Just got this box set from Ebay and freaked out realising there's counterfeits. Ive been had before with the Pink Floyd counterfeits, and I'm so glad that mine is used, but real! Its such an amazing box set and I'd be heartbroken if I was stuck with a fake. This video really helped!
@@MagicalMysteryMike I remember when the first Capitol Mono/Stereo sets first came out...it was awful! The covers were blurry... wrong cd's in wrong covers... Thank you for the exhaustive comparison. I'm happy to note that my set is authentic. However, there is only one difference, or absence that I've noticed in my box set. Mine does not carry any FBI warning. Maybe because it says mine is "Printed in the E.U."? Also, below that line is printed "Exempt from Classification". Can you kindly comment on this difference?

I do not believe I ever tried to play any of them for the video. I suppose at some point I’ll delve into that, but after spending a week with that nightmare, I need a breather... literally.
@@MrDavidReads I was thinking that too, but then remembered they sold these individually too. The DVD compiled with them all was just for the box set. But if say someone only wanted Abbey Road for their collection they got the video with that too.
It’s good that you mentioned that also the sound quality on those fake CD’s are degraded, just imagine if the sound quality on those fakes are just 4bits or 8bits,then it is no question why to avoid this trash.
How bad is the audio tracks on the cds? Are they copies of the 2009 remasters? I’ve heard from forums that the fake mono box tracks are actually stereo tracks.
@@MagicalMysteryMike glad I bought mine back in 09. I added Japanese rice sleeves to mine and added resealable digipak sleeves. It looks better than ever. I’ve also heard there’s bootleg US album box sets as well.
Apparently my set is fake. I've had it since 2009 lol. I ripped all the tracks as 320kbps mp3s years ago and they sound fine. So I guess I at least got a good sounding but counterfeit box set. :(
Thanks, you helped me identity the boxset I won on Ebay a little while back, I was so pleased with myself too! Mine had the additional problem that none of the discs would play without skipping and jumping all over the place. I got refunded but I wish I was aloud to keep it so I could throw it about too, but the seller demanded it back in the same condition! Why, i have no idea. Today is Christmas and my wife got me a genuin pristine boxset still in it's cellophane and completely unopened, God I love her!❤
Mike, on eBay there is a set with each of the cds in plastic wrap, but no outer wrap. In the original true set, are these disks in plastic? Also, on your video 3, the documentaries appears to miss the capital logo on the fake. Great job on the videos. Enjoyed your humor and details. Amazon cancelled my order for an original so I'm off looking for a trusted true box set. Thanks!
@@thomaskopeck9774 The true set does have each album individually wrapped, but that's not an indicator of an official item, as the counterfeits were also sealed. In addition, later pressings may not have had the individual albums sealed. They are each the same in the box as were individually offered for sale. I do have a video up of the actual box if you're interested. ua-cam.com/video/lTBUPHZljig/v-deo.html
My counterfeit "Magical and Mystery Tour" copy has "The Beatles in mono" logo printed on the front of the slipcase. On the spine of the "Let it be" album you can read "with the beatles". The recording of some CDs have some issues, the original sources must have had scratches.
Woah, these look far more horrendous than the early albums. But I do have a beef even with the real Past Masters, I wish they could have made it look like the 1988 package, loved Mark's album notes rather than Kevin's, but I digress.
"Horrendous" is being kind. Agree on the disappointment of the original notes being left off. The updated notes are fine, but it's a shame the original were not included as well, similar to what was done with the Pepper booklet.
It's so sad that The Beatles had a falling out with Mark L. He has provided an amazing service to Battle fans everywhere. Looking forward to his future books
Have you taken your Xanax lately? LOL. I'm going to do a comparison myself as far as the contents of the discs. TBH the music on the CDs didn't sound any different than the official versions. I admit I didn't listen to them all nor did I watch the DVD, Well it's a holiday weekend! It's a good reason to get the Box of Vision (Where my fake CDs are located) out. Have you bought the 16/44 Anthology Remasters and Love bonus tracks from Qobuz yet?
Hahaha. No Xanax necessary; dealing with the fake was quite cathartic. ;) The fake discs may sound ok, but they’re not full CD quality. At least I’m never going to say they sound as good as the official. They’re definitely not an audiophile’s delight, that’s for sure. I wouldn’t want to even encourage anyone who doesn’t already own The Beatles catalogue to consider the counterfeit as an option. It really cheapens The Beatles legacy.
@@MagicalMysteryMike I'm not trying to start an argument. I do have a different pressing than you and there are no issues with the sound, I ripped the counterfeit Rubber Soul and a legitimate one. On my page I showed the results of the Accuraterip from EAC and a Dynamic Range test for both. I also showed screenshots of the Waveforms and Spectrogram for the album's first song Drive My Car which I took from Audacity. I'm more than willing to bet that the rest of the results are the same. My findings are here. Click if you so desire, facebook.com/groups/AlbumOfTheMoment/
@@DetroitRockCitizen No argument perceived. I deliberately avoided the topic of sound quality, because I do not want to encourage people to seek out the counterfeit as a good source of the '09 remasters.
Thanks MMM, I 've got the stereo box set (USA) with FBI logo....from Flea market ...good price at $75usd. Sounds good as compared to my 87 full collection (some of the disc already deteriorate with see thru holes) .Thks for the fake guides. Cheers!
Excellent. Reasonably priced used box sets are definitely available, as you’ve illustrated. This is all the more reason to avoid these fakes. I’m surprised to hear your ‘87 are deteriorated! I’ve got multiple copies of the ol’ 87s and they’re in great condition. Interesting. Anything is possible after 34 years, I suppose.
Hi Mike, I've got three things to say about your videos on these counterfeits. 1. Good videos! 2. Since you've listed and showed the differences so clearly, future counterfeit makers will probably not make the same mistakes, which will make those future fakes much harder to distinguish from the real thing. Which could be problematic... 3. Is there a difference between the actual m u s i c of the real release and the fake one? Cheers, Micha
I think future counterfeiters will continue to be unable to reproduce the photos properly, since they don’t possess the original negatives of the photos. They will continue to rely on scans of hopefully the original printed photos. Plus the difficulty and cost of getting the prints onto the creases of the inside folds.
1. Thank you! 2. Unlikely the quality of counterfeits will ever match the originals. The point is to make a profit as cheaply as possible. Quality control does not seem to be a huge motivator. 3. These are digital transfers, but from where? If you are lucky enough to get the proper transfer, you’d better hope the disc itself isn’t damaged by glue transfer from the cheep packaging.
very interesting...i had a mono box from amazon which was a fake...they sent me a new one and told me to keep the fake one...there were many, many mistakes in the language used in the booklet - that is what alerted me to it.
@@MagicalMysteryMike Thanks for this. when I saw this video, I checked my 2009 box set and I was a fake!! Luckily I found one on Amazon for a decent price! 😂😂😂
@@MagicalMysteryMike I don’t know. I got their name from a Google search. Their full name came up as Qinghe County Caiyun Culture Media Co., Ltd. They could have just authored DVDs.
@@DetroitRockCitizen Are you sure? It came up on mine once, but then it wouldn't play again until I put another disc in, then tried the Mini-Doc. DVD again.
Considering the fairly low price of used genuine individual releases or even new when reduced online why bother with the box set at all. One exception is the Beatles in mono which are not available to buy as individual discs. That said the first few 1987 releases were available in mono.
Great video! I have been sent a counterfeit US Albums box, wrong cds in the wrong pockets. It also contained the cheap plastic bags. It's laughable. Luckily I was refunded fully.
Indeed, it is rather laughable. I haven't seen the fake US Albums box set, but I'm sure it's a lot of the same outlined in these videos. Very happy for you that you realized you'd received a counterfeit and were able to get a full refund.
Did you keep the 💩 box? I have one too, and it's so terrible. Apart from the discs being in the wrong covers and the quality being horrendous, the CDs mostly play terribly as well.
I got too keep mine as well and I haven't even tried playing them haha. I think it's great to spread the awareness. Have Been enjoying the channel a lot btw. 😀
Funnily enough the original cover photo for Abbey Road was indeed lighter than the final product as it was made a darker blue during production to make the day seem sunnier.
Interesting. The Who Who's Next implements a similar trick. Whatever aesthetic tricks were done on Abbey Road, they were undone by the counterfeiters. It looks horrible.
Meh. I suppose. It'll have to be destroyed at some point. No need to have it pass through any other hands. Was glad to have it to make these videos, after seeing how many are still being sold.
My US born cousin sent me the box set. Months later when I watched a footage from UA-cam, I was told that there were fakes about. Guess what. The box set is fake. The sound quality is good, but shame about the design of the covers.
Meh. It’s not necessarily difficult to replicate digital files; however, the quality of the materials and the overall quality control is lacking. Discs skip, sometimes the entire disc is wrong, etc. This fake set is not the way to go. One will always be better off waiting a bit longer to save for the real deal.
13:55 Ahhh yes my favorite Beatles Paul MCCarirmy George took the here come the sun too seriously and changed his last name and added Sun. Paul couldn’t write his name right so he did it a second time and failed again. And the bootlegger told Ringo to start so he did.

I won’t do a detailed comparison of my fake to yours here, partly because it’s more work than I’m interested in doing, and partly because your constant effusions of moral disgust just got a little too much for me. Prolegommenally, I can only compare the outsides of the packaging as I have never removed mine from the shrink wrap. Generally, where there are differences between the fake and the genuine covers, mine often, but not always, follow the fakes. For example, the back of Past Masters does not have the track listing error or the / yours does. And my Revolver fake spells McCartney’s name correctly, but not Harrison’s. Generally, where fuzziness can be seen on your fake, mine appears sharp, though many (but not all) of the photo reproductions evince the same color issues as your fake. I’ve noticed that my fakes commonly lack the Capitol label present on your genuine, and that there are many minor layout differences, such as rearrangement of various icons. However, at the bottom of the mini docs disc the wording suggests it may be due to US/UK packaging differences rather than reproduction errors. Your genuine reads, “Manufactured by Capitol Records”, while your and my fakes read, “(c) 2009 Apple Corps Ltd.” “I’m curious what that Chinese says.” It is the name of a Chinese company called in English QC International.

I do not believe I ever tried to play any of them for the video. I suppose at some point I’ll delve into that, but after spending a week with that nightmare, I need a breather... literally.
@@MagicalMysteryMike after smelling those terrible fumes, you definitely do need a breather.
The regular CDs all have a QuickTime documentary. They're compiled on the final disc, so don't really add much value.
@@MrDavidReads I was thinking that too, but then remembered they sold these individually too. The DVD compiled with them all was just for the box set. But if say someone only wanted Abbey Road for their collection they got the video with that too.
@@BeatleDustino This is correct.
Does anyone know if Yellow Submarine and MM Tour is included with the 50th anniversary??
Do you mean will they be released as box sets? I've wondered this myself.
Just out of curiosity, what does the music sound like, on the fake version?
It’s good that you mentioned that also the sound quality on those fake CD’s are degraded, just imagine if the sound quality on those fakes are just 4bits or 8bits,then it is no question why to avoid this trash.
Well, I mean, you could argue a copy sounds just as good, but the quality of the discs themselves isn't great.
How bad is the audio tracks on the cds? Are they copies of the 2009 remasters? I’ve heard from forums that the fake mono box tracks are actually stereo tracks.
They are copies of the 2009 remasters, but the CDs are cheap quality. There is glue on some of them. They skip, etc. Complete trash.
@@MagicalMysteryMike glad I bought mine back in 09. I added Japanese rice sleeves to mine and added resealable digipak sleeves. It looks better than ever. I’ve also heard there’s bootleg US album box sets as well.
@@newmoonsamesun I’ve heard the same on the US Box, but haven’t seen one.
Today is Christmas and my wife got me a genuin pristine boxset still in it's cellophane and completely unopened, God I love her!❤
Now that's the gift that keeps on giving the whole year long. Merry Christmas!
For sure. Bogus all the way!
If I have discs in this box set that say Made in Canada does that mean it's fake?
Can't say for sure with just that bit of info., but it's not likely. Canadian pressings were made legit.
@@MrDavidReads falling out?
Again that is the Beatles and EMI's doing, not the counterfeiters,
@@MrDavidReads I wasn't aware there was a falling out.
Click if you so desire,

@@DetroitRockCitizen No argument perceived. I deliberately avoided the topic of sound quality, because I do not want to encourage people to seek out the counterfeit as a good source of the '09 remasters.
@@DetroitRockCitizen thanks for the shout out on the FB post.
@@MagicalMysteryMike That I understand.
The one dislike is from the maker of these fake cds
😂 If only it were just one guy making the fakes… this madness could have been stopped long ago.
There is also the George Harrison credit for Baby You’re A Rich Man on the Capital Stereo vinyl box set.
Interesting. Wasn't aware of this.
Hi Mike,
I've got three things to say about your videos on these counterfeits.
Cheers,
Micha
I think future counterfeiters will continue to be unable to reproduce the photos properly, since they don’t possess the original negatives of the photos. They will continue to rely on scans of hopefully the original printed photos. Plus the difficulty and cost of getting the prints onto the creases of the inside folds.
It’s likely the music reproduction or copies will be the same as the original because digital is simply ones and zeroes.
1. Thank you!
I’ve heard tell of the wrong transfers being used. Stereo instead of mono, etc.
very interesting...i had a mono box from amazon which was a fake...they sent me a new one and told me to keep the fake one...there were many, many mistakes in the language used in the booklet - that is what alerted me to it.

@@MagicalMysteryMike Thanks for this. when I saw this video, I checked my 2009 box set and I was a fake!! Luckily I found one on Amazon for a decent price! 😂😂😂
The Chinese writing says “Caiyun Culture”. Caiyun Culture is a media company based in China.
Interesting. It’s a legit company? What would their part in this counterfeit be?
Or was their logo just ripped off too.
@@MagicalMysteryMike I don’t know. I got their name from a Google search. Their full name came up as Qinghe County Caiyun Culture Media Co., Ltd. They could have just authored DVDs.
It's not on my counterfeit copy of the DVD
@@DetroitRockCitizen Are you sure? It came up on mine once, but then it wouldn't play again until I put another disc in, then tried the Mini-Doc. DVD again.
Considering the fairly low price of used genuine individual releases or even new when reduced online why bother with the box set at all. One exception is the Beatles in mono which are not available to buy as individual discs. That said the first few 1987 releases were available in mono.
The box set is nice to have, but you make some fair points.

Meh. It’s not necessarily difficult to replicate digital files; however, the quality of the materials and the overall quality control is lacking. Yes it is, my friend. Yes it is.
Your genuine reads, “Manufactured by Capitol Records”, while your and my fakes read, “(c) 2009 Apple Corps Ltd.”
“I’m curious what that Chinese says.”
It is the name of a Chinese company called in English QC International.
Thanks for the comment. The videos I did on this have continued on much longer than I anticipated.
