You ought to check out Stanley Clarke's 1974 solo album (titled 'Stanley Clarke'), which features Tony Williams, Bill Connors (guitarist from Return To Forever) and Jan Hammer (keyboardist from Mahavishnu Orchestra). The whole album is worthy of a first reaction. Vulcan Princess, Topsy Lu and Power are fantastic tracks, where every member is 'on fire.'

Interesting reaction - as others have said, this whole album is essential for fans of fusion.
Tony practically invented jazz-rock grooves in the late 60s as a part of Miles' groups

You need to listen to the whole album. It’s one of the greatest fusion albums of all time. It’s on that Romantic Warrior/Inner Mounting Flame level. And it has some of Holdsworth’s best guitar work of the 70s.

It is a prelude to the rest of the album, from which it cannot really be seen separately. The sensational Red Alert is a song from this album that I keep returning to. Holdsworth touches me directly in this setting, while in other work he remains somewhat sterile and distant.

    Nice to hear some jazz.
The woman who sang ‘Girl from Ipanema’ recently died. If you are unfamiliar with that classic song, you may want to give it a listen. Her name was Astrud Gilberto. It’s a bossa nova tune.

I was actually quite surprised to see that you haven’t heard it yet. Like, it’s one of the most notable fusion albums. Some would argue it’s THE quintessential fusion album.

One of the greatest guitarists to walk the planet. Mr. Holdsworth

Listen to FRED, probably my favorite drum track of all time.

I hope you do the whole album. This was sort of a sleeper track for those unfamiliar with Holdsworth in that he didn't really start revealing what he could do until half way through the next track "Fred", when he unleashes some speed. I always skip this track. All of the other songs on the album are better. They are also better than the next album "Million Dollar Legs", with its vocals, and poppier direction. Also see Holdsworth cover some of the material from this album, reuniting with keyboardist Allan Pasqua, on his "Blues For Tony" DVD.

Tony Williams was a monster. I have a Lifetime Anthology and a later CD of his called Young at Heart that is awesome.

I agree with your comments but the musicianship, rhythm, and tonality are more interesting to me than a standard rock jam band. Thanks to Spotify, I know this track and saved it on a playlist.

Desert island album! You've got nowhere to go on this record, but up. It gets 'progressively' better. For my money Holdsworth and Jeff Beck are the pinnacle, and that's not Snake Oil. And if there's a fight about that statement, I'll go Blow by Blow with them.Peace & Love.

I don’t really like autowahed bass, otherwise it’s a good start.

Weak track on an awesome LP. Fred is up next and is a classic... Proto Cosmos and Wildlife are other classics!

I know this period of The New Tony Williams Lifetime, it's not bad at all but not really great either. It remains very cyclical all the way and not really exciting, even Holdsworth's playing here is very restrained (as if he wasn't really in his element). In the jazz-rock-fusion of the mid-70s Jeff Beck is the one I need and in the jazz-funk-fusion genre I much prefer George Duke or Herbie Hancock with his Headhunters, and even in the late 70s when the music of the latter two became both simpler and closer to disco at least it was swinging seriously !
