores to keep moisture out. If they fail, then they suck and I would tell the world, but they didn't.
      Would I buy Santoni? No, I think I am paying a premium for the name, but I do like them. So many properly made GYW and Blake stitched shoes in the $400 range. Better leather, better looking, easier to maintain and fix, proper styles available for any occasion.

    The Santoni quality is bar none (no pun intended) much better quality. Most of the population will find the ~$300 To Boot New York as the best shoe which is needed. Better than the Kenneth Cole/Steve Madden and not the Ferragamo/Santoni/etc dress shoes.
    To Boot is my favorite brand for dress shoes and Thursday/Taft for my boots. Wolverine is great too.

    Letaher in expensive shoes creases just as much as any other leather.
    Goodyear welted means the shoe can be resoled quite easily.
    The Goodyear line is hand finished, not hand made.

    No shoe...is worth $800. Likewise...no shoe is worth paying $60 either. Better off...going with an Allen Edmonds, Alden, or even a little higher quality, used English made shoe, such as Trickers, or Church's. One needs to spend at least $400 for a pair of men's shoes. Re-sole them for your entire life. A Santoni...used, at half their original cost would be fine. Get a used pair of $800 shoes, for half price...have them re-soled, and you will have made a sound purchase. Never buy a $60 shoe...or a $100 shoe...or really...anything less than about $400. Truly the best and most practical brand new show buy...would be a Thursday shoe. They are a few dollars cheaper than $400, and their quality is quite high for a shoe under $400. Thursday shoes...are not the best...but they can be re-soled, and the leather is a decent leather. Probably the most practical buy on the market for a man. Good luck everyone...just don't get taken on a high profile name, like Gucci, or Prada...that will cost a fortune...and are really inferior shoes. Do your homework...and make a sound purchase. Nothing wrong with purchasing a used high end shoe...that one can re-sole, get for half it's original price...and have a practically brand new shoe. Good luck.

    So if I'm honest and don't pretend that I'm going to actually care for my shoes, I should just buy cheap ones?
    And another thing I'd be honest about, I think I'd get sick of something, anything, I've had for 20+ years, or probably even just 10. Name something material that's been a constant in your life for even ten years, and tell me you wouldn't want something else, something new, something different, something better. Even with an $800 pair of shoes, at some point(probably before 20 years' time) you'll always want something different, I know I would.
    We live in an ephemeral disposable goods society which you could say is built on a garbage heap of junk, and most people get more of a high out of buying new things than actually caring for their old things. Shopping is our favorite pastime, an individual and national obsession, and it's something we've shared, ah spread, to the rest of the world. Maybe it's advertising and the like, or just human nature, but nonetheless, it is our culture, always wanting new things, more things, better things, regardless of whatever we may already have, even an $800 pair of shoes to die for.
    So when my $40 Bar III shoes/soles go bad, I'll just get another pair, and I doubt it'll be in two or three months' time, something crazy like that. I"ve had $25 shoes that literally lasted me years of regular wear walking up to three miles or more a day.
