I’ve been doing hair for years and everyone complains that my hands are too soft and too gentle. It’s because I care about hair health over having your edges snatched. I stopped because most people celebrate and want hair damage. I don’t want no parts in it.

One time when I got my braids done my scalp was red, burning and swollen. For 2 days!!! I also had a bad headache. My mom told me it was because I was tenderheaded. Umm no. The hairstylist was rough and snatched my edges so tight. I couldn't move my forehead and my eyes were pulled back so tight I looked like a different ethnicity. From a young age Black women are taught that "beauty is pain" and "your just tenderheaded". Pain is normalized and are taught to just deal with it. We need to stop teaching our daughters these harmful things. Braids should not hurt.

It’s just nice to have others do it sometimes… I literally just shaved it off last year to start over but have been in “protective” styling the last 6mos smh. My edges were doing great until i got some lemonades then Senegalese twists! The lemonades only thinned out an area that had major damage that was finally growing back but these dam twists!!! That lil twist method they use to start them is super cute but these have pulled out more of my edges than any knotted box braids or micros EVER did!! I’m done. Going back to leave out parts. The occasional closure wig. And corn rows with the “adult baby hairs”. I know I’m going to cry when i take these out… I’ve already took over it that was hanging on by a thread! 🤦🏾‍♀️

I was not allowed to wear weave wigs or anything like that in my hair growing up. My grandma had a hair salon so I got my hair done pretty regularly for free. Her sister also had a salon. My mom's sister has a salon too so I got my hair done for free pretty regularly all my life. If I couldn't make it to the salon my grandmother talked my mom and all her sisters how to do hair so my mom could do my hair. But then when I grew up and got married and moved out on my own with my husband I found out that I did not know how to do my own hair. I didn't even realize I didn't know how to do my own hair because I never had to. So im not really sure what I'm going to do if I ever have a little girl because I still don't know how to really do my hair and it's almost past my bellybutton.
