  • Podocarpus privacy barrier or hedge is slow growing and narrow. Easy to maintain because it is slow growing. This barrier is 2 years old. Planted 3 ft apart. Stays green all year. Zone 9B Fort Myers, Fl.

Can you post a video update of your Podocarpus and also a quick side view (perpendicular to trees) to see how well the coverage / privacy is after several years? Thanks for the video here.

I planted mine a couple months ago and they've already grown a half a foot. I wonder if you have a different variety that grows slow. I've seen some plants in the neighborhood and have grown two to three feet in a couple years.

Mine are Podocarpus macrophyllus. There is also a dwarf version. My 8 year old podocarpus grew to about 10 ft. Only started topping them at year 9. best wishes.

Did they only grow to ten feet because you started topping them? I keep reading mixed things about their max height 8-12ft where as others are saying it can grow to 25 feet

Did you plant 2 or 3 feet apart? Did you start with 3 gallon containers? I am going to plant a bunch along my fence and can't decide if to do 2 or 3 feet apart. I worry if 2 feet apart they may not grow full, needs the space to grow in to become a privacy hedge. But then I read some people put 2 feet apart and they grow. I want to make them into a privacy hedge.

Mine are 2 to 3 ft apart. Mine were about 3 to 4 ft tall when I put them in.

Is this the dwarf Italian cypress the one that's grows up to 12 feet only..I live in the city in a corner lot and looking for something to block my 2 story neighbiors house..don't want anything with aggressive roots. I also need some shurbs or small pines for the fence that faces the street. My yard sits high so people can see inside my yard..I like the hedges but I don't think we will be maintaining it to cut it like a wall all the time.

Hi, This is not a type of Italian cypress. I am in zone 9b/10. Podocarpus takes no pruning. I have had it on two sides of the garage for 7 years and have never pruned it. It grows very slowly and stays narrow. Best wishes. For more info link: www.south-florida-plant-guide.com/podocarpus.html

Do you find these to be very messy? Looking to replace bamboo that makes a huge mess of tiny leaves! Ty!

Just curious how are your podocarpus doing now? I was told not to grow them any closer than 4 feet apart. Mine are 3.6 feet apart. I wish I could have planted them closer though. How close are yours?

    • @sandystp9624

Mine are about 6 yrs old. They are a foot wide on both sides of the trunk. So about 2 ft wide total across. I have never trimmed them. Last year I saw some at a resort lining a a wide walk way that were trimmed to about 8 inch wide across, total width... that would require trimming to keep them that narrow.

@@sandystp9624 oh so you’re was planted 2 feet apart? I think that’s why they are growing very slowly because the roots are competing for nutrients. Yours look really nice though.
