This was an amazing start to the 2022 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race! The sheer amount of boats and the skill of the sailors was incredible to watch. Even more incredible was the way they all managed to stay safe and avoid collisions. It was a great showcase of the skill and precision needed to sail in these conditions. Thanks for sharing this amazing event with us!
For those wondering where the penalties occurred, scroll back to just after 40:45. I'm guessing that Hamilton Island wondered if they gave enough room for Law connect to avoid their mutual obstruction of Black Jack, coming in on starboard. It seems to have occurred just outside the three boat zone. Hamilton Island sailed straight on and Law Connect was able to tack underneath, so I think Hamilton Island DID give enough room. It would be nearly impossible to hear a hail for room with this wind. Then just after 41:13, Black Jack was clear ahead of Andoo at the three boat limit. Then Black Jack tacked onto port, losing that initial benefit of rule 18. Black Jack tacked really close to the mark, coming in on port when Andoo had been fetching the mark on starboard the whole time. With Black Jack approaching so close to the mark, Andoo had to do a very tight turn around the mark so they wouldn't collide with Black Jack. They got too close to the mark and fouled it. So, Black Jack might be protested by Andoo for not giving the starboard Andoo enough room under rule 10.
Great coverage. I would have loved to see a bit from the other three starting lines though. Maybe some of the the smaller boats too? Instead of showing the same footage from the four big ones over and over we could have had a bit more from the to two persons maybe?
Black Jack almost caused a collision with Comanche, as a result of turning right in front of her. Comanche was laying the mark on starboard tack, which gives her right of way, which means that she is not supposed to have to avoid the other boats. Comanche was forced into the mark, hitting it, which meant that she had to do three 360 degree turns to absolve herself for hitting the mark. Close sailing, which can cost millions if boats collide. But some awesome sailing action!
@@2Phast4Rocket Black Jack tacked in Comanches water! If Comanche hadn't tacked and subsequently hit the buoy they would have T-boned Black Jack. These are not Lasers at a Wednesday night race but 100ft super Maxis. Black Jacks tack at the mark was 100% wrong and I expect them to get a DSQ from the jury in Hobart.
@@2Phast4Rocket not 100%. Black Jack shouldn't have been there. Had she not been, Andoo Comanche would have gone further. She tried to squeeze between the two but in the end the helm couldn't see the mark and stayed on the ort helm to ensure of avoiding Black Jack.
@@2Phast4Rocket so it's OK to force yourself in front of someone else against the rules, and when they avoid a collision they get a penalty????? At that point it was either a collison or going to close to the mark.
@@2Phast4Rocket Interesting stuff.. It seems that there was an overlap... Also, they have reached the mark-rounding "zone" on the same, starboard tack, but Black Jack tacked to port and did not leave room to the inside boat ... rule 18 ua-cam.com/video/CYagYLSyv9w/v-deo.html
What a blast to watch with my family on Christmas Day after dinner. Fantastic as always! I wonder if Jimmy will go back from commentating to racing if someone beats his record?
For the life of me I couldn't tell when Wild oats infringed on commanche. Early on they tacked and went a different way because of the traffic. I have no idea how law connect and black jack didn't get penalties. I will say that wild oats is really showing it's age.
Looked to me that Wild Oats and half the fleet prevented Comanche from tacking from starboard to port at the obstruction created by the race boundary and the spectator boats.
Amazing coverage and also great because it really showcased the class exhibited on Blackjack and Wild Oats while showing the lack of class, maturity, and needed skill of Winning Jr.
I'm no expert, but if you look at how much better the crew on board comanche trim the main sail compared to wild oats this must make a big difference to the overall speed of the boat. Look at 59mins in for a good example
The entire front pack especially Law Connect and Blackjack owes a penalty turn for preventing Comanche from making their first tack from starboard onto port at the race boundary. Black Jack on port clearly restricted Comanche’s right of way and their ability to round the turning mark cleanly.
A bit more chaos than I expected. Ain't that boat favored? "WHERE AM I GONNA GO?". "PROTEST"! Sea room or port starboard? "We're gonna be in a collision!" "Ef'n idjits", "Ef'n themselves." "I can't believe it, man!" [incomprehensible australian] "Whoa", "Ease the jib, Ease the jib, Ease the jib, Ease the jib, c'mon guys!", [incomprehensible australian." "I don't think it was us", "Sorry" grin. etc. Sounds just like Wednesday night.
The majority of the fleet are smaller family boats. That is why the race is so popular. The foiling boats will be like the maxi boats, fast but not popular. I don't think many families will be foiling anytime soon.
Does Sow Pigs Reef no longer impact the race? I remember that "you would stay well away from that" back in 2014, but there is no mention of it now. Have they continued to blast away at the reef?
The rules are to make the race winnable by a small, family-owned boat. Very few families own ocean-going multi-hull boats. Allowing the maxi boats to compete is really surprising.
I find the "you won't win the race here, but you can lose it" comments interesting, since they've got 600+ miles to fix or screw things up until they reach Hobart. Don't get me wrong, I love seeing these guys drive these boats like they're dinghies, and it certainly is good entertainment, but that comment always makes me smile. If it were true, you'd have all the maxi's dueling it out up the river to the finish.
Yes, the hit the mark, but only because they were avoiding Black Jack. Black Jack almost caused a collision, which is why Comanche was flying the protest flag.
Where was the incident that Wild Oats did a 720 for? Was it prestart as I see nothing after the start? Andoo should have been more pro active when Black Jack needed water for her first tack instead of assuming she had rights. I know nothing about rights so a pro explaining rules would be welcome! First mark was also interesting.....
one of the boats got squeezed at the mark turning and it came into contact with the race marker. you cannot do that for any reason. the offending boat thinks it was squeezed into the spot maybe but they weren't, they were on starboard and cound have charged through
wild oats possible infringement ... at race time 11:30 or video time 42:00, wild oats (WO) to windward of law connect (LC), both on port tack against BlackJack (BJ) on starboard ... LC as give way boat to BJ (port starboard), can either tack or go behind BJ, her choice. If LC chooses to tack & "calls for water" or "room to tack" (avoiding an obstruction), then WO to windward must also tack and give LC room. WO chose to sail on but potentially only infringed if LC called for room, if LC did not call for room, then LC needs to give way, WO in the clear. IF LC did call for room, Wo is in doubtful position. See rules: 10 & 19.2 & 20.1
If you keep the UA-cam coverage this raw, I’ll watch it every year over TV coverage. Definitely for the purists. Well done!

"We're gunna do a 720 - c'mon guys! Why'd we take the jib down? Ohh it's up, I didn't see it! C'mon guys!"
What a mighty race!!

I like when y'all cover some of the other boats at the second turning mark. I like to see the underdogs and small boats too.
Thank you very much for this exciting report I'm enjoying this in The Gambia West Africa
Excellent pre race and race start commentary and tracking.
What a great treat! Thank you for sharing it with us.
Absolutely FANTASTIC coverage!!! Thanks!
Good fluid coverage from Channel 7 this year, very enjoyable!
What a fantastic start and sight!.

Sorry it was 100% Comanche's fault for hitting the buoy. Comanche could have headed down and protested but she tacked early hitting the mark.

You're doing important work; don't ever stop.
Spectacular race from the James Craig tall ship 🤩
Brilliant coverage as always from anything coming outta oz and has sails. Would love to do this iconic race..
Phantastic start 🤩Fair winds to all participants 🙌
Black Jack defo in port/stbd with Andoo at the mark. Don’t understand why the didn’t do a 720 🤷♂️
Such an exciting start!

Wild Oats didn't. It was Black Jack. Someone c0cked up blaming Mark Richards and Wild Oats.
It's also showing how skinny it is, which is why it's not as good reaching.
Looked to me that Wild Oats and half the fleet prevented Comanche from tacking from starboard to port at the obstruction created by the race boundary and the spectator boats.
It's this type of battle, this approach, the close turns, it's all this that I miss in the current America's Cup
Amazing coverage and also great because it really showcased the class exhibited on Blackjack and Wild Oats while showing the lack of class, maturity, and needed skill of Winning Jr.

All the black sails, is there any Alfa Romeo's this year ?
If you're easily offended by the skipper yelling and swearing at you then I suggest you find another hobby.
Shame they don't do a much better job of covering the rest of the fleet
Great start everyone 👍
At 29:30 the decision to switch to half screen on the committee boat is a wrong'un. Best to get a full view of the start line.

Comanche, built in East Boothbay Maine by one of the oldest builders in the country
forgot to mention, great coverage CYCA & Channel 7, and re Wild oats turns ... that Law Connect has cameras recording from multiple positions.
Don’t see any foiling boats , assume they don’t meet the rules ( same as multihulls?)
Don't meet righting rules, but foiling boats that do have been built in Europe.
rough seas in the bass straight. not sure they would do any good

Law Connect with Ukrainian flag on the mainsail!!! Bravo!!!
You are right David.
Amazing
I wonder when we will see the first foilers for this race. Fully crewed IMOCAs or otherwise...
Too much fun...heart in my mouth a few times.
John Winning ... sounds like a skipper I would hire.
Yes, Winning is a whiner!
Fantastic
why is there no molty hull saill boats in the race
The rules are to make the race winnable by a small, family-owned boat. Very few families own ocean-going multi-hull boats. Allowing the maxi boats to compete is really surprising.
Long story. Not allowed.
You should piss those spectator boats out of the way of the yachts outside the heads. I've always thought this, be watching since I was a kid.
Blackjack made Law connect do a massive bear away as they threaded the needle between Law Connect and Wild Oats.
Colorful language at 49:35 mark
awesome...
How crap was the coverage at the last mark? Just as the reaching sails are about to hoisted, they cut away.. They didnt show a single hoist and set .
The camera operators are probably not sailors, and the TV production crew are not learned enough about sailing to know what to look for, perhaps.
Jimmy Spithill even learned the names of some of the smallest/amateur boats.
I find the "you won't win the race here, but you can lose it" comments interesting, since they've got 600+ miles to fix or screw things up until they reach Hobart. thy did indeed infringe. you cannot make contact with a race marker
Yes, the hit the mark, but only because they were avoiding Black Jack. Black Jack almost caused a collision, which is why Comanche was flying the protest flag.
Cancel the freaking spectator boats. It‘s too much mate.

First mark was also interesting.....
Didn’t Wild Oats infringed on Comanche’s right to tack away from the obstruction created by the spectator fleet?
To the lady in the chat replay. The broadcast is ALL about the maxis, the other 100 boats don't matter.
Can someone please unpack all that start drama? The commentators seemed to have no idea.
one of the boats got squeezed at the mark turning and it came into contact with the race marker. you cannot do that for any reason. the offending boat thinks it was squeezed into the spot maybe but they weren't, they were on starboard and cound have charged through
Cool
Well done "COMANCHE"! But you won't have it so good next year! A new maxi called "CAVALRY", will be out hunting for line honours.
You could not pay me enough to sail with Mark Richards....
Black Jack with no concerns at that mark. Yikes.
Law Connect did some pro bono on the duck to let BJ get below Oats

what happened to the Silicon Valley hack JIm Clark
He sold Comanche years ago.
If you came here to avoid reality then you will be disappointed! If you came for REAL racing drama- Welcome, Welcome-Finally!
Wild oats breaking the rules again 😅
Where was the incident ?
I can't see that Wild Oats did anything wrong at that turning mark.
I missed it.
How did they break the rules?
The only 2 maxis not to do turns both have protests to answer on Commance...
Were and What rule?! I think they were in the clear, fair sailing..
Not missing the humour in calling protest on 'Law Connect'
Doesn’t sound like AMERICAS cup communication.
Channel 7 coverage Is so bad
I'm surprised anyone wants to work with Mark Richards..
The guy is so obnoxious is not funny
