Especially how she picks things up and uses her own judgement while listening, i would love to have a student like that onboard my yacht. She also asks alot how things work. So Chris when are you going to take her on a multi day trip to learn things under sail?
So much information to remember and execute in the the proper sequence. This beautiful young lady is handling a high stress environment with calm efficiency!
After 7 days of sailing with my family in the gulf islands, my adult daughter and I are watching this video as a refresher of the things she learned on the trip. It’s not so much teaching her to sail as much as reminding her of what she learned sailing as a kid. Thanks for posting.
Fabulous! I’m a newbie sailor who just purchased a Catalina 28... littlest “big boat” I could find. So far, it’s all engine and systems and setup. It is extremely helpful getting to watch someone else going through the thought processes I have when learning and to hear your commentary. I’m going to be replaying this over and over. Thank you both!
Very beautiful daughter Christian! She is learning from the Pro that’s for sure. Splendid video and looks like she is learning well but still a little nervous but I know that is coming from wanting your approval of what she is doing. She arrived into the slip like a pro herself!
A great lesson in sailing. Very calm, patient student and instructor. It's great to see Alex's progress from her last lesson. Much more confident, and more skilled.
My buddy and I just completed our ASA 103 Basic Keelboat course about a month ago. We also just bought a 21’ 1976 Aquarius to practice on while we restore it. This is a great watch to learn teamwork and how helmsman and crew affect the success or failure of each sail by how well they learn to work together. We will watch many times over. Thanks for all your hard work to make these videos possible. Ray and Dave. UA-cam “Adventures with Ray and Dave.”
What a fantastic video! You are a terrific instructor and sailor, Christian. I'm a beginner sailor and have learned so much from watching your channel. Working toward ASA 103 now with only about 25 hours of time under sail on 22's and 27's, and every time I watch a video like this one, it gives me more knowledge and confidence to keep progressing.
Not only are you teaching your daughter to sail a large boat but you are making memories with her that will last her the rest of her life and will be worth more to her than gold. You are an incredible father and she is a loving daughter, you guys are so lucky to have each other. God bless and thank you for these videos, I have thoroughly enjoyed them.
Thank you for sharing this moment Christian. I have learned a lot just by watching and listening to your videos. Looking at buying my first boat soon. Cheers 🍻
You are a great mentor. It is hard to find someone with such a calm and didactic mindset. I am working as a sailor on a home-built sailboat based on Gilbert Caroff's Chatam 47 design, we do trips in the south of Portugal. There is always something to learn. Thanks for your videos.
Thank you for your books, audiobooks, and videos. They are so unassuming and real. Thank you to your daughter for demonstrating the how-to aspects from the standpoint of a relative newbie. She has such a great attitude! Fantastic job Ms. Alex. THANK YOU!!
The language of sailing. Laced with calmness and experience is a pleasure to behold.Great respect coming your way Christian. Alex will be fine with such a dad. Cheers from Australia. Kindest regards from Steve
Brilliant! We’re a family of 4 (kids 9 and 13) about to go out taking course with a certified sailing school. This video took out a lot of the jitters. Key takeaway... stay calm thru it all, and practice, practice practice. I also liked the way you watched Alex’s progression, let her go thru each maneuver, and then explained what improvements needed to be made based on conditions. Your a great teacher as well!
Sailing schools are only going teach you to work one winch at a time with you crew (other classmates). Learning to work both main winches at the same time like she is trying to do is not part of the certification or test. If you want to sail solo and learn to work both at the same time, you will have to learn on your own time like she is doing. If you are in the USA buy the book "Sailing Made Easy" off Amazon. That will be you class book to you to read and learn to pass the written exam.
I agree more content from you is a blessing. As an instructor you are good IMO. You are not only teaching your daughter you are teaching me. Watching sailing vlogs for over a year and just now I learned more about what the heck is going on than in all those other hours of vlogs. Thank you.
These videos will really help me learn how to use the winches and all the lines on a larger boat. I learned on a sunfish then a 16' Hobie Cat, which was a rocket and a blast to sail.
Hope to do as good job with my daughter as you did with yours! Thanks for being you and putting yourself out there just as a star to point towards in our lives
She's a fantastic student and you're a patient teacher...I would feel very safe with the two of you onboard! She would feel more confident with a few more outings, bravo my dear, bravo!
I used to be a 'tall ship' enthusiast, many years ago. Seeking sea going adventures at a formative age became the source of an incurable wanderlust and adventurous spirit. It now feels like several lifetimes ago yet I'm curious to find it still there. I now live in an apartment with a balcony overlooking the Broadwater on the Gold Coast - Australia. I watch the yachts at anchor, sometimes straining at their anchor cables, yearning to head out past the breakwater and back to sea. As I watch your videos and listen to your calm, measured delivery as you impart your knowledge and philosophy to your daughter, I'm finding myself straining at my own anchor cable. Time to cast off. Thank you for your inspiration Christian. If you ever start the Christian Williams School of Philosophy & Sailing, you can count me in!
Well, I feel ready to get my first boat now. :) But seriously, seeing you two keep the healthy father and daughter relationship and such fantastic recreation routines at this age... I mean, Alex is probably a mother to two generations herself and still learns things from her dad, like a little kid. I feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I am really happy for your family Christian! That is a mighty legendary accomplishment I feel nowhere near to be able to pull off myself. Thanks a lot for your videos!
I really appreciate you sharing this with us. A special time indeed between Father and daughter. I plan to teach my kids and Gkids to sail soon as well.
The first boat I owned was a 50' motor yacht. I wasn't planning on buying such a large boat; it just happened that way. Everyone said I was crazy, that I should start much smaller. I had sailed and motored smaller boats some, the largest being 28 feet. But it just took some time, practice, study and patience to get things down. Once I got used to it, the 50' boat actually handled as easy, if not easier, than the smaller boats. And once I got used to the twin engines, docking became easier. People adapt to the situations they are put in if they have open minds. Alex did that wonderfully, and Dad helped to get her there. Thanks for the great sailing lesson!
I will certainly recommand these videos to my nephew who is starting to learn how to sail (he does'nt want his uncle as a teacher but he wishes to sail with me on my sailboat next year). I might translate the converation in French. Your daughter is also a very good learner and has a lot of courage to do these manoeuvres in front of the camera. As usual, great video. Thanks!
Beautiful to watch you two interact. Anticipating challenges and allowing your daughter to handle them safely while maintaining a calm atmosphere is truly a gift. Not to mention the added workload of coherently filming "a simple afternoon of sailing". Well done. Eager to see the next episode.
I wrote that before the last bit, sailing is about confidence, worrying about other boats or being to remote from other people being to close to land or too far from land is all in your own head. I have two sons one freaks out if he sees rocks near the other when our little island country disappears over the horizon its just our own personal cross to bear we have to get used to it. Me I prefer fewer people which Is why I sail alone in remote places :)
I understand part 3 will be coming out soon hopefully there will be many more videos than this series. I often play around Catalina, I've noticed since finding your series and subscribing that I now check out every sail boat I see hoping to run into you, I really like the series and I'm learning a lot. Thank you.
Thank you thank you thank you for this series. You’re a wonderful teacher, and there’s a ton of information for a novice sailor here! Also nice to see father and daughter spending quality time together :). I would’ve loved to have some of these moments with my pop…
Watching these videos has awakened something in me I didn’t even know was there... I live close enough to the Gulf coast of Florida that sailing lessons are now something I’ll be signing up for. Several highly recommended schools that offer 7 day courses are within an easy five hour drive from Atlanta. As my skills progress there are different levels of instruction so I’m really looking forward to getting underway. Thanks for the inspiration!!
You're a constant source of inspiration sir... enjoyed you book and videos. You are a lucky man to have a daughter wanting to take the helm... Bravo to you both for sharing.
Thank you both! I felt like I was back on board a sailboat with Captain Rick. Beautiful boat, beautiful people, beautiful day, beautiful job. I want to start everyday like this.
I've been going through the exact same learning curve with my own daughter (we are all similar ages) so I can really relate. I love your videos. You're a much better teacher than I am.
That was really good. I just did my seamanship exam will be working on the navigation then practical...wish you were my teacher! Alex reminded me of me saying the past experience was coming back a bit...one of the more entertaining videos you have put out! Thank you
Love your videos. very educational.. I am considering buying a boat, might be able to afford one by the time I am 50, so watch these to learn about sailing..Your films tend to be humorous, entertaining, inspirational, and a good source of information on the subject of sailing...You guys make a good team.
I really enjoy your videos. This was a nice video with your lovely daughter, and I think you are a great teacher. Informative and reassuring while also being kind and understanding. We should all have those attributes!! Very well done.
I'd like to sail one day, and your videos are more informative and reassuring than others. This is the only sailing channel I am subscribed to. My main barrier is that I live on the Columbia River, and the mouth to the Pacific scares the shit out of me.
a suggestion: when releasing the genoa sheet, don't let it go loose, but wait for sail to back wind then 'walk' the clew across; less flapping/stress on sail, less sheets flying about to get fouled.... and can help move bow through the wind.
This is awesome your a great teacher, this reminds me of watching your home movies you narrated of trips with your family when you were a kid, and now your with yours teaching her. Excellent.
Very kool Christian. It was nice to see some teaching. I have read a whole lot about sailing but it would be crazy to have my own sail boat and cast off to a place miles away with the wind in my sails. Your a inspiration to the sailing community. I just turned sixty and I need to cross the pond to some where I have never been. Fair winds Around Bend Oregon out!
Alex is getting close to her own single (or short-handed) adventure albeit, a possibly shorter adventure than the Northern Pacific Islands of Hawaii. She seemed to settle those nerves and allow her overall confidence in knowing what and where is half the battle plus she seems to be a quick learner who retains knowledge. Oh, well done for taking the 110v of electrical cable to the dockside :-)
"Thank you so much for sharing" would be rather lame said to describe how thankful I am for the opportunity following your lessons. Many greetings from between the Central European mountains and far far away from open water.
Thank you very much Christian! I enjoy watching sailing videos but I have learned more from watching a few of yours than from watching hundreds of others. Don’t get me wrong I love all of them, well most of them, but yours are very instructive. Thank you.
I would have never thought this would be so difficult. But after watching this video I’m ready to purchase a 40 footer and circumnavigate the globe. Wish me luck and Thanks for all your help.
Hi , TK from Uganda, loved the lesson with your daughter, you were a great teacher , and she was a great student, especially the way she handled the time you shouted to her to hurry up, I saw a lot of myself in you , i learnt from her advice to you , great job to both of you , cant wait to teach my daughter, haha aha
It would be extremely hard to find a cuter student and just as hard for her to find a better teacher. You’re both lucky. 3 thumbs up ! Enjoyed riding along with you.
Loved watching how you handled the sail & winches. Position self in middle use lines & winches simultaneously. You teach just like my father, he will not tell you what you’ve done wrong you must review steps however just as you did explain and correct. Researching to begin small boat purchase & learn then liquidate big boat & off we go. Fortunately I live in Florida & can practice in the Gulf; bays & the ever loved ICW.

I have a few questions about the Marika story, but obviously best left for private chat. Thoroughly enjoyed the book, read it in two sittings!
No disrespect to you or your daughter, but she is very beautiful! You and your wife must be good looking folks😊
@х х😅х9х х😅😮1У
Kudos to your daughter for accepting to be your student in front of the camera! 😉 (on behalf of all of us watching and learning)
Kayl712 Agreed.

Another excellent video. Loving the father/daughter bonding experiential-learning process. Learn by doing and retain for a lifetime. Thank you
I have been a bit obsessed with sailing videos for a while, this so far is the best how to sail video I have seen, thank you.
yes,the best among the dozens of videos seen and I am not native English speaker.GRAZIE
This is really nice to see and a special time when daughters take an interest in their fathers' interests. Great instruction and a willing student.
Please do more videos of this type, they are excellent.
Very beautiful daughter Christian! She is learning from the Pro that’s for sure. Splendid video and looks like she is learning well but still a little nervous but I know that is coming from wanting your approval of what she is doing. She arrived into the slip like a pro herself!

Yep memories that will last the both of them a lifetime nothing more precious than that.
Thank you for sharing this moment Christian. I have learned a lot just by watching and listening to your videos. Looking at buying my first boat soon. Cheers 🍻
HarryJVaughn3 same here he is great help for learning
Did you get a boat?
You are a great mentor. It is hard to find someone with such a calm and didactic mindset. I am working as a sailor on a home-built sailboat based on Gilbert Caroff's Chatam 47 design, we do trips in the south of Portugal. There is always something to learn. Thanks for your videos.
Best sailing instructional video ever! And your subject did really well 👍
Thank you for your books, audiobooks, and videos. They are so unassuming and real. Thank you to your daughter for demonstrating the how-to aspects from the standpoint of a relative newbie. She has such a great attitude! Fantastic job Ms. Alex. THANK YOU!!

Well done by both of you.
She is adorable. Thanks for another great video.
Hope to do as good job with my daughter as you did with yours!
Thanks for being you and putting yourself out there just as a star to point towards in our lives
I'm just going to say it... your daughter is lovely. And, you work together so well. Great video. Thank you.
Well done Alex! Becoming a sailor isn't easy, but it is fun!
i love how good of a teacher you are CHRISTIAN and your Daughter is a Champion thank you thank you thank you
She's a fantastic student and you're a patient teacher...I would feel very safe with the two of you onboard! She would feel more confident with a few more outings, bravo my dear, bravo!
I know nothing of sailing however watching these videos has got me excited to learn. NZers love the water. Looking forward to the next post 👍

It has a real draw. I want a life on the sea and I've barely even been on boats. I'm an old man now, but it's always held a lot of appeal to me.

I really appreciate you sharing this with us. A special time indeed between Father and daughter. I plan to teach my kids and Gkids to sail soon as well.
wow Alex is a champ ,,,,,, better sailer than most of my friends that have been sailing for decades ,,, 10 outa 10

Dad is like Yoda. What a great teacher in sailing. Soon she will be the master.
What a great teacher you are. And, what and apt - and beautiful - student your daughter is.
Congratulations to you both!!!
Thank you thank you thank you for this series. You’re a wonderful teacher, and there’s a ton of information for a novice sailor here!

You might look into the Astoria Yacht Club. They're always looking for crew for their racing. Great way to learn.
Good going dad, nice work by Alex as well

How do you get through a doorway? I think he knows what he’s doing…
Learning a lot...this is such a great format for us learning to sail. Thank you and keep ‘em coming!
This is awesome your a great teacher, this reminds me of watching your home movies you narrated of trips with your family when you were a kid, and now your with yours teaching her. Excellent.
This video is great. I myself and learning how to tack/jibe single handed and listening to him instruct her on it is lots of help.
Excellent video for new sailors, or a refresher.⛵ Your daughter Alex is strong, great video all around!
Cheers from IRELAND very easy to follow even for someone that's never been on a sailboat thanks and keep them coming.
Very kool Christian. It was nice to see some teaching. Man, i appreciate this video so much. Thank you for posting it.
She’s got a good teacher. 👍 we all do. Thanks for bringing us along on your journeys
Best crew ever. Fast learning and super cute. That is why sailing is fun.
Great video. Theoretically I've learned a lot about sailing just by watching this. I definitely want to try it.
"Thank you so much for sharing" would be rather lame said to describe how thankful I am for the opportunity following your lessons. Many greetings from between the Central European mountains and far far away from open water.
Every time that I run the clip I' learn something.Thank you for this educational journey.
You both are superb. Amazing how smart the lady is.
I love taking out new people and explaining why , reminds me of my first time
you're teaching us both at the same time! lol You daughter is SO LUCKY SHE HAS YOU of All People! Wish we were buds!
That's a beautiful boat💯 I grew up sailing and miss it a lot it's a nature walk on the water! Thanks for sharing your videos!!👍👍
Thank you very much Christian! I enjoy watching sailing videos but I have learned more from watching a few of yours than from watching hundreds of others. Don’t get me wrong I love all of them, well most of them, but yours are very instructive. Thank you.
Just listened to Alone Together - great book. This series is great too - I’m getting a bigger boat soon. Thanks for your insights!
Nice to have a deckhand to slip-in dialogue (and learning comments) to your videos, though your monologues and reflections are always a favorite.
Another fine update in more ways than one.! Thank you very much for sharing.! Thumbs up to you both.! Well done.!
Thank you both great video. Alex is very courageous!!.You schould be a very proud papa.
I would have never thought this would be so difficult. But after watching this video I’m ready to purchase a 40 footer and circumnavigate the globe. Wish me luck and Thanks for all your help.
Such clear training steps and heart-warming bonding with daughter. I hope I can have the same with my daughter on boat one day.
Great video. Alex did awesome. Hey I remember this guy... Hawaii and back ! Be safe ya'll
Excellent again. Learned much. Video and instructions were perfect.
Thanks for the lesson Christian. Much appreciated
What a great tutor. Thanks. I needed that.
Great to see you sharing your experience and transferring your skills in a very nice way. Look forward to seeing more , it’s a great tutorial..😊👍
Once again a wonderful video. Thanks for having us aboard!
Although I have limited sailing experience , and this is probably a great learning video , I thank our Father and creator , for fast forward.
Great job and I look forward to the next lesson. A great teacher and a super student if.
Rory (Ireland)
This is awesome, way to go Alex!!! Fair winds and following seas. Cheers from the Channel Islands California!
Très bien expliqué! Merci Christian 👌👌
That brings up memories. Sailed through there many times
iv been watching alot of your videos and iv come here because i thought about purchasing a 26ft sailboat and loved your journey to Hawaii video
As always, a great video. Learning to sail from these!
Thanks for this "online sailing course". Great work.
Really impressed by this set of "how to" vids. And also the work with the subs', not all channels do that. Hats of 🎩
