- Lizi is back from her holiday! I persuade her to come with me in the plane to Shobdon in Herefordshire for breakfast. I've never been here before and have been saving this trip as one to do with Lizi. It's a hot sunny day at the end of June 2019 so we're cookin' in the Eurostar. I win a bet, Lizi critiques my landing and talks about her trip to Asia.

Good to see you in Shobdon with your good friend. It has a lot of pedigree that place. It was the scene of one of the first parachute clubs in Great Britain - as an SAS skydiver my father Terry Jick was one of the instructors. A lot of the regiment of jumped from there (SAS) alongside many happy civilians. Good flight. Mark

Great video, good to see you both together again and having fun. Loved how she "enjoyed" your first landing back together, does Lizzi ever want to take the controls just for safety reasons. When Lizi brings the Tunnocks she should be in Rory flight attendant uniform!
Mikey's wings across the sky yeah. I have demonstrated how to fly straight and level and how to press the radio for help but Lizi isn’t keen on flying really - she just likes the view and to watch me do the work!

Jason R Wilkinson I take it you mean 26R? Yeah, I did consider it but as there was so much runway available I was happy to have a go. As you see the result wasn’t neat, or quick so a useful lesson learned. It’s lovely to have Lizi back.

It's great having Lizi back with you on your flights, she sure seemed happier after she had a bite to eat but did she have a little drink with that meal? she was a little giddy afterwards.....lol Nah she was just happy to be home I guess, don't forget to make her pay up on the golf course bet ;-) Spot on Rory, thanks for taking us along!!!

Thanks Ben. Yes, Shobdon or welshpool could be great places for us to meet up. The 360 footage has the potential to be much better than that when I can get the proper plugins to work.

Rory On Air Nice to hear. I've yet to view your videos of that. I've driven past it many times 'Welshpool International Airport'? LOL. IIRC, I flew into Shobdon years ago with my dad (about 40/45 mins from our then base near Fairford). Looks very nice nowadays.

Gareth White yeah, I think you changed the runway right after we all landed. I was glad you didn’t do it while we were in the circuit as it would have been bedlam. I was all ready to go for Hulton just to keep clear!

Great video, really like Shobdon. Only a 20 min flight from me and it was my first land away airfield (with instructor) so has great memories.
Had my first solo nav last week and guessing Shobdon will be my first solo land away too.

Great video again Rory! Quick question - Is there an option of an opposite runway available at Manchester Barton so that you could have landed into a headwind and not had a tailwind?
JerSher yeah, you can ask for whatever runway you like as long as it’s open, but as there was so much length I was happy to continue at Shobdon.

Wondered why you elected to fly that huge noise abatement circuit in an ultralight? The microlight circuit on the chart would seem appropriate, but I'm not hugely up to speed with microlight / ultralight ops!
Yeah, I would have been better flying the tighter circuit but I hadn't been before so was just being over cautious.

Regarding joining the circuit, why didn’t you just cross the numbers at circuit height and join crosswind instead of the overhead join?
Shane Fleming good question. I tend to do an overhead join at new airfields if that is their procedure because I think it’s good for situational awareness plus I can have a look at the taxiways etc. Also, Shobdon have glider activity up to 1500ft in the north side of the runways and a circuit on the south side at 1000 so what you describe would have me descending into crosswind potentially on top of people climbing out.

My question too. Don't be bullied by ATC to exit the runway early if you are still travelling fast. It will only cost the following aircraft a go around, it might cost you a prop strike or collapsed undercarriage.

Perhaps because if you have problems and go down, they know how many people they need to find. We also generally give our expected endurance (how much fuel we have on board, essentially). Information like this helps with SAR if it is ever needed.
