When copying files from iPhone to windows an error message will appear "A device attached to the system is not functioning" which stops copying your files from your iPhone to Windows 10. Steps to Fix iPhone Photo Transfer Error:
-Encountering the Error: When copying photos and videos from your iPhone to Windows 10, you might see an error message like "A device attached is not functioning" or similar.
-Solution on iPhone:
Go to Settings on your iPhone.
Scroll down and select Photos.
Find the option Transfer to Mac or PC.
Change the setting from Automatic to Keep Originals.
-Copying Photos and Videos Again:
Delete Previous Copies: Delete any previously copied files to start fresh.
Reattempt Transfer: Select all photos and videos on your iPhone and copy them to your PC.
Verify Transfer: Ensure all files are copied correctly by checking the item count on both devices.

The reason for the issue is that the iPhone has lost sufficient storage space to convert the media files to the most compatible media types JPEG and MOV to be able to open in PC or Mac without any additional CODECs. Although the above approach solves the issue of moving stuff to PC/Mac you will be stuck with incompatible files. So the best approach would be to make at least 10% or more free space available after offloading some of the apps and data or removing some large files to PC after switching to "Keep Original" and then switch back to "Automatic".

Been working on this about 1 week, about 10 hours total. Talked to Apple reps. Went to Best Buy. All a fail. I have pics of my deceased dog on my old phones. Trying to get it over. I just made that adjustment. Firstly, I hope it works. Second, I hope that change to the setting does not inadvertently delete any pictures. I will update here shortly
This works without the error message. HOWEVER, only audio is there and you need an add on for the files. I do not recommend. A lot of the important stuff would be lost. Changing it back and gonna keep teying

THANK YOU, thank you, thank you. I KNEW it was an iphone setting. I've been trying to figure this out for days. I tried to transfer from my windows pc, mac, new cables, and after each one still gave me the same error, I knew it was a setting on the phone. SHeesh!
Update.... this still won't work unless you have more room on your phone..... which ironically is why I'm trying to get photos off.....

Mine was with a cable that cost me £7.99. I watched a video and someone said it might be a cable problem. Went to my local pound shop bought a 1 metre cable for "one pound" and it worked perfect lol.. It's crazy that cheap shit still works these days lol :-)

If you get stuck with this - even after trying the posted solution, i found that disabling thumbnail caching in windows helps, as well as ensuring that when you setup windows file explorer on both source and destination, MAKE SURE that you setup explorer to ONLY show "File details"... dont list files as icons.

I tried your solution but what happened was I copied the Video but when it was done it only copied the Audio and no Video? I didn't get the error message so I was happy but when I changed the settings to Keep Original it copied but no Video just Audio ?

If they are HEIC files, try searching for a program in the Microsoft store that will convert them. Some are free and seem to do the trick.
