Sortavala (Сортавала) is a town in Russia, which was originally part of Finland before World War II. It is located on the northern shore of Lake Ladoga.
In the first two, there were signs that pointed to places that are in Russia. One interesting thing about that: many of those names were originally a Finnish name that the Russians then transliterated into the Cyrillic alphabet. On your map, the names have been transliterated back to the Latin alphabet from the Cyrillic alphabet by an English-speaker. That's why your map has places called Lakhdenpokhya (Lahdenpohja) and Pitkyaranta (Pitkäranta). If there are signs in Finland that point to those places, they will read Lahdenpohja and Pitkäranta because that's how they really are spelled. These are mistakes that are a result of inaccuracies in both transliterations. Russian doesn't include a sound like the Finnish "ä", so it usually gets replaced by the Cyrillic letter "ya" which they consider the closest equivament. Then when English-speakers transliterate Cyrillic words into the Latin alphabet, for some reason they always replace the Cyrillic letter "h" with "kh". There are many of these letters which end up being wrong after the transliteration is done back and forth.by people who don't understand the meaning of the word. Then we end up with words like Lakhdenpokhya that is not understandable in any language. Go figure.
The cyrillic letter "h" is actually indeed "kh" and "ya" is actually "ja". Their h comes from the front of the throat with a raspy sound so "kh" is probably the closest you can get with the latin alphabet, so Lakhdenpokhja and Pitkjaranta make some sense. The transliteration "ya" is so that english speakers can pronounce the "j" correctly
Good map. I tried this challenge NMPZ and lost some points on two rounds. "Ruotsi" is Sweden in Finnish and those signs can be found in many locations around that area and that's why you didn't find it on the map :)
Managed to do entire game with no moving and 25k score, but that third round was tricky. Didn't at first think it could be near Helsinki, since the entire sign was in Finnish. Luckily I eventually checked it as well, cause I couldn't find that island elsewhere. @3:11 I'm placing my bets that that is an old sign (pre WWII). The highway 14 originally used to go from Viipuri to Juva via Imatra and Savonlinna, but due to having to cede Karelia to Soviet Union big part of the road was no longer in our territory. Since the stretch from Imatra to Parikkala was already shared with highway 6, they changed 14 to start from Parikkala and disbanded the highway status of the short bit of road from Imatra to the border. @18:30 Ruotsi = Sweden, so doubt you're gonna find that on the map :D
@@zatramander It would have been slightly funny if he had clicked on Ruotsinpyhtää! Then I checked and there is a house called "Ruotsi" in Enonkoski (do not confuse with Enontekiö _or_ Eno in Joensuu) but maps does not show the name at any zoom.

"Ruotsi" means 'Sweden' :)
we both messed up the same round! i got a little bit closer though, nice to see i'm 1 above you on the challenge leaderboard at #5 haha :)
