I admire well written female protagonists as much as I admire well written male protagonists. If I find them worthy, they have my admiration.

This is a lot of nonsense, people are complaining about how women aren't allowed to be beautiful in western games, women have been in videogames since very early in video-game's history. Stuff like beautifying mods are being banned for perceived sexism. This is simply very specific groups trying to push their own values and their own likeness onto established IPs, thinking people will eat it up, well we are tired of this and that's why there is a major pushback.

30:27 that’s not majority of the victims that’s the majority that report the crime or get talked about after the crime is reopened
Men are not included under the definition or protocols as a victim of these crimes

@@RelativelyNormalGameshow I forgot UA-cam doesn’t like it when you share links
Well the definition of …. I got from the FBI it doesn’t include envelopment only penetration meaning a female can’t do it to a man by getting on top etc etc
The other part comes from the
Duluth model that says the male is assumed to be the perpetrator and the woman is assumed to be the victim
Meaning the man is removed from the area/residence

As a biological man, I seek out strong and independent female protagonists in games, or create them to the degree that I'm allowed. Ideally I prefer these protagonists to NOT be overly sexualized, because personality > looks. Shocker. I also avoid the overly feminine traits, favouring a more tomboy look and vibe instead. I guess that this is because 'society' has 'taught' me that frills = feminine = weak. That being said, I've gone for more feminine clothing for my characters over the years, while maintaining their strong and independent vibe. I'm slowly washing away the engraved indoctrination, I guess!
Now why do I pick female characters? Because I'm just dead-ass bored with the exceptionally bland representation of men in pretty much every kind of media. It's always the same... two or so overused tropes, with very few options to make them interesting or to make them feel relatable, so I just never bother.
There are absolutely exceptions. Ezio Auditore from Assassin's Creed remains a great favourite male protagonist for me, and Portgas D. Ace is among my favourite anime characters! It's chiefly in the 'self-insert' protagonist games that I have difficulty appreciating the male options.

So very true. I see too that you have either this cold outcast unfriendly to anyone or you have this sarcastic stereotypicaly cool pretty boy, Nathan Drake or Dante from DMC come to mind. Obviously good writing should be priority for all characters despite their gender. Obviously the video was aimed to female characters, but no matter who your character is, authors should strife towards good writing of them.
Also, if you like tomboys, that's also perfectly fine! Obviously there is a trope that strong female characters are just buff girl boss with mohawk or something, but it doesn't have to be the case. You can have strong and independant woman who looks feminine like Bayo. There shouldnt really be a set standard that strong woman is either strong buff muscle mommy or a fashion model who just can run around in bikini cuz she is so good she doesnt need armor. Again, writing is a thing. Both for male and female characters. I would do video about those too but recently I have been playing so many games with customization that I just don't know what I would say. Maybe in the future.

Overall a pretty good video! 😊
Now I’ll proceed to leave a long comment to help with the algorithm.
You say here at 36:18 that these characters are modelled after real people which is true however a few examples you used here like Aloy and Mary Jane were made to look attractively worse then in their first games. Aloy makes sense given the context of the story, like you say she’s a tribal woman who’s been climbing mountains and fighting robots for a year between games. But Mary Jane in Spiderman 2 looks and acts like a completely different person in only 4 in-universe months with an uncanny resemblance to one of the game's writers despite using the same mocap actress.
Stella Blade on the other hand uses a real model and thankfully doesn’t go out of their way to make her unnecessarily ugly. I do agree with you that they went over the top with some costumes though. I like hot women too, don't get me wrong but hyper sexualization like that in any media takes away from the overall experience of it unless the context of the scene is meant to be sexual. I plan to finally play the game later this year so I’ll likely get back to you on that then.
But yeah it’s mostly like I said the other day in discord about how the woke DEI bullshit nowadays has changed people's perception of media involving anything other than non white men as “WOKE” even if it’s not woke. Sometimes it is like Spiderman 2 and other times it’s not like Final Fantasy 16 (Which BTW the dogs at Sony and Insomniac removed any WOKE aspects in the middle eastern release whereas Square Enix didn’t even release FF16 there because they refused to alter their games vision). Remains to be seen if Ghost of Yotei is actually woke or not but knowing it’s a Sony game I don’t hold much faith. I’ll know for sure by next year when I see more than only the lead character's gender.
PS. Loved the usage of the clip at 7:40 absolutely goated reference. 🤣

Thank you both for watching and some words to it ^^ sorry if I miss something because MY GOD, I would slap you until you learn what segments are xD its bit tricky to read.
I agree that it makes sense to make changes for Aloy. I think her new looks fit her very much! I don't know what happened with MJ, considering it should be the same model. I read something about just leap between graphics, since 2018 was on PS4 and S-M2 being only on PS5. I think the OP mentioned something about focusing on different textures and trying to go for more realistic face, which resulted in her looking different. But don't quote me on that, I doubt I'd be able to find it again.
When it comes to Stellar Blade, they actually didn't use real model for the face. They did scan Shin Jae-eun as her BODY model, but Eve's face is crafted by the devs. It isn't a real face. Pretty easy to double check it if in doubt haha. When it comes to her costumes, there for sure are games that managed sexy look without breaking the immersion. Even 2Bs gothic lolita dress fits better to the setting than whatever Eve is wearing. It really just comes to right place at right time. Im not saying all her sets are ugly, just that vast majority would probably fit in a game like Dead or Alive instead of postapo soulslike.
And yes, get back to me once you get to play it! Hopefully I do too until then.
It might be just me, but if they were so quick to remove anything "woke", how serious were they about it. As mentioned, me and Arak work on some stories and you bet my ass I am not changing anything about characters I wrote, be it their ethnicity or sexuality. It does smell like DEI they did solely for the purpose of being woke, not representing because they would want to, but because they thought they had to. Diversity and inclusivity is beautiful thing, it's common for people to travel and settle down anywhere, ffs it's 2024, its normal to meet same sex or biracial couples. Some people are just crybabies about it. This REAAAALLY does depend on how the characters are portrayed and written. Not everything inclusive it woke, but it definitely can be. There's extremely thin line.
For Ghost of Yotei, I read that the setting was era flourishing with different female warriors, also being one where women lost many rights. I hope they work well with whatever they decided to use. Ghost of Tsushima already had some LGBT representation which wasnt too much on the nose (one random questline + questline of Lady Masako and Mai), so I believe Sucker Punch can handle these topics well enough.
And yes, SAO Abridged is the best xD

I agree with everything, what I honestly hate is people forgetting that person looks based on what they do and what their genetic condition is. I want my assassin's to be agile and lean, while I want my tanks to be big and rough, it makes honest sense.
It's easy to claim "it's not what people want" and then get pissed that fantasy race has different beauty standards than humans do, sorry that I don't like all fantasy races look like "this dude is big muscular with a dad bod, big noses and teeth and women look like "they green" (yes I did talk about orcs)
Heck, even thru history beauty standards change, when you ask normal people what they want everyone is gonna say something else. Show 100 men 100 women and everyone is gonna choose something different, I could never choose based on looks but I genuinely find hot when women wear David's star necklace, I am not Jewish, it's just what gets the kick out of me.
People are different, I also don't go around internet complaining that "women don't wear Jewish signs on their necks" because if the character isn't Jewish, why would they have that?

Point of my video was saying that you should give authors freedom to make characters they want instead of making provocative characters to give people JOIs. Don´t know if you´re capable of that. Not everyone likes feminine women, the entire fandom of Arcane is a huge fuckin mass of people simping for Vi, the absolute unit of a muscle mommy. Dont make your own preferences superior to anyone elses, because they are not, don´t speak for others and let people enjoy things you don´t like :)

There was backlash against Eve from Stellar Blade from the liberal media like IGN and Kotaku. They even attacked the game director.
It goes both ways, but there is a clear agenda that has been proven with companies like Sweet Baby having their influence all over these games.
I do not care either way and it should be up to the dev, not outside forces. Creativity and quality are dying because of this. I will play as any character and its sad that everyone does not feel the same.
The woke and anti-woke have ruined the fun in gaming. My issue with Stellar Blade was the combat, which is what should have been criticized and not how much the character's ass jiggles or how much skin she shows.
The part you mentioned about standards of beauty has no place in video games and it is not the responsibility gaming companies and if people do not know that video games are not real then that is a failure on society and the parents.
Also you are losing me bringing up mass shooters. They have no connection to video games or your topic.
You have not provided a case for the video title and went on a baseless rant.

    • @RelativelyNormalGameshow
      @RelativelyNormalGameshow  2 місяці тому

I agree that this is up to author, and that creativity dies because of this. I still don't think my criticism of Eve is baseless. Again, i don't have issue with the character being sexy, but with her being often just so extremely out of place. Didn't know about criticism from the side of IGN or Kotaku, which yes is a major overlook at my part. I will do better with my research next time.
I did think real life crimes based on misogyny and sexism further show how objectified and unsafe we are overall, not only in gaming. It all connects in this wondeful bundle of men hating women ^^ so yes, they have connection to my topic.
I admit tho I struggles with the title, but I don't think it would change anything if I renamed it now.

No one has a problem with female leads in gaming, the problem is that they're shoved in for political reasons while more important things like writing and good story telling takes a back seat.

    • @RelativelyNormalGameshow
      @RelativelyNormalGameshow  2 місяці тому +1

apparently many people do have issues with them. And while you might be correct about some of them, it's not always the case either. It really can't be generalized. That's why I ended up more talking about creative freedom and just letting people create whatever they want. You will never be able to make everyone happy, sure, but at least the creator/author should be happy with their work.
