The reason why most of the characters looked the same with just different colors was to save on the cost of molding brand new toys. It was a cartoon in the 80s after all.
Of course! It's just funny to look at with a modern lense, especially knowing most the toys were patents bought externally which lead to characters like Soundwave having odd transformations.
@@mechakouhai if you gonna watch season 2, just keep in mind that Trailblazer and Moist are using same mold(they just drawn differently for some reason)

G1 is so weird and goofy that if you were to watch the transformers have weird names video. You’d barely be able to know the two weren’t cannon to each other
Big casts were a pretty common staple of toy-based cartoons in general during the 1980s, whether Transformers, Go-bots, G.I. Joe, He-Man, Thundercats, or My Little Pony. They wanted to have as much of the toy line appear as possible over the course of the series.
Back in the good old days it was perfectly normal to have 3 Soundwaves and a double Starscream feature, sometimes leaving kids wondering if they had just hallucinated
Idk if anyone's mentioned it yet, but I find it's great that the animation errors are canon, in "Ask Vector Prime 2015", they were referred to as "time and space anomalies" that later get self-correted, happening because of the many reality-bending exploits the Transformers do. My favourite example comes from the comic dub; "Optimus Prime Saves America" (short fan comic of 2 Optimus primes appearing) Funny part is, once the errors' corrected, everyone forgets it ever happened. If you haven't read the TFWiki, I'd suggest visiting it, they make jokes along with the information.

Yeah G1 is chalk full of animation errors, most famous being the episode Childs Play. They got the cells mixed up so a character appears in front of an object instead of behind it, it's pretty funny 😂. G1 was honestly kind of rushed in a few areas but that's how a lot of shows were done back then, especially cartoons.
The Japanese Transformers noticably split off from the American Transformers. Very few plot lines are resused as much with the plots being less episodic and having an over all arching plot. The earliest you can see this is with RID (JP name Car Robots) which takes places in the Japanese G1 continuity.

The reason why pretty much all of the characters early on in the show had toys…is because the toys came first, so they created the characters based on existing toy designs. Also ALL of the toys of the characters from the first two seasons were from either pre-existing Japanese transforming robot toys, or cancelled toys from these lines….mainly cancelled due to Transformers do so well, so basically just went all in on Transformers; also like at least 90% of the toys were originally from Takara Tomy.

Fun fact, there were fewer animation errors in the show as it aired. The DVD and Digital releases of the show were made by Rhino, who decided to reanimate a lot of the show them selves for some reason, and they did a terrible job. More than HALF the animation errors you have seen were introduced into the show, in the home video releases, but were not in the show as it aired. Yes that includes the Starscream you used in the thumbnail for this video.
I understand why some new viewers might not get some of the decisions the g1 show and movie made so imma explain it rq: So basically most if not every decision was based on the toys which came first and the reason why the show existed(to market the toys)and there were a lot. As for the killings in the 86 movie they killed so many off mainly because the toys of said characters were being discontinued for new ones
honestly transformers generation 1 is such insanity, but absolutely amazing at the same time Like, one episode its a plague which is outright said to have killed an entire cybertronian colony, then you can also find an episode where soundwave opens a nightclub and he and blaster end up beating the crap out of eachother due to it and also character introductions are complete chaos, because look at the combaticons with a two episode origin story, then you see the protector bots appearing out of nowhere-
Hasbro truly did just grab nearly all of the Takara Diaclone Car Robot and Microchange toylines to make their own toyline and put them in a television show it's very funny that this even worked out
Definitely gonna recommend to watch BW, it's one of the best serials/TV shows of Transformers. Don't mind the graphics, I think it's gives show some kind of vibe and it's own "magic".
As a 2000s kid my proper introduction to G1 was a damaged paperback of the first 6 issues of the Marvel comic that my mom got from the library she worked at, which included all 18 original Autobots introducing themselves and their distinct personality traits and abilities on a 2-page spread. It really felt like Optimus was leading a whole crew even though the likes of Trailbreaker, Bluestreak, and Windcharger were given nothing to do. Gears would have been the most forgettable due to his generic design and personality were it not for the fact that he teamed up with Spiderman in issue 3, back when they weren't sure if the comic would be integrated into the proper Marvel universe or not.
The issue is, like in any story, that introducing too many characters at once is a very bad idea. As it makes it very hard to remember every character that you want to have. But considering that this was originally aimed at little kids and their attention spans we're short, it made sense that they didn't have to follow the standard rule of building. The designs and toys sold themselves. Transformers animated (2007) solved this issue and allowed for a small amount of characters at first and produced a show with a similar story direction as the original teen titans show and focused on character development.
Beast Wars also had a small cast, although caused by limitations from CGI being new and expensive, but it worked out to being remembered fondly for the writing.
Transformers have a sh*t ton of characters from shows both western and Japanese, comics, movies, games, and it's not just them even G.I. Joe and My Little Pony have a lot of characters too. Hasbro really likes making these HUGE toy lines.
I've looked into the G1 animation errors for years. As far as I can tell, it comes down to the production being rushed, plain and simple. At the time, it was normal for animation to take 2 years to be produced before hitting TV screens, but each episode of G1 Transformers had a production time of about 4 months. It's amazing it turned out as well as it did. If you want to see even more animation errors, find the Rhino DVD set of the series. They used an earlier cut of the episodes that actually has MORE errors than what actually aired in the 80s. Jetfire in Skywarp colors, the ground the Decepticons land on being missing, that sort of thing. Seriously, in Heavy Metal War they land on the sky and kick up some dust from it.
I just saw your video on transformers one and let me tell boy oh boy I'm glad I watched that movie day one and it's probably one of my favorite movies of all time also great video I'm loveing this channel so far

I’ve actually been planning to make a video about Slag HAHA couldn’t believe my ears at first
@@mechakouhai Yeah, he's a totally underrated character in my opinion. Also, his name probably explains why his biggest character trait is his short temper haha
Ahhhh yes animation Errors of G1 its a Golden age of errors that somehow so funny it can be memebale and laughable heck there are even skits comics of it Daamn
Too bad IDW didn't explore this lool
Hope u get just as crazy as me on Japan's Beast Wars II.
I'm really excited!!
I think there are barely new characters there because the ones that you see most often are the fan favorites
Why are there 64 characters in G1 Season 1? Easy! Toy sales! It's like Pokémon. Gotta purchase them all!
Are you a Transformer?
No 👀 but I might be one day
Yeah, it's all to sell toys XD it was a crappy cheap cartoon that was made solely just to sell toys. Need room for more toys? "Kill the old ones. Kids obviously won't become attached to the characters".
It isn't until Beast Wars that they actually give a damn about how good the show is.
What are your favorite episodes of each season so far?
G1 was something, eh?
Prime bee ratchet ironhide and if I do that it will be a while also g1 is cool
Dragstrip is a fucking og
The king
Hey could have been worse… have you seen the nonsensical English dub of Energon? When it’s not contradictory to what’s happening on screen or previous episodes or the plot, it’s just actual nonsense.
We give a lot of crap to English translations of anime, dub vs sub debate, but this was to a whole new level of bad. And while I have my issues with modern translators slipping their own ideology to be used as a form of censorship, at the very least it’s comprehensive. Stupid, but comprehensive.
I've heard many things about Energon, none very good 😭
@@mechakouhai the Japanese version is better. And actually makes sense.
G1 ain’t weird this one doesn’t under stand it is the thing
Yeah
What is the game?
Mech Builder on Steam!!
